It looks like a unit's First Strike ability is being added to the Combat Odds calculation when the unit attacks. Since First Strike is purely a defensive ability (or used to cancel out a defender's First Strike ability), it should not be factored into the Combat Odds calculation when on the offensive.

In the screenshot below, my Xbow is attacking with a strength of 6.0 vs. an Axe with a strength of 5.5. Yet, the Combat Odds are 73.2%, when they should be 52.1% (6.0/(6.0+5.5)). Since "1 First Strike" is highlighted in green, it's being factored into the Combat Odds calculation when it shouldn't be.

Please let me know if I've overlooked anything. Thanks!

First strike is purely defensive? I didn't know that.

From page 33 of the manual, under ARCHER:

"1 First Strike: When attacked, the archer has a chance to damage the attacker before the attacker can do any damage. This is negated if the other combatant has first strike as well."

I think it's mentioned elsewhere in the manual, as well, but I haven't bothered to look.

The manual isn't necessarily correct. I would guess that this was changed before the game was released.

Could someone from Firaxis please confirm how the First Strike ability is handled?

Everything (that is known) about combat is in this article. First strikes work offensively and defensively. A quote from the article:

First strike round(s) are special. The number of them is determined by looking at the number of first strike rounds of the attacker and the defender. Whichever number is greater gets the difference of values in first strike opportunities.

This means that if the attacker has 5 first strikes and the defender 3, then the attacker gets 2 first strikes and the defender none.
