A Closer Look at AI Flavors

lol i live in michigan.. when would you be playing??

Your in the same time zone as me!:goodjob: I am on summer vacation. I would guess you are too. How about Saturdays, at 4:00. Or you can give me a time that is convenient for you.

Wu Zetian prefers a small empire, with large cities, and a moderate military. She doesn't trust anyone. She will usually be ahead of science. She is not very likely to win the game in general, but if she does, it will probably be a science victory.

You're right that she doesn't trust anyone.

But Wu acts in game much like every AI postpatch--constantly declaring wars if you're close. It's ridiculous. Even if you have tons of positive modifiers with her in diplo, she will attack, saying that it was a backstabbing. Really, it's not. It's just that all AI attack. They call it "backstabbing" to make it sound like it was scheduled. But in reality the attack plan only came into focus in the AI's limited mind once she/he/it had an army. Blergh.

Maybe I'm just pissed that postpatch, the AI flavors matter less, and their "declare war" flavor matters more.

Usually Wu trusts me and becomes a good friend and a trade partner, but all AIs will denounce and backstab at the later game.

well im good from around 9:00pm to 12:00pm but i can play around 4:00pm sometimes but it depends on what's going on and i warn you i haven't played multiplayer before lol

yeah my once longtime friend rome declared war on me like 4 times and claimed it was a backstab then after losing he wanted a declaration of friendship. i wanted to put him in a straight jacket and throw him into a mattressy room for his psychosis

The AI makes his decissions about war on numbers how strong is my opponent is he weak is he at war how much gold? Instead of looking at his flavors and then decide to declare war...

For example It should ask it self am i on good terms with him ? yes ok so i will not atack unless i have a low loyalty rading... Am i am on bad terms? Is he weak should i atack?

The AI makes his/her decisions to war based on strength and distance of the target civ. That's all. Flavors don't matter here, at least postpatch. I've seen everyone from Gandhi to Montezuma to Nebuchadnezzar declare war on me, over and over again, even after being beaten into bloody pulp.

So to conclude: I can hardly disagree with you more. Ideally Civ 5 AI *should* care about loyalty to a human player if relations have been good, but that's not the case in practice. Play games on King/Emperor and you'll see exactly what I mean. Build up a huge army and be nice to everyone. Then watch as the AI declare war on you anyway, over and over.

Exactly. And the thing that irks me is that warmongering civs like Rome aren't the only ones who declare war over and over again in Civ 5.

I'm back!
Now for Darius.
A well-rounded AI, Darius is friendly, but defensive. He will only declare war when provoked.
He likes a strong infrastructure: roads, improvements and the like.
He flavors happiness for loooong :c5goldenage:.
He often goes for a cultural victory, but may just go for a science victory.

I've never seen him go for a cultural victory, and he's always aggressive in my games. If only the flavors seemed stronger when I play! It's always "I declare war on you cuz my army is bigger than yours".

Hang on.....

<FlavorType>FLAVOR_NUKE</FlavorType>
<Flavor>4</Flavor>

They've programmed in how likely they are to use nuclear weapons?! Erm...

I think I'm begining to see where the AI is being sabotaged. Not having looked at the code myself, I hadn't seen the level of control being asserted in coding to specific leaders.

This really makes other civilisations more probability machines rather than decision engines.

How dissapointing. :(

Turns out Gandhi has a 12 on that flavor. :nuke::nuke::nuke:

TBH I've never looked into the mod or programming side. I'd assumed that they had followed the logical path of building a decision engine and letting play the game and then given individual civs an agression level based on whatever criteria.

But having looked at the list, the level of customisation in terms of civ scoring for flavor almost makes such a mechanic impossible.

The Civs aren't following logic, they're following a predetermined pattern.

No wonder diplomacy is such a mess, Civs are basically playing the same game over and over...

Note that each flavor is adjusted +/- 2 points in either direction before the start of the game.
For example, Wu Zetian has an 8 growth flavor, but this could change to a 6 or a 10.
Either way, she will prefer growth over expansion, but if it becomes a 6, she will focus on other things, like expansion, war, things that don't go as well with growth.
This applies to all flavors, so the game is still very random.

Does anyone think the amount of flavors have is overwhelming? Try going through that list making new leaders over and over again...it's exhausting. Some flavors are a bit unclear, and others are unnecessary (Naval recon, naval expansion, tile improvement, etc.). My question is, how come tile improvment is a flavor? Shouldn't all AI do that?

On-topic: I think the AI's need a bit more diversity in their behavior. 1-20 with a +-4 range would be better, in my improvement.
