2011 Mafia Awards

An interesting choice- he's certainly a good mafia, but a scan through the list of games tells me he's had a grand total of 0 Bad Guy roles this year, unless a Chronomancer counts.

Good point, Mr. Statistics. I'll change the nomination. I'll also go ahead and count BL's 4th and 5th nominations now.

I agree, even if I just want to nominate a certain WOG :D

Why do you think I introduced the category? :P

In seriousness I want to see what else gets nominated. Show me the creative and the violent and the funny and the gut-wrenching!

I hereby nominate the two endgame WOGs in Backwards Logic's Impending Retribution for said category.

I also nominate myself for scummiest townie ever in said game, where I lied to every townie and nearly told the truth to a scummer or two.

And vote:Askthepizzaguy just in case.

Then I nominate myself for the "Hiding in Plain Sight" award for the same game, for managing to somehow survive way longer than I should have and get a bunch of random innocents to trust me for no real reason.

A bunch, but not me. :p I just decided I wouldn't trust anyone but the GM that game.

P.S. wasn't that the game where I got you on a slip of the tongue, I mean, of the keyboard, you made?

Yeah, that was it. I then immediately went on a ridiculous diatribe rambling against CCRunner and the Insurgents who didn't actually exist (although, admittedly, I thought they did), thus finally killing that guy on the next day.

Well, the nominating period is over. Should we extend it a day or two to get some more nominations for the categories that still have only 3 or 4 games/players/teams in them, or just start voting now?

We haven't had any nominations in awhile, so let's just start voting.

Just hold on to your seats for a few minutes, folks.

Voting for Team Awards begins now. It ends in approximately 53 hours.

Procedure:

- You are allowed to vote for as many nominated teams as you desire.

- You cannot vote for a mafia team you were a part of, but you can vote for an innocent team you were a part of.

- To vote, PM me a value between 1 and 10, with 1 being abysmal, 5 being average, and 10 being perfect.

- Whichever team receives the highest average wins the award. (However, the number of votes will be taken into account. For example, an 8.7 team with 30 votes would beat a 9.0 team with 3 votes. Although, if it's too close to call, I might just put up a tiebreaker vote.)

- A list of all awards, players, and games is located in the opening post.

Nominees

Best Mafia Performance:

  • Order of Kalabra (civplayah/Renata, Kennigit, Takhisis, askthepizzaguy) in Highway to Hell - nominated by Zack

Even though whichever terrible host set up this game (that would be yours truly :p) stacked the odds in their favor, to go through the whole ~30 player game with absolutely no casualties, while convincing the town of all sorts of ridiculous theories... well, that's more than worthy of the Best Mafia Team Performance.

  • Mutineers (Verarde, landlubber, DaveShack) in Pick Your Poison: Termite Sailors Go Mad - nominated by Jarrema

Maybe because I remember well how I was screwed by them?

  • Cult/Demons in Return of the Baron - nominated by Earthling

Far and away the best mafia team performance in the large games this year. Some small games like the recent Termite game have had impressive and humorous victories by scum but I didn't play in that one, just read it, and some those are rightly getting other nominations by the players who were in the game. Anyway, slogging it out for a rare win in a traditional NOTW setting with the town and other opponent is a credit to all of the mafia here. It also was an interesting one to follow even after dying early so that's always a plus - I particularly liked choxorn bribing people's votes with the ore, while maybe questionable mechanic, was very funny to see.

  • Mafia team in No Tomorrow - nominated by Backwards Logic

It's overlooked because they ended up losing, but the mafia team of Autolycus, CCRunner, and Earthling in NOTW XXXVIII: No Tomorrow performed admirably despite a cockamamie setup that was tilted against them. Had they gotten another day or two, they most definitely would have walked away with a victory. They were that close despite losing Earthling early.

  • The Vipers in Gangland Wars - nominated by askthepizzaguy

Because a CERTAIN MAFIA PLAYER completely outed his entire team. And I mean, he completely outed his entire team. Early. And then that team got predictably pwnt. And it was not their fault that they got pwnt, because they had the single worst example of being a mafioso on their team, who got them pwnt due to no fault of their own.

So that team should have lost, right? Yeah.

Except the leader of that team decided to recruit lil' ol' Askthepizzaguy, and then was promptly killed off. Leaving me all the [expletive] alone, with a pile of dead teammates, and a whole lot of people left alive, including the bulk of the pro-town network who had you know, investigators and nightkill protection.

So that team got destroyed because of reasons that should never be the reason a mafia team gets destroyed. And all because of one teammate who got rightfully awarded a LOSS even though the rest of the team carried it and eventually won the friggin game.

And me all by my lonesome become the mayor and recruited enough people to post this post, which I hope for my fallen teammates was worth sitting through an entire game having been pwnt by one of your own, just for the sheer joy of getting to see: The Viper Team Godfather declaring a domination victory. Which is ironic, considering who nearly caused our ignominious defeat.

Why do I nominate this team for best mafia team?

There are several factors.

1) They won the game. That's important though not really the best indicator of a good team. Sometimes peeps just get lucky.

2) The team managed to defeat an entrenched pro-town cabal with accepted-as-innocent players with pro-town powers. That's hard to do.

3) The team, or at least Khazaar, kept playing even though one member ruined the game for them.

4) It demonstrates the lesson of mafia: Don't rat out your friends. You live for the team, you die for the team. Even if you dislike your teammates, or they're inactive, or you don't think you can win. YOU DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK ON YOUR TEAM.

If I could nominate someone for worst player, I would here, because frankly, it's unforgivable.

This one goes out to all the Vipers whose dreams of having a fun game as mafia were crushed, and the man who recruited me in desperation, Mister White aka Khazaar. The beautiful team that should have been, destroyed by one of their own, but emerging triumphant.

There is no mafia team that endured more hardship than the Vipers, only to walk away with the top prize.

I realize I was a big part of that, but I'd have been a dead innocent player who hadn't done a whole lot, if I hadn't replaced someone and then gotten recruited. As such, if we are playing by Romanic's rules, I technically lost this game because my first role was a townie.

But man, losing never felt so good. And I lost to one of the greats. ;)

Best Town Performance:

  • The town in The Life and Times of Atto Ngoogol - nominated by choxorn

I was originally going to go with the Dinner Party, but General Olaf seems to have already nominated it (Kennigit un-nominated it to lower his votes to 3, so you can re-nominate it now, Olaf). Well-played game, town. The town struggled a bit at first, but quickly got the hang of it and started kicking elemental butt (Oh may the Fire Elemental Rest In Peace). The Town worked well to solve the puzzles, defeat the mafia and Atto, and win the game, displaying a level of team-work, problem-solving, and activity rarely seen in Mafia. Sure, you can say the game was easier for the town than the mafia, but that doesn't change the fact that the Town played this one really well.

  • The innocents in NOTW XXXIX: Impending Retribution - nominated by Backwards Logic

Innocents in NOTW XXXIX: Impending Retribution, specifically for wiping out the Rogue team in spectacular fashion in roughly 48 real-time hours. I've never seen a whole mafia team wiped out with such speed - Zack through a clever ruse, Camikaze via lynch, Kennigit by explosion (though the saboteurs did this), and Sprig through a vig kill. Taking down CCRunner after the ship flipped around while simultaneously keeping it afloat after its main leadership had been decapitated was impressive as well.

  • The town in The Dinner Party - nominated by General Olaf

We put up a strong fight, even though the serial killer (Joecoolyo) won first.

  • The town in M-NOTW XI: The Murderer's Web - nominated by Verarde

I hate to brag, but Winston Hughes and I played a flawless game, even if the balance was a little off.

Feel free to add any comments, but please refrain from discussing your plans for voting. I'd like votes to remain confidential.

Decimals? You've already got a range from 1 to 10.

Anybody wanna trade votes?

I'm voting for blank because blank was absolutely exceptional in that blank game where they blanked the blanking blankers with their extremely large blank and then blanked all over the other guy's blankity blank.

Truly an astonishing sight to behold.

vote:askthepizzaguy, that joke was completely unfunny in the unfunny show Desperate Housewives and it is now.

Whoops! I voted you, even here. Pure reflex action.
