"300" - The Mod

Good to see you at it again!

One comment: I don't like the Run animations where the character takes a couple of steps and then stops. I think it looks better with the standard method of just having a completely cycling run without pauses, like the Firaxis units. But you may disagree.

I have to agree with our esteemed Moderator here. The one big hang up I've had with using Civ Army's units is purely do to the fact that the odd starting and stopping effect wreaks havoc with the AMB settings.

Other than that, for sheer volume of units and their potential uses, his unit collection is quite nice. :)

Note: Corinth is the one near Megara. The other dot is Sikyon (between Patrai and Corinth). Whereas Sikyon was neutral, Corinth was part of the alliance.

thanks for the map!!!

Wow!! Great to see you back in business, Dan!!

We now have a number of very eagerly awaited projects: it looks like 2007 could see the best Civ III mods ever - and this one will be one of the best of them. There's some great units there. Are you making a greek worker?

It is good to see u again Rob! :) I won't do a new worker to Greece, but if u have done one, tell me and I can use it. And let's make 2007 a good year to the Civ3 community with new projects!

Good to see u again too and I'm happy that u became a moderator :goodjob: . Congrats! I'll change the run animation, I just need delete three or four frames in the beggining and in the end of the animation.

@COAtlantis1745: thanks for enjoying the units :)

I wasn't here when you were last here, but even so - welcome back. :D We seem to have loads of good projects ready to be released in 2007, and this will be one of them.

Nice to see that you're good enough to accept criticism of your units and put the work in to making them even better. They do look really good BTW, I may have a good use for some of them if you don't mind. :mischief:

Quick question - are you basing this on the film and the graphic novel, or are you wanting to add other more historical elements too? Like the great naval battles of Artemisium and Salamis? I ask because I'm reading a book on the Battle of Salamis ATM and would be happy to provide a quick review of the important bits if you like. IMO the naval successes were just as important as the heroic stand at Thermopylae to keeping the Hellenes' homes from being raised. It's up to you, of course.

I'm basing on the graphic novel, but there is no problem to add stuff out of this. Example, some units of the mod were not present on the Frank Miller's work. I plan use just one seafaring unit for each civ in this 1st scenario version, but I can launch a expansion pack with more civis, other land units, more wonders after the 1st playable version was launched :)

Welcome back, Civarmy! Ya know, you were sorely missed in these halls...
You sure know how to stage a comeback, kiddo. :)

Good to have you back. :-)

About the movie: It's an American comic, right? That must be the WORST depiction of Xerxes/Persians in general that I've EVER seen. No beard?? Phew...

Your units look nice, though. :-)

yea and i always thought that spartans hated archery but i guess its a fiction mod so whatever its looks interesting

   Leonidas looks awesome, Odin! The loin cloth (I think) looks like some red shorts though.

I can't wait to play this one! Your work looks great. Some thoughts:

-I understand that you're inspired by a badly illustrated graphic novel, but that Xerxes... Don't get me wrong; the LH looks fantastic. It's just hard to see a historically based image that is so innaccurate. I've never seen any images or read any contemporary accounts of the Persians using facial piercings. In fact, self mutilation was (and is) taboo in that region. My advice is to keep it if you're aiming for the graphic novel & lose it if you're aiming for any historical accuracy. Again, the LH does look great for what it is inspired by.

-If I'm not mistaken, this period was still the Bronze Age. If so, Iron can be dropped as a Resource & as a unit prerequisite or maybe just rename it as Copper or Tin.

-The Persians shouldn't have War Elephants. The Greeks didn't encounter them until Alexander invaded India. If the Persians had War Elephants at Thermopylae, the battle would have been over in a few minutes.

-At 1st, I didn't like the idea of areas west of the Dardanelles being part of Persia, but now I agree with the proposed map. Especially, since most of the Persian empire won't fit & the Persians do need vast numerical superiority for this time period.

Again, nice work!

They HATED archery, but they did train/use archers as a neccesity.

Actually, I think by this stage, both sides did use iron.

@Odin: Looks cool :goodjob:

@Civarmy: If you want to give the Persians "numerical superiority", then here's an idea that I'm using in my scenario:
1. Give the Persians very weak (H.P. wise AND A/D wise) units. Mostly Archers and Cavalry
2. Make Hoplites cost population, BUT make them much stronger.
3. Don't make Persian units cost population. Also make them a lot cheaper.
4. Create improvements that spawn Bowmen+Cavalry every (couple of) turn(s).

That's roughly how they're going to work in my scenario.

Also, how are you going to represent the immortals?

1 - Agree with you there, it looks nothing like the historical images of Xerxes.
2 - No, it was the Iron age. The battle was 492 BCE IIRC, Iron Age started around 800 BCE.
3 - You're right about the Persians not having elephants, but I imagine that even if the Persians did have them then the Greeks would have worked out a way of dealing with them. If Alexander's Phalangites could hold against them then I'm sure that Spartans could.
4 - The Thracians and Macedonians were in league with the Persians at that time, so the map is pretty accurate.

Oh, and about the Spartan archers - surely they wouldn't actually be Spartans? They'd be some lower class of non-citizen or Helot, no?

EDIT - Damn, I keep X posting this morning.
