A visual experiment: Would you like Civ3 to look like this -->

Is this something I can Download? I would not mind making all of my units look like that. Are the Guys that made Civ3 doing this? Will it be a Patch or something, or just something to DL on the Fourms?

Answers :
Not yet
No, the idea is originally from Kryten, and I make the tool, and we haven't made civIII.
We hope it could become on official patch, but before it should be DL on the forum, in two forms : a utility to make your own formation, and ready to play FLC.

but since only up to six units are involved at a maximum some formations would have to resemble rather then be highly accurate dipictions of their real life counter parts.

Not really in theory... You can iterate your job. First, create a 2x2 square formation. Then create a new 2x2 formation, using the formation you already made instead of single unit formation.
Now you have a 4x4 formation... And if you repeat again...

Of course, at the end the formation will be far to big to fit in the screen unless you use the size reduction feature (which still has to be done for munits, only the preview works).

That would really change the feeling of the game

yes it's possible. Just make it civ specific and give it the "army" flag, although I doubt it will fill the "standard bearers flag" correctly, it will still be built and used by the AI just the same.
I meant when converting a leader into an Army...

Routing Death FLCs
-------------------------

This is mainly for Steph, but rather than send them to him, I decided to post them here so that other people can contribute with their own observations and comments.

Having 6 figures all dying together looks very unrealistic.
So for that defeated Hoplite unit preview on page one of this thread, I had 3 soldiers falling over (2 from the front rank and 1 from the rear rank), and the other 3 'routing' off the frame/tile edge.

Here is an isolated view of that sequence, which I have slowed down slightly in order to make it clearer to see.....

The figure in this shot does not 'turn'....he just jumps straight into the run animation.
Now this is the same as most animations in the game: when a unit/figure changes direction, it does not 'turn' but jumps to face the new direction.
Also, when a unit/figure is faster than the enemy and it retreats or withdraws, again, it does not turn, but just jumps to face away before it moves to the adjacent tile.

Here however is the same sequence as above, but this time the figure does 'turn' before it runs away....

Yes, it looks a bit better....but it is a little more work to set up.

Quite frankly, I'd be happy with either, as I think that the difference is very minimal.
(BTW, the 1st squence uses 12 of the 15 death frames available, while the 2nd one uses all 15)

What does everyone else think?

Maybe all infantry foot units that have been created could benifit with this mod, I just hope that Unit creators can give the go ahead and give permision to the one who is making this mod ;).

I didn’t have much time to work on the tool this week end, except to completely clean the code (I think I’ve deleted almost 80%).

However, here are the new features:
- Centering option. The munits is not in the center of the grid in all orientation!
- Orientation option : the combo is used to select, for the S orientation of the munits, which is the orientation of the figure. This allows to build square formation.
- I have shortened the name of the files (the full path is no longer displayed) so I have more room for the option.
- I have splitted the option in several groups
- Lastly, I’ve added a progress bar when you generate the output storyboard

I don't think its necessary to have th units actually turn before they flee. It is hardly noticable.

I think the turn feature will be used more in fortify... To produce a nice square from a unit that was walking with all figure in the same direction :D

I have a Question, Are you gonna make Historic Formations for all Civs and Units in the game for Download.

Then, if you want to Custom Formations, you Download that tool to do that?

To Bob The Terrible,
Both the turning and the non-turn figures look good to me. I think it's just a matter of getting used to the new (and let's face it, more realistic) animation.

To Volker,
Thunderfall requested that all the old Civ3 'single-figure' units that are converted to 'multi-figure' be placed in one thread, bundled together, so that people can find and download them easily. So I and Steph will probably be doing this, as it allows us to also add the new 'multi-figure' sound files at the same time.
This is mainly for those people who like the new animations, but don't want to modify or change any of the existing rules or stats.
All the player created figures, and player created formations, would be made by anyone who fancied having a go, using Steph's marvellous new utility. :)

And speaking of Steph's latest version of the utility, here is a taste of how it can take just ONE figure, and turn it into this.....

(The Napoleonic figure was created by Smoking Mirror)

WoW! how long till you will be done with the utility? can't wait for it

As I said, end of next week end for the first release. I've already added the most "difficult" features.
Remember : I've started only 2 weeks ago, and I can work on it only from time to time the evening, and a bit more during week end!

I think I would include both types in a death animation, it helps to add variety and create the image of an unplanned rout.

Also a unit who steps or backs away before turning and running, might also look realistic?

Please continue with the excellent work, every day checking on this thread is like waiting for Christmas...:)
