A Serious Man

I saw it and I didn't laugh. I've heard that Jewish people laugh at it. Maybe it's an inside thing. :dunno: I Ok I did laugh at the Koreans (not because they were Korean... Well, sort of). But otherwise there's too much pointless stuff and... Well, the whole movie's pointless. There's a lot of Jewish people and they don't know if God exists or not, and if He does then what does He want with us. Big deal. The whole film's as empty as the suburbia that it depicts. Maybe that's the point, but then I don't live in the suburbs ("white-fence two cars etc -thing") and couldn't care less.

Well, I said it was interesting, not hilarious. The Coen brothers' sense of humour isn't like that.

Looks interesting, although i ussualy don't like the Coen brothers' films. From this trailer you cannot tell the actual story though.

How so? The story is summarized by the audio comment. (And it's kind of different than what Greizer85 describes as the movies' content...)

At any rate, I found the longer trailer pretty funny. (At this point I'm reminded of a movie trailer which consists of a very fast speed version of the entire movie, followed by "You just saw the latest film by Brian De Palma. Didn't cathc it? See the whole movie at..." or something similar. Anyway, you might say I was kind of a movie aficianado - I used to see quite a lot of movies.)

 Really?

Fargo is one of the best movies ever made :goodjob: And the big lebowski is brilliant and a classic

Well, perhaps I shouldn't have expected a movie named "Serious Man" to be laugh-out-loud funny. I'll admit that I did chuckle through many parts, but I expected more than chuckles. Anyway the movie's themes are very Jewish (they talk about Bar Mitzvahs yadda yadda), and so its cultural context is kinda lost on me.

@JEELEN: you mean this description? "A midwestern professor watches his life unravel when his wife prepares to leave him because his inept brother won't move out of the house" Imo, it's superfluous and totally subject to the larger theme which is God and His designs for us. And nothing final is said about that, so it's a pointless movie. That's fine if there's style enough; the cinematography was indeed the salvation of the movie for me. The main actors have interesting faces, too; not "Hollywood-beautiful".

Btw I haven't seen "Fargo" (criminal I know), liked "Big Lebowski" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" is one of my favourite movies. As for "No Country For Old Men", I'm not sure if I liked the book better; the ending is explained better in the book imo. Still a brilliant movie though. Chigurh is one of the ultimate villains.

Sorry to hear.

I don't now, it seems an adequate description if the perceived larger theme of God and His designs for us isn't worked out at all; it was my understanding that the Coen brothers are more interested in film per se. The result may be funny, but more often than not simply ironic. And God works in mysterious ways, yada yada.
