2011 MLB Thread

Here's an interesting comp -- Darryl Strawberry, who has a similar build and style of swing, I think.

Strawberry's first 25 games were rather unimpressive. 97 PA, 3 HR, .176/.227/.297, an OPS of .524. Strawberry would finish the season with 26 HR and an OPS of .848.

He should be able to learn to hit lefties, but it's probably not a bad idea to platoon him some. Give Francisco and Mayberry at bats versus lefties.

to ease him in is ok but if he has awful splits against LHP, it may be a problem moving forward. by awful, i mean really bad ABs and the crappy avg. yes, that is who many scouts have compared him to (fair or unfair). swing seems a little long imo but i've seen others with longer swings who have mashed. so that may not turn out to be a problem. having chollie there should surely help. strawberry won ROY in '83 iirc.

If he never learns to hit lefties, yeah, that'll be a problem, but for now, it's not much of one. It's not like the Phils have been getting awesome production from the corner OF positions, so if Dom Brown can't learn to hit lefties this year, it's not like we're going to be losing anything and we're 28-17.

Yeah, Strawberry, once he figured it out there in '83, started mashing. I guess we can always wonder how much the drug habit cost his career.

So Brandon Belt's hitting in the .370s down in Triple A. I think we may just end up seeing a Posey take 2 if he gets called up in the next few weeks.

The Phillies have decided to be more competitive this season by offering some of their fans two games for the price of one.

Valdez is going to be highlighted on SportsCenter today.

I went to bed after the 5th inning of the game last night, I was tired. Wonder if El Justo stayed the whole game.

It's a bit weird to be reading what happened. Baez 5 innings of 1 hit ball? Valdez shuts down the heart of the Reds lineup? I gotta go look at the boxscore.

Relating to the OP:
The Buffalo Bisons were the Triple A franchise for the Indians for many years, and always were contenders, and very entertaining to watch.
Last year the Mets took them in, and the team was the worst in all the minor leagues.
I never did like the Mets anyway, now it is worse.

stayed the whole game :) hurtin' right now with an early rise. in a word, insane. jay bruce demolishes phils pitching. baez, the dregs of the BP, pitched 5 innings  herndon and rollins making crazy plays in the field, chooch playing 3B and dving into the stands for a foul ball. and then valdez coming out to pitch. crazy. we went nuts. i said to my buddy that it's valdez who is the emergency pitcher. i said he's gonna hit 90 on the gun :) watch  he hit 88 :) threw one to the backstop, got the reigning MVP votto to fly out, plunked philly's favorite, scott rolen, and then proceeded to get out of the inning by inducing bruce to fly out. the place went nuts. just an all around wacky game and certainly the longest i've ever been to. got home at 3:30 am. need to get the paper and box score so i can attach it to the ticket stub

Cool  . El J, did you see him shake off a pitch? :scan: So funny.

he had a real quirky windup too  i told my buddy that he looks like pedro martinez  one for the ages. seems that valdez was the first position player to start a game in the field, come in to pitch, and earn the win since babe ruth in 1921

You are either crazy or dedicated, or perhaps both.
