A cat outside the building

Some very obviously newly-born cat, with golden-white fur, apparently decided to use the entrance of this building as its main location. Today, as i exited the building, it befriended me, mewing and pressing itself onto my shoes/lower part of the leg. So, given i went out to buy something to eat, i gave it a bit when i returned.
I found it curious that the creature felt the urgent need to seek something from myself, given that tendency could have been very misplaced, or even be a grave error if the person had been mean-spirited. I wouldn't approach a giant, trying to get them to show interest on myself, but the cat seemed to me to do just that.
Granted, it has been located in that position for a few days now, and originally it just went away, in fear, each time i approached. Maybe it regarded the building itself as forthcoming with source of food, given another person here seems to have fed it a few times.

Still, i think it is probable that the very young cat just means to stay as far away from the territory of the older cats, and simply identified that no other cat placed itself in the entrance of this building. But this won't last for long, particularly if people keep feeding this one; an antagonist will be attracted, and more than likely the other, larger cat, will use violence to take over the position. Which would be pointless, given the people won't just switch to feeding the older, and rougher cat; but such is the tragic ignorance in the actions of those creatures, who forever misunderstand the whims of the humans they seek to gain out of.

-do you think the cat's fate will be different than the one i imagined?

Are you seriously asking for advice?

BTW, a "newly-born cat" would not be capable of doing what this one is doing. Newborn kittens are blind and helpless for at least a week to two weeks, and then they toddle, while still being dependent on the mother to feed them. Is it an obvious kitten, a teenager (in cat terms, about a year old), or an older cat?

And I wish you could just email it to me. I'm looking for a cat to adopt.

:)
I can't adopt it (no money; let alone that i am not really the pet-keeping type).
It seems obvious that the cat has just been pushed away by its mother, so has to find food on its own. I think it didn't choose very wisely, though.

Do you have any way to post a picture? I can't tell from your description how old it is. If the mother weaned it, it's at least around 5-6 weeks old, which is pretty damned young to be alone in the world. :(

That's how young my Gussy was when he first came into our yard, back in 1993... in one of the coldest Octobers I can remember in my life. I'd leave milk out for him and in the morning it would be frozen, with little tongue tracks left as he'd tried to drink it. Thankfully we did manage to catch him and bring him inside before he froze to death. He was part of the family for 14 years.

Be careful. That cat may be plotting something. Cats are evil and seek world domination, dogs are the only obstacle in the way.

He wants to adopt you. Everyone who played DF knows that cats adopt humans, not vice versa. If you'd have a negative thought if something happened to him, he almost succeeded.

Big giants are safe and may give you food. Shorter giants and furry barking creatures are dangerous, stay away from them.

You should try to get it to a cat shelter, there's no harm in caring for it (warm place to sleep, a small litter box, water and some kitten food) for a couple of days until you can work out how to do that. They should be able to ensure it is safe and survives at least until it can be sterilised and big enough to fend for itself.

That is assuming the we creature doesn't just win you over into adopting it. Tiny grateful cats are good to have.

All the same, i can't be adopted. No money for that :)
That's a consideration I have to keep in mind with this adoption thing. I either want a cat that's already spayed or neutered, or one that's just a couple of months old so I can save up for the coming vet bill (there's going to be one anyway, since no cat comes in here to stay without a vet check). I can't possibly have a cat here who isn't fixed, since a female will drive everyone in this wing of the building insane, and a male will wreck everything by spraying.

But it's true that some cats choose their humans, not the other way around. I'm not normally a believer in supernatural stuff, but I've had this feeling I've never been able to shake about Gussy... my first cat, Cassandra, died the year before Gussy was born and turned up in our back yard. I have no idea how he got there; we never found his mother or any siblings. I asked around and nobody lost him. So I have to conclude that he was abandoned, and found his way into our yard... somehow. He could have gone to any other yard in the vicinity, but chose ours. It's almost like Cassandra was still hanging around, telling him, "Go there, my human will take care of you."

Vet cost is really beyond my means :/

Leave a public note with your telephone number somewhere. Surely there's someone around who's is interested in adopting that kitten if you can't do it yourself.

At the least, you need to care for it until you can find it a home or shelter. A little food, water, a litter box and a bit of your time. Then some effort to find it a home or take it to an animal shelter. There is no excuse for not doing so. Compassion.

Hm, right. I have an idea, BJ; why don't you fly here to take care of the cat. I mean compassion is the only thing that matters :)

Anyway, some others in the area already gave it a box and bring it food from time to time.

I wouldn't mind a Greek vacation, but India, more China and maybe east Africa are higher on my list. "only" was your addition and not included in my post. :p Do you smoke? A few less cigarettes would feed a kitten for week. Do you buy coffee? A few less cups would feed a kitten for a week.

It is nice to hear that someone is making an effort to care for it. :) And for the record, we have two shelter cats and a third that I found hanging out at a dumpster at work. That one was very, very young when we took it in.

Not enough cat pics. Here is my cat Nisse.

@Kyriakos, seriously, are there no cat shelters in your area? No pet adoption places?

Some of the Kijiji ads I see every day are for strays that turn up and can't stay due to allergies or incompatibility with current pets. That's how I got Chloe, all those years ago; she was a stray who turned up at a farm north of town, didn't get along with the family dog, so they offered her on Freecycle. Gussy was an only-cat at that time, as my oldest cat, Lightning, had died the previous year. It was a situation that just screamed, "Adopting this cat is the right thing to do" so I answered the ad.

Turns out I was the only person who answered. Chloe would have ended up in the SPCA if I hadn't taken her. As for Maddy, she has something else that some people would have seen as a problem: black fur. Honestly, some people are idiots when it comes to black cats. I've never met one who wasn't friendly, and under the black hair, their skin is the same color as mine.

Some of the possibilities I've seen over the past year weren't possible because they were too far out of town. Some people are willing to deliver here, but when I've taken a closer look at the photos and noticed dirty ears or runny eyes, I figure, nope, I do not need a huge vet bill right away. Maddy was born in a barn (the family I adopted her from got her from a farm), and came with a case of ear mites. The medication for that wasn't cheap, and it took both my dad and me to hold her down to administer the medication. I've got no one here to help with things like that, so I'd rather not get into a situation unless it becomes necessary later on.

Other cats' personalities are incompatible with other cats, and have to be only-cats. So that lets them out. And there are cats who like being outside... the only outside I have here is a cement balcony. There's no grass, there are no trees, and nothing to hunt. Cats are not allowed to wander the building.

Our calico (tri-color) just gave birth to five kittens. For a couple of days we could not figure out where she did it. Then my wife wanted to dry some laundry. The kittens were on a couple of towels that had been left in the drier. So, for a week or two, we hang dry the clothes.
