A visual experiment: Would you like Civ3 to look like this -->

I know, I'm just trying my tool in different configuration, unit size, etc, to check if it always works.

When I will have included all the formation I want to put, I will worry about actual unit production.

I must agree, the 2 elephants look better than the 3. (And not because of the pallette either :p )

I know, I not completly happy with my orientation yet. I need to tweak my angles.

And for the moment, I have only 2 formations available in my tool : 2 lines of 3, and 1 line of 3 :D

But the others will come!

Kryten,

Can we expect to see all your units in single figure variants as well as the multiple figure variant? I noticed you had your true Immortal there and would love to get my hands on just a single figure version of him. :)

I love this idea, but until there are multiple figure versions for all the units I am inclined to not use any of them. It is a beautiful idea though, and I look forward to its ultimate completion.

So, how will this project get going? If you just convert regular civ3/PTW units, you wont be able to post due to copyrights (I think). Does this mean everyone must do this themselves, or how do you plan on making this modpack a reality?

Good point.
However, think of it this way.....

.....to be able to use the original Civ3 units, and all the lovely player created ones, then you must have a copy of the game (the units themselves are no good without the Civ3 CD....and if you've got the CD, then you already have the single figure units).
So converting the original units shouldn't be a problem.
As for PTW.....that's different.

Maybe, if demand is great enough, Firaxis will relent, or maybe after six months to a year from now they will allow PTW Multi Figure units to be posted.

Still, there are a lot of original & player created units to convert first....more than enough to keep us going for the next few months! ;)

To Kal-el,
Yes, we have to have a single figure unit before we can multiply it into a multi figure one. :)

Once I'm finished with my small tinkering with Visual Studio, I'm not sure it will takes months...

So this is a call to all unit designer : make new units! Especially cavalry / infantry! We have plenty of nice tanks, but they won't be as nice in formation!

Maybe if you sent the PtW Multi Figure units directly to Firaxis they would allow them to be posted at Civ3.com. You could also password protect them using the PtW manual as a source for the password.

But my question was would you release the single figure unit. :) And when can I expect to see that Immortal available. ;)

This sucks! We cant get multi-formation for PTW!

And again....Yes. I have to have a fully working and totally animated single figure unit to start with, and I will post this as is (just in case someone else wishes to use it in some weird combination with other figures in order to make their own particular multi figure unit).

However, I should warn you that although multi figure units are easy to make (and will be even easier with Steph's new utility), the actual process of creating a single figure unit by the old fashioned method of cut-'n-paste has NOT changed, and takes weeks!.
All I can say is...."leave it with me". ;)

Please remember the title of this thread everybody....

A visual EXPERIMENT: would you like Civ3 to look like this? -->

I think that I can safely say that the answer to this question has been for the most part....."Yes".

But there are still questions to be answered, such as what do we do with Civ3 armies, and what about the units.32 file, and will they look ok in the city build queue?

We really must consider these points before we can move on to phase two....
....making it a reality.

The units32 would look crammed with if they looked like the actual unit, so maybe single pic would be better there.

That is sweet!

I too remember Master of Magic, but since it's been so long since
I played it, I forgot about that little feature.

If you can get the multi-figure units into a Mod, I would definately
apply it.

And, perhaps now that Firaxis has built the multi-fig unit like the
Conquistador, perhaps they would think about upgrading the units in a future patch/expansion.

Thanks!

Malgg

I think that there's no point to have army-units as unit-32 file. Army of pikemen on a map is just a pikeman in civilopedia or cityqueue... So don't worry about it - most important are flcs

Ok, I can be patient. :)

Well, IF you are all very nice, I may release my tool to everybody. So anyone can produce his own PTW army, like the japanese army I've shown in the preview.

Time needed to build the storyboard for the army with 6 different units, including processing the shadows : 36 secondes on my computer. And its the same if you want to desynchronise the units (but I've included only "looping delays", no "waiting delays" yet.

Of course, you still have to do some job with flicster, so you need about 5 minutes for the complete animation.

But remember this is just "stupid" work. All the interesting part, like what Kryten did with his death animation which is awesome is not integrated in the tool, and takes a lof of time.

WOW! I've been trying to do that in Civilization 2 but I see it works great in Civilization 3! I'd like to see a Civ3mod in which there are divisions and units of Infantry or Swordmen or tanks.

Please do a graphic for each unit. This is SO awsome!

Judging by the response this thread has generated, Firaxis/Infogrames probably won't mind terribly much if these units started circulating. Anything that generates more interest in the game is good for business. At the very least, I'm sure they'd allow us to download from the Civ3.com site. They certainly aren't going to ignore the enthusiasm these new unit configurations are creating.

Good points about the units.32 file GIDustin & Piernik.
I don't think that people will mind these only representing single figures.

But there is a problem....
.....although the selected unit looks fine on the main map 'control panel' (see the preview on the first age of this thread), the multi figure unit is 'chopped off' in the city build window......
(Personally, I could live with it. What does eveyone else think?)

We spend a lot more time looking at the units on the map rather than in the cityview. I'm sure we could live with it. I know I could.
