i need some serious tips. ive played the game a few times and im eager to lern how to play this game with some kind basic of strategy. my games often result in caos and all the citys buildning the same thing, and i tend to listen to the adwises given, a littlebit to often.

and the moste resent problem i bumped in to was, how to expand in a proper way?

ive got the basics of what to build in my first city, but what in the second and third and so forth? should i apply the same formula there (like warrior, warrior, worker, grow to two pop, settler) and then when is it a good point to spcialize the city?

what i need is som basic tactic to evolve from?

and when is it a good time for my "great person"-city to build a wonder for great person production?

what do you think?

For me, I try to expand in rings (outwards from my capital), but it all depends on the situation, I expand quickly and nab a resource before the AI gets it. When I build a new city the first thing I do is either build a worker to develop the tiles around the city or build a monument to expand culturally and grab the nearby resources. My new cities do not follow the same build quene as my capital. After building my first settler in my capital, I start building up defences and letting it grow. At about size 4-5 I build a second settler. After building 2 cities, I make the capital build workers or defences or wonders and expand later. In the other citites I build granaries, settlers (if the capital isn't), and defences. After my cities grow to a decent size, I start specializing them.

I have trouble with expanding too. I build 3 cities but then I get sidetracked building archers I need to defend my next city and to stop barbs from pillaging all my stuff.

I am not a pro (only on prince level) but my strategy is this. Build scouts / warriors / fishing boats until at least size 2 in your capital. Build a worker. Chop a settler. Your settler should begin building defensive units. Back at your capital, build a defensive unit, worker, and whip a settler if possible.

Now with 3 cities your capital is free to build an early game wonder if you wish. The other two should alternate building units and settlers. If you hit size 4 or 5 in your 2nd or 3rd cities don't be afraid to whip out a settler or worker.

Keep in mind that how you expand will vary from game to game. If you have a rival nearby and a strategic resource and/or early UU handy, you may decide to expand by way of an early rush--in which case you may only need to found 2-3 cities, as you'll be capturing the rest. Your cities will build barracks and then units (you'll be capturing most of your Workers, too). On the other hand, if you can expand peacefully, either because you're isolated, or because you have plenty of room, or because you have peace-loving neighbours, then your build priorities will be quite different. As you play more games, you'll be better able to play it by ear.

Specialization usually has to wait until the city is large enough to run appropriate specialists and/or work the necessary tiles. You will also likely need certain techs to start on that route--for example, Writing for libraries in a research-oriented city.

As for the Great Person farm, specialists are just as useful, often even more so, for generating Great People compared to wonders. So the best time to get that city generating GP is when it has enough food and the necessary buildings to run specialists. I usually build a library there ASAP, run scientists, and then the first wonder I try to build there is the Great Library.
