1- "you have selected an unusable voice capture device" ? message I have to shut manually

you can change it from ini file which is probably located in "my documents/my games/beyond the sword " folder

and while you are at it: disable the first in that same file by setting

enablevoice from 1 to 0

ARE YOU LAZY? READ THIS: If you are getting an annoying "unusable voice capture device" near the beginning of Civ IV or Warlords when using Windows 7, simply plug a 3.5 mm audio jack (male) into the 3.5 mm microphone port (female) (usually on the back of your computer). Ocam's Razor folks. Never had this problem with XP. If you are running Vista - get a real OS! Does anyone know if Civ IV will even run on that monstrosity called Win 8?

First off: welcome to CFC

It happens on xp as well as vista and 7 - and plugging in a microphone or other jack isn't exactly a good advice unless you want to use a microphone - using the software settings available is preferable over any hardware crutch.
