A visual experiment: Would you like Civ3 to look like this -->

If I had to add 1 thing to Civ 4 I'd actually add the ability for many units to cooperate in attack and defense. Each unit has a support bonus that is added if it is stacked with the attacking or defending unit. So longbowmen stacked with pikemen have an increased total defense. And when one stack attacks another stack, both WHOLE stacks fight. Making the game more tactical, as opposed to taking cities you now want to break apart large dangerous stacks, rout supporting units, etc. And it wouldn't make the game much more complicated, and since the AI already uses huge SODs, it gets an edge!

Elementgoo about 7 people have had the same idea and it can't work :(

Please don't insult people at Firaxis. It's not the matter of thinking, it's the matter of choice.

Yeah if youre going to insult Firaxis at least do it over something they richly deserve to be insulted for, like the weak-ass editor and removal of half the tools we had in civ 2 editor.

Whoa, this is cool! I don't like the "crouded" downside but it is just too irrisistable to pass up. They look so cool that it makes me want to learn to make units. For armies, why don't you just have the regular "six-person-team" minus one and in it's place put the flag dude? This would look fine to me. Take your time though, it is better to have good units and have to wait longer than having ugly, sloppy units. I like the idea of infantry where one or two are on the ground though. You should make a website dedicated to this single idea along with some others if needed.

Kryten, that went way over my head. I'm not a computer expert on these things, and certainly not on poking around with the Art folder...

It's not as complicated as you might think. Take a look inside a folder in Art\Units, specifically the .ini file. You'll see that's it's just a question of changing a couple of text entries.

I love this project!!!

I would love to see the WW2 units in PTW be converted too!
(hint, hint!) ;)

I think tanks and other armoured vehicles would be better kept singular or perhaps in twos,
What do you guys think?

Really love the "escorted" bomber preview and the jet squadron...

I just hope we see some of these previews becoming reality ;)

I know this has ben said dozens of times already but i have to contribute as well.......

This idea is AMAZING!!!!

Has anyone thought about what these multiple units look when combined in an army? What could happen to the bloke carrying the flag, with the units being bigger he might get in the way...dont want him to get a spear up the backside! Someone may have to rethink the flcs for the army...maybe move the guy a bit.

About the Jet fighters, they usually have 2 jets, not 3. One is the Commander (I forgot what he is called) and the other is the Wingman. we should make this into a creation group, or have some thread where we all co-operate with the units, so we know who is doing what.

Steph, you should release your new tool when it is done, for everyone to use. I plan on giving this a try myself.

As I said, I had only 2x3 and 1x3 formation available when I made the preview.

The "final" version of the tool should have a lot more formations

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we'd need to create flcs for armies of EVERY possible size and unit makeup, right? So we need one set for a spearman army, one for a spearman army with one slot empty, one for a half-spearman half-swordsman army, etc. on into infinity.

It's not entirely correct. We don't "need" several armies. The game supports only army and units. There's no way to control how the army will look like depending on its size or the actual units inside.

So we can do the change in 3 steps :
- Change the graphics of existing units, so they have several figures inside. There's absolutly no game change, it's purely graphical.
- Make some variation on the same "basic" unit, to introduce civ unique unit, but with the same graphic. We have only one Napoleonic unit available, but by changing the layout of the figures in the multifigures unit, we can make variation, like line of 4 for the British, 2 lines or 2 for the French, etc. This would give flavour units for everyciv at low cost.
- Introduce completly new unit, with mixed figure, like Spanish tercio mixing pikes and muskets. But I think this is not really a good idea, the combat mechanism is to limited to offer something really interesting.

We could also introduce a concept of size, by multiplying the units :
- 1 figure unit = company
- 2 figures = bataillion
- 3 figures = regiment,
etc.

The idea would be to allow the production very quicly and at low cost of small forces, used mainly for patroling the land, and powerfull but expensive armies.

However, I think this concept should be kept for scenario with a limited time frame, as multiplying all the units for all the time period will probably overlad the possibilites of the game engine.

since there will be multiple figures, each time a health point is taken a single figure should fall in the group

Once again, this is NOT possible. This has been suggested and answered to a lot of time in this thread...

You can already do this. Give your longbowmen a bombard rating with a range of 0. It works quite well

With my tool, you can customize the position of every unit in the formation. It allows to place different unit correctly (there are not all centered the same way), and also to make variation from the standard formation

Has any one figured out how the flag gets marked when it has units in the Army?

Could this be the key to making armies add a figure when a unit is added?

STEPH! You are a Genius! :goodjob:
I really like your and pap1723's idea of a company =1 figure, a battalion = 2 figures, a regiment = 3 figures, and so on.
But you are quite right.....this would be best in a scenario, NOT a normal game.
(....WW2....the Germans start with 4 figure units in a 'skirmish' (diamond) formation....by 1944 they are building 3 figure units....by 1945 only 2 figure units....:) )

I do disagree with you about mixing pikes & muskets however.
Consider this possible example....
Medieval Pikemen = 6 figures, stats of 1-3-1
Swiss Pikemen = 4 pikes and 2 crossbowmen, stats of 2-3-1 & a defensive bombardment of 3?
Spanish Tercio = 4 pikes and 2 musketmen, stats of 2-3-1 & a defensive bombardment of 4?
(I'm sure people will think up their own stats for the units)

BTW, I'm currently playing with your tool (!).
It's great! There are a few minor flaws, but nothing drastic. I'll E-mail you soon.

It really is very, very easy (hey......trust me....I'm an Englishman! ).
Think of an animated unit as a hand of cards (a poker hand if you like).
There is one card for each animation; run/attack/death/etc.
All you would have to do to 'customize' your unit is to change the Queen of Hearts for a Queen of Spades.

See if this helps......

Hey, this made front page!

I'd say this has generated a rather healthy response. I see names I've never come across in the creation forums, which is always good to see.

Anyway, everything looks great. I like the crowded look. If a regiment of musketmen is camping in your backyard, your going to notice them. As for the fighters...I say definately don't leave those single. Unlike the land units, they don't necessarily have to fit perfectly in a terrain square.

I suppose Destroyers are too big to fit two in a square. They may be something worth resizing to get them in, since I think multiple Destroyers would be appropriate.

Hi there,

Wow, this is exactly what I was always hoping for, i always thought of it as sad to be the worlds strongest power and to attack with ...... 4 tanks ! :D :D
Now you can have real armies of tanks rollin' on in enemy territory !!

But ermm, can I help or is there a file somewhere I can already download, i read the entire thread and ppl are talking about it as if there already is a mod,but I cant find it anywhere !?

I don't think it has been done yet. It has been talked about, praised and forgotton about, nothing has ever came from it.

I have never seen it displayed with this sort of detail and dedication, so i think if its going to happen it will ethier happen here, or never happen at all.

Somebody came up with the idea of dedicating a 'sticky' to this project so that the unit creators can work and help each other with this, and along with Kryten's Tudoral that he promised, i think thats a great idea.
