A visual experiment: Would you like Civ3 to look like this -->

As I said, end of next week end for the first release. I've already added the most "difficult" features.
Remember : I've started only 2 weeks ago, and I can work on it only from time to time the evening, and a bit more during week end!

Your doing a great job Steph, don't rush it.
Make sure you get it right, it looks like its worth the wait.
:goodjob:

It may be strange, as the animation are usually not designed for units going backward. If the animation was walk, and not run, it would have been possible to play the animation in reverse mod. But seeing a unit running backward?

"Let's back away slowly and maybe they won't hurt us!"

Keep up the good work  I will surely download this once it's available.

As a veteran of re-enacted medieval combat (<--- see my title), it is much more realistic for a unit to take a step or two backwards before turning and running. The attacker will hesitate for a second, giving the routed unit a chance to start running. I've been in both postitions :mischief:

Rather than running or walking backwards, maybe a trip or a stagger backwards?
...but you're probably right, I don't for a moment assume ANY unit changes for CIV III are easy.. :)

BTW, my previous post was meant as informational, not as a slam or anything. I certainly don't demand that you spend a ton of extra time making it slightly more accurate!

Kryten, just so I understand you. You and the rest of the Moders, are going to be droping a Download here on the Forums, giving us Multiple Units to All Civ 3 Units, simple, easy, and ready, I just Download, install, and boom, I got huge Armies :D

Cuz I would rather not use the Tool at all, not that I dont think its a great idea, I just would rather have it all done and ready to use. :)

I think its a marvellous idea with 2 drawbacks
1. how are you going to stop people who don't have play the world downloading the multiple units for play the world.

and
2. how are you going to stop people who don't have play the world downloading the multiple units for play the world.

I know technically its only one drawback but i felt it was so important it was worth mentioning twice.

Yeah... so people will have to do these on their own, which won't be too hard, and you can add your own personal touch.

This is flippin' amazing!!!

Sign me up!!

Great work!!

Kryten, you should add that to the first post.

They are allowed. What is not allowed is posting them. So you can download the tool and make the munits yourself for PTW. Other munits will be posted directly here. And no, the tool is not available yet. You have waited several months before the announcment of PTW and the release, I'm sure you cant wait a few weeks before the first idea of the tool and its completion ;)

Been lurking here for a while but only just decided to join/post...
I expect the usual 'newbie' flames for stating my opinions, especially when they go against the 'norm'.

These multi units look nice and i think everybody agrees with that but if/when you have a game full of these multi units, not just a single animation, the game is probably going to slow down dramatically.

Considering this is little more that 'eye-candy' and adds absolutly nothing to the game (apart from a slower more cluttered map) is it all worth the effort ?

It looks nice ... but has the same effect as adding mag alloy wheels and racing stripes adn a chrome exhause to your car - NONE

Spooky- I expect the usual 'newbie' flames for stating my opinions, especially when they go against the 'norm'.
No need to worry, doesn’t really happen around here. . . Just post your questions in the right forum;). And my following reply is just that, only a reply.

Thats a little biased, as when you think about it, everything is done for that purpose, we have over 200 (300 now?) new units, fan-made that took their creators a considerable amount of time to make. By making these units, they didn’t add anything drastic to the game, they didn’t add an 'ignore terrain penalties' like PtW did, they are bringing 'nothing' new to the Civ community besides 'Eye-candy'. In fact, come to think of it, why does Civ iii have Animated leaderheads at all? Its certainly playable with a static one, or none at all, then why do they exist? Or, whats the point of the 'glossed over' backgrounds, that look like sandstone? I imagine it would be much easier for Firaxis to just make it look like a common windows file. The entire purpose of new units is mainly for eye-candy, and added depth for us history nuts. Now, if I was going to make a new unit, I would most likely choose to make it 'multi-figured', as I think it looks more real, and adds more of a egotistic feel to sending five or 10 units into enemy territory, to take over a empire. It adds more realism to the classic "Thats not a tank army! thats just a tank", when in reality, that tank is completely covering that mountain from view;). As for the game slowing down, Kryten already said the each Multi figured unit is only around 5kb bigger than its predecessor.

On the subject of walking backwards, then turning before running, I dont think its possible, as Kryten said:
Kryten- BTW, the 1st sequence uses 12 of the 15 death frames available, while the 2nd one uses all 15
(my emphasis)

Why should it slow the game? There are exactly the same number of frames as in a standard animation, so it will need the same resources.

The only pb would be to make different formation for every civilization. This would give more FLC, so it should slow the game. But it's the same as with any new unit.

A new multi figure unit is equivalent to a new single unit when it comes to performances.

Kryten remark is irrelevent for this matter, as it is perfectly possible to have more than 15 frames (up to 64 in flicster).
So it won't prevent a walking backward feature. What would prevent it is the animation itself : as it is not done for someone going backward but forward, it would probably need to redo the animation.
The concept of munit is to make them quite fast from existing single figure unit (shall we call it sunit? ;) ). So I personnaly think a moving backward animation can be done nicely only if the units creator make such animation for a single unit, which is then copied in a munit.

Oh nuts!

Ive been off the internet for a while, problems with switching to broadband meant that the whole computer had to be reinstalled and I lost nearly all my models, and animations (the only ones that I managed to save were a few that I had earlier put on a CD, including the still half finished units for the ATG scenario).
If I still had the model I could have done a standing fire, so the front rank could kneel and fire while the rear rank fires over their heads (though if you cut and paste thier upper bodies onto standing legs, you could do that, as the rear rank could then turn and flee).

All in all some very promising developments, with stephs utilities, I may be able to start making mods again (Ive had a break cos doing 8hours a day infront of a computer screen and then coming home to spend more time working with a computer seems a little massochistic).
