Today it has been 35 years since the US launched their ship bound to Alpha Centauri. Oops, I mean since first visit of a human being on the moon. This meant significant victory to US as they beat USSR in the space race.

And who had the first satellite?

And the first man in space?

The space race isn't over, you know.

Sure it is. ESA doesn't make any manned flights, ruskies don't have any money and Chinese fly vith vintage soviet hardware.

And the Shuttle is an expensive Roman candle?

EDIT: I appreciate the shuttle is but one step in an ongoing programme, however, claims of a victory in a race that never ends are .

Too bad no-one had told them that there was no prize. :p

yes the space race is over- as it was a set deal to begin with- the term 'space race" applie sonly to the period of scientific compition between the United States and the Soviet Union on which power could launch a manne dmission to the moon first. that is its onyl real definition, howeve rpeople might apply the term to other realms of space exploration.

Yeah I think what he means is the Race for the first man on the moon. Not everyones English is all that good, you gotta give a poster a break.

@sabo- the person my post wa spointed at was from the united kingdom :p

Face it. "The Space Race" was an unofficial competition between the USSR and USA, nobody bodyelse. It began in 1957 and ended in 1969 with the Apollo 11. There is no space race today. ;)

????? The Russians don't have any money you say? Then how come they are still launching Space Craft? Russias Space program is alive as ever.Technically we are still in the space race. America can not just claim it won it. Landing on the moon was a giant feat but it still does not claim victory in the space race. The Russians can say they won it too by the way people are saying how the U.S won it. They had the first sattilite. First manned space flight. First Space Station. And alot more feats. The space race is not over and it will continue for a long time.

The Cold War is over. There are American and Russian astronauts living in orbit together.

Let's just appreciate the fact that man reached out briefly and touched the face of god.

Now back to your regularly scheduled spam.

What are you talking about? The RSA has been falling apart since its creation! Their budget is $100 million! NASA is $15 billion! They now resort to selling seats to rich westerners to help pay for the cost!

If America is in a modern race to keep up with the Russians in space technology, GOD HELP US!

So we are going to compare achievements in space race by budget size are we?
Here's one about Man on the moon. Nobody questioned that the Soivets were the first in space, why is that we are still not sure about US on the moon?

As for the space race - it is not over. I don't know about you, but for me its Humanity vs. The Space. God I hope we win before we start eating each other :). And lets leave the Cold War out of it...

Who is not sure about the US on the moon?

There has been at least one TV documentary on this - the main point of contention being that the radiation present would have killed the astronauts.

Personally, I don't buy the conspiracy theory for 2 reasons;-

1) The "totally fatal radiation level" is that which occurs in a solar storm, 10,000 times the "normal" radiation level for space.

2) I can see no feasible way of faking the telemetry (ground-mission and mission-ground radio comms) without someone smelling a rat. It would have meant sending a perfect tape to the moon, with ground control reading their lines exactly right for each mission.

I never head anyone make a documentary about Gagarin not being in space. I saw a couple about US not being on the Moon. Sorry if I wasn't clear. :)

 The Cold War is over as well. Same as the space race. Did you just wake up from being frozen 30 years ago?

So we are going to compare achievements in space race by budget size are we?

No. I'm comparing it to budget size NOW. As in 2004 A.D. Not 1963 or where ever your mind is.

I never head anyone make a documentary about Gagarin not being in space.

There was one on TV just today. It also said Spudnik was made up. Maybe I can record it for you when they rerun it  :crazyeye:

Answer to this: At the end of the Cold War it was decided that by the New Russian Goverment to keep the Russian Space Program alive as long as it was possible, This is also partly the reson that most Soviet Military hardware has been negleted over the past 14 years
