LR, sure their government trusts that we wont blow them away with our navy, just like our government trusted that we could let them use our port facilities in complete safety. The American people felt differently though, and Id wager if Dubai was a democratic country and the people had a say in it, they wouldnt want our aircraft carriers in their ports.

Which speaks poorly of democracy.

It has no bearing on security, however.

Then what are we so scared of?
Because one morning, it only took 19 men acting together to propel the worlds remaining superpower towards two wars, so far.
I wouldn't count on it. The same people we just slighted by backing out of a deal because we are scared of arabs likely have a great deal of control over the airline as well. Americans obviously aren't going to flock to Dubai as tourists, since we don't even trust them to handle boxes. Maybe developing closer ties with the EU is the better decision...
The EU has its own very real and long term issues with the Muslim world. Its hardly a rosy relationship.

So we are scared of our own reaction to terrorists rather than the terrorists themselves?

True, but the UAE has no qualms abouting doing business with western countries in the first place.

Why are there less reasons for this Cold War than for the first one?

Bad logic. USA just fought a Cold War and won. Wouldn't it be nice if we could have another one of those? It would be a lovely narrow-minded way of looking at the world, and besides, we just won one!

I dont think turning over our ports to foreign governments is a good way to make friends and influence people around the world.

Well, that's just silly, and I think it betrays a misunderstanding of what the deal was about anyway.

This thread more and more looks like Bozo vs. CFC OT. :)

Come on Bozo, if so many people (ranging from far right - rmsharpe - to far left - anarres ) are saying the same thing then they probably have a point.

As they say,

Vox populi, vox dei.

{I know I am contradicting myself; no need to point it out. :) }

They say people get the government they deserve, and with this, I'm beginning to think America really does deserve Bush.

Of all the stupid issues to 'unite' the American public. Good lord.

Maybe they got better than they deserve  Or the majority did at least.

Xenophobia at home thrives on xenophobia abroad.

:yup:

Here's a good illustration of why the president should not always do things to go along with public opinion. Of course, it doesn't matter anyway now, but still...

Sometimes I feel like the pre-war Churchill being shouted down and heckled when he took to the floor of the House to warn of the danger from Germany...
