did the habs get screwed in this trade?
How can you even ask the question? We gave a defensive minded d-man and a fifth rounder for next summer in exchange of a first rounder this summer and Craig Rivet Junior. So we get a pretty decent draft pick and a younger version of Rivet for
almost nothing. Rivet was a goner, a fifth pick is not the end of the world to give away.
Now the question is wether or not the rumors of Souray wanting to get closer to his daughter in California are true. If they are, then he has to be moved. If Rivet is worth a 1st pick in this crazy market, Souray could bring us some valuable young assets and the cap space to sign someone else. I would prefer to see him stay though. He's the main leader of this club and without him the powerplay is nonexistent. A progressively decreasing contract like the ones of Brian McCabe (making 7.15 now, 4.15 in the two final years of his contract) or Martin St-Louis (6 now, 4 in his last two years). Souray could get five for the next two seasons and then a little less over another two.
I think Markov is the one who's sure of staying in town. He applied for a canadian citizenship this year and loves the city. With him and Souray, Komisarek, Streit, Bouillon, Dandeneault, Gorges and Coté, we would have eight nhl-worthy defensemen next season. Sounds good.
Gorges is an ok d-man. He was the captain of his Memorial Cup winning team and is not meant to be an offensive d-man. Fans in San jose have nicknamed him
Curious George since he often seems lost in his own end. For what it's worth, playing on the same squad as Scott Hannan, Matt Carle, Christian Ehrhoff, Marc-Édouard Vlasic and Kyle McLaren makes it easy to look bad for anyone playing the role of the sixth man.
I'm very pleased by this trade. Gainey's plan for this season is the playoffs. This team will be a true contender for the 2008-2009 season coinciding with the hundered anniversary of the club. I'm a happy
patient fan.
