Sorry Hornblower, I've drawn a blank. I'd guess the target was a battleship but they hit a liner by mistake.

Bit vague, but if no one gets closer it's worth being early.

Thats easy it was a converted traweler which was used to house saliors.
Its name ....... hmmm its name escapes my memory

A converted ferry yes .... but the name?
and the original target was a bloody big warship that was very difficult to miss... but they did.

HMAS Kuttabul was the target that was hit, but I'll be damed if I can find what it was supposed to be

You got it. Kuttabul was being used as temporary accomodation and was tied up at the seawall of the navy base.
The midget submarines had snuck through the boom by following a corvette in an attempt to get at USS Chicago. Through sheer luck/misfortune the Japanese missed the Chicago from less than 500 meters and the straight running torpedos went on to hit the seawall a further 1000 meters away where Kuttabul was situated.
I am was reminded of this event by the recent unveiling of a new memorial that has a mockup of the captured submarine. The cool thing is that I can see it by looking out my office window.

It went round the world in 1928, and did passeger service between German and South America during the 1930s with a perfect safety record. Sometime after
the Hindenberg exploded, it was grounded, and was eventually scrapped
so that the aluminum in its frame could be used to build fixed wing aircraft.
