512mb of RAM isn't enough.....

Folks, I know it has memory leak errors. I know it's not running effeciently.

But for the time being, if the game is going to consume 700+ mb while running (memory leak or not) then I would prefer to have that 1gig of physical memory allotted for stability purposes anyways. There was a time when I "fubar'd" something on the keyboard or with the mouse, which minimized civ4 and boom.....I was waiting nearly 10 minutes for the game to recover as it thrashed my drive caching the pagefile. After bumping to 1gig yesterday....no more bullsh*t like that.

And people...c'mon...it's memory. You can get 512 for a nickel and your computer can run that much better because of it. Should we have to do that for a game like this? Absolutely not. But i'm glad I have a gig instead of 512mb now. :)

Brian,
Glad to see it is helping some. Some people it is CPU. Some people it is GPU/Vid Card. Some people it feels like everything is wrong. :(

Amazing! I added 3GB of RAM and Civ4 Sucked up 2.4GB of RAM I guess its just a huge resource hog! I took out the extra 2GB's and just stuck with 1 and civ4 uses 724MB.

I am curious if your Swap File was running less when you had the extra ram installed. Did you notice if your Hard Drive was quieter while having the extra ram?

Ya I think Barnacle and other tight pockets need to chilllax. The game cost the same as the extra 512 I just bought. Once i get it in the mail I'll throw it in, have a gig and everything will run better. I'll been playin' civ 4 like a mofo while others will still be waiting for the miracle patch thats supposed to come out.

chances are the patch won't fix this problem, if it exists, anyways.

Anyone know how I should set my page file size at 1 gig? I'm hearing all this about turning off turning it way up, turning it up and down while doing cartwheels and sucking martinis....

Does anyone have a clue or is this just a bunch of tech geek guessing?

Hm, some people will find it difficult to pay for the extra RAM, especially when they thought they wouldn't have to.
Also, consider that this might be a xmas present!
I have a problem too where my mobo won't take more than the 512 it has at the moment (I think it would bottleneck), so it's not always that straightforward.
For what it's worth, with the pagefile thing, you can access that by going to (Win XP Home):

Control Panel
System
Advanced
then
Settings under the Performance heading
then
Advanced again
then clicking Change to access the pagefile size.

I've heard a lot of different opinions generally on how large it should be, let alone in relation to this game. The usual rule of thumb is 1.5 x your amount of RAM, and to set the minimum and maximum amounts as the same number, which apparently reduces the time the system needs to make this calculation. Don't flame me though if this is wrong! I freely profess to knowing very little about this. I intend to bump it to 2gb purely out of interest to see if it improves things.
