58 genders selection in Facebook

It seems Facebook is going to add some custom gender definitions...
I have to admit I understand only a handful of them...

Anybody can give a good definition for them?

Most of the above really boil down to 5 or 6 basic categories, perhaps? What's the difference between Cis Male, Cis Man, Cisgender Male and Cisgender Man, for example?

I think I'll be adventurous and mysterious, and describe myself as Other. Though I fancy the list must have the field covered.

Yes. That's been the case for a while. They like to distinguish between people who are happy being male, the cis male, from those who don't, and those who'd be happy with both.

I agree it's a bit much. A bit too... up itself. Or self-conscious, to be less contentious.

I'm not a 'cis male' as I refuse to acknowledge that ridiculous terminology. I am a male, period. I have a johnson between my legs. That makes me a male. Though I really shouldn't care as I don't use facebook anyway, but it's so damned stupid for them to not include simple "male" and "female" in the list.

Male and Female are still there. This list is the dropdown that comes up when you go to the custom option instead.

As for using "their" as a personal pronoun for an individual... just, no. It doesn't work well at all, in my opinion.

They invented 58 genders in order to hide the fact that some professions are in 90% dominated by women and some in 90% by men:

When you have 58 genders to choose from, maybe the number of women nurses will drop from 90% (current situation) to around 88%.

The remainig 2% or so being people describing themselves as one of the 56 genders other than men (49%) and women (49%).

I didn't explore extensively but I think it's both - a free form with a bunch of suggested options that drop down as you type.

Giving a free form option would be giving people great tool for trolling. You'd have people typing in all kinds of silly stuff like android, xenomoprh, half-dragon, etc which would make complete mockery of the people using the custom gender option.

The number of redundancies in that list is horrible to behold. It'd be more elegant to have a field for sex (male/female/intersex) and a field for gender (male/female/genderqueer). On the other hand, that wouldn't account for culturally specific identities such as two-spirit, so I dunno.
