Hi,

Just wondering why I can't select 1920x1200 60Hz in DX10 mode and if there is a workaround? (I have a GTX 260, i.e. DX10 card, and Win 7 64.)

The option is there in DX9 mode, but it's only 59Hz in DX10 mode, which looks a lot jerkier than 60Hz (since presumably this is designed to lock your framerate to 30 fps).

Looks like I'll have to stick to DX9 for the time being.

Your desktop is probably running at 59Hz, because of the way DX10/11 fullscreen overlays function, the game will run at the same frequency as your desktop.

It has to do with monitors actually running at 59.94Hz, and MS changing the way Windows 7 reports this frequency (rounding down, instead of up). If you check the OSD on your monitor, it probably will still show as 60Hz.

I'm confused. Why do most screen resolutions presented in Civ have both 59Hz and 60Hz options (except 1920x1200 in DX10)?

I got the same issue, native resoltuion for my monitor is 1680x1050, the nvidia drivers are set to 60hz, monitor information (using the buttons on the monitor) is reporting 60hz on the desktop.

Yet with dx10/11 mode i can only select 59hz in game for the 1680x1050 resolution, making alt tabbing super slow and kinda slowing down my pc as well.
If i play in windowed mode its no problem at all, but then you cant scroll using your mouse at the edges top/bottom/left/right.

In dx9 mode i can select 60hz np, making alt tabbing etc. also no problem.

Essentially, I'm saying that in most cases there's no difference between selected 59Hz and 60Hz in software, it will usually be running at 59.94Hz regardless of your setting.

Here's the MS kb article on the issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2006076

The game is programmed to only show resolutions/refresh rate combos below what Windows reports.

This is a good thing, some older games in Windows 7 only have 1920x1200@60Hz progammed into the game, so they don't show any refresh rate at 1920x1200 as selectable.

The monitor information should report 60Hz in Civ5 as well, when you select 59Hz ingame.

I think (I haven't actually tested at lower DX10/11 resolutions at 60Hz, feel free to give it a try) that alt+tabbing is different because of DX9 vs DX10, not because of 59Hz vs. 60Hz.

Thanks for the link and explanation Zelig.

I checked my advanced display properties and it was set to 59Hz. Seems to be a Windows 7 thing and shouldn't make any noticeable difference in-game. The fact that the DX10 / 59 Hz looked slower was probably just because DX10 is slower than DX9.

I'm sticking to DX9 for the time being because it's faster and anti-aliasing doesn't work in DX10 mode.
