Okay here is the story: HMS Seal, a British Porpoise class minelaying submarine, was on a mission to lay mines in the Kattegat. One German merchant vessel and 4 Swedish ships were lost due to this mines. However the boat was attacked by German planes and badly damaged. Thinking the boat would sink the crew left the sub. German Arado 96 pilots landed next to the damaged but still swimming vessel and waited until tugs could bring the boat into a German harbour. The boat was repaired and recommissioned as U B for the German Kriegsmarine. It was only of limited combat value, only for training and propaganda. However the torpedoes on the ship gave the Germans the possibility to solve their problems with the dud torpedoes. The dud rate decreased dramatically afterwards. U B was scuttled in May 1945 and later broken up. So the British helped the Germans out of their crise. The US however had throughout the war big problems with their eels.

wasnt called " the big death"?

No. To clarify, invasions, etc. were given names like "Operation X".
What I am looking for is along those lines.

oh ok u mean operation watchtower

That was the offical name. I am looking for an unofficial name.

A hint : It's related to resources.

Operation Shoestring!

Correct! Given the name because the forces allocated to the
operation were inadequate, particularly compared with what
the Japanese had in the area. But since they never concentrated
their forces for one big blow (which probably would have succeeded if launched immediately), the Americans were able
to hang on, and eventually win.

Your question, Elysdeon.

72 hours have passed, so the floor is open to anyone.

Since nobody responded to my question for 24 hours, here's the answer:

At the start of WW2 the Royal Navy had need of a fast seagoing patrol boat so they set about designing some. By the winter of 1939 and after a lot of extensive testing they adopted a hard chine, semi-planing type. The Fairmile yacht builders built the some examples with plywood bulkheads, decks and superstructure. The design was intended primarily as a motor torpedo boat (MTB) but due to shortages of motor gun boats (MGB) the first 94 were built as MGBs. After that they were a mix of MTB/MGB armed at first with two 21 inch (533mm) torpedo tubes then four 18 inch (457mm) torpedo tubes. The gun armament was usually one Hotchkiss 6-pdr, single and twin 20mm Oerlikons, and a single 40mm Bofors. The boats with two tubes were classed as MTB/MGB while the ones with four were classed as MTBs only. They were powered by four direct drive Rolls Royce or Packard Merlin engines each producing 1250 HP, giving a top speed of 30 knots (though latter fitted with 2/1 elliptical gearboxes were used giving another 2.5 knots). In all there were over 229 Fairmiles built by thirty firms, being the largest class of MTB/MGBs used by the RN and other Dominion navies.
