Those were in the beginning of the year. Since then he has been pretty good, consistently. 3.41 ERA in the modern era is not that bad, anyway.

I was more referring to the July (June?) start in which he gave up like 9 runs in 2/3 innings of work. A game which I was at. God what a frustrating game. And then he had another similar start like 3 or 4 starts later. But other than that he's been ridiculously solid. I think his performances in the 2010 NLDS and CS in which he was lights out and cool as a cucumber at age 20 (for one series, in the stadium that he grew up going to and dreaming of pitching at) truly speaks to his ability.

I'm a big Bumgarner fan. Awesome baseball name, big tall goofy lefty with promising skills at a young age--I think he will have an excellent career. Particularly in the friendly confines of AT&T and the National League.

Manny Ramirez didn't run out a grounder in Tampa in 2002. They talk about it to this day in Boston. Maybe this is the beginning of the end for CPL in Philly?

Do others agree with me that we have most of the races run, with only the AL west and east to be decided? We know both Yankees and Red Sox are going to the playoffs, but we just don't know the order, but the NL is pretty much set right now.

Well Arizona would have to fold against teams that have not been playing well and I don't see that happening. We only have 8 more away games to play out of 21, so that is an advantageous schedule compared to San Fran's of 12 of 21 games to be played away and they still have to come to Arizona and if it is still close try and win there, so I seriously doubt it is possible. San Fran will somehow go on and offensive spurt, like they never have this season to win the majority of their games.

Well it will be a learning curve. I will be happy to just make the playoffs after such a poor season last season, but perhaps we can continue the NL West tradition.

Yeah, we really got burned bad by all the injuries. Rowand and Tejada will be gone next year though, a resigning of Beltran is definitely likely, and as long as Pablo stays in shape, we should be looking good for next year.

Edit: I still think the Giants have a good chance of making the playoffs. They just need an offensive breakout. However their chances in the playoffs once in are slim. The Brewers, Phils, and Braves are just too overpowering for a banged up team like SF.

Why such long toes?

It was just a remark on the rather one-sidedness of the discussion in this thread. I respect the Phillies, they're a good team. I've even seen a few of their games in a bar in Philadelphia in the 2009 season, which was a very interesting experience (though not as much fun as watching the first game of the 2005 NBA finals in San Antonio). I'm not saying you shouldn't support your team. I'm just saying that you Phillies fans seem to be very vocal in your support, whilst the other contenders' fans seem pretty quiet...

Also, why the snide remark about the Cardinals?
I know they're not going to make the playoffs. There's no need to rub it in. Losing your ace pitcher to Tommy John surgery tends to cripple your chances and if your best hitter has a mediocre (for his standards anyway) season then it's most likely end of story for post-season hopes...
