I played 11 turns; I stopped because and I've held up this game too long already as well as being uncertain how to proceed next.
Turn 0 (1315 AD)
I took a quick tour of our cities and I was impressed with the amount of whipping resentment just about all of them possess. These people have issues, but I'm sure you're aware of that already. But I didn't see any nearing their unhappiness cap (except for London at +1) so I figure I can keep the whipping going. I celebrated by whipping the Caravel in Hastings for 2 pop. I hope I haven't missed a reason not to explore the world in the discussion above.
I moved the fog-busting Archer south of Canterbury because border pops had caught up with him. He spotted a barb galley, like we couldn't see that coming.
IBT: The Catapult that was escorted by a Crossbowman and dropped off at Xian last turn bombarded our defenses to 4%.
Turn 1 (1320 AD) As predicted, we are notified we failed the Trireme quest -- I'm not going to beat myself up over that one.
London finished a catapult and started a Forge(5) for the happiness, mostly.
Nottingham finished a Trebuchet and started its own Forge(13)
Hastings finished the Caravel and started a Crossbowman(30). The Caravel headed on a southeast diagonal.
I moved a reinforcing Maceman into Xian. We should be okay there with only a Catapult/Crossbowman SOD threatening the city.
Our stack in Argos is healing. I quelled the urge to attack units outside the city with the few full-strength units we have there.
IBT: Brennus attacked Argos with a Celtic Warrior (You have to admire the guy's guts, attacking with less than 2% odds), may he rest in peace. He followed that up by attacking with a Longbowman who killed a War Elephant at 26% odds! huh?
The mini-stack of doom outside of Xian rethought the situation and retreated towards home.
Turn 2 (1325 AD) Pericles' larger but wounded SOD moved onto the Quarry south of Argos.
I think he was trying to get them to a road so they could make it to Sparta to heal. Bad move. They're all dead; we lost a Maceman at pretty good odds. Every unit in the city participated except for a Pikeman. I even sent in our supermedic spear at 99% odds, but you know I was holding my breath.
Turn 3 (1330 AD) Shanghai trained a Catapult, started a Crossbowman(13).
Nottingham had gone unhappy so I whipped the forge to calm things down.
Turn 4 (1335 AD) Our stack moved out of Argos towards Sparta.
Turn 5 (1340 AD) Our stack arrived atop the hill southeast of Sparta
I hit Enter and BtS crashed ugly with a memory allocation error. I upgraded my video card to 512Meg last month. Before then, I didn't get these errors -- I guess having more memory leaves room for more memory errors?

I rebooted and restarted from the previous turn's autosave then replayed and hit Enter again.
IBT: Pericles counterattacked Argos hard but we held, losing one defending catapult and leaving the following situation:
Our spy got caught, sitting alone on a hilltop north of Sparta, sheesh.
Turn 6 (1345 AD) We discovered Philosophy; Liberalism is due in 10.
The bombardment of Sparta began by promoting three catapults with CR1 and Accuracy. With 6 Trebuchets, they took the defenses down from 85% to 20%.
Our surviving Catapult in Argos threw rocks at the wounded stack outside the city to soften them up again. Our garrison killed a Crossbowman and Horse Archer but I left a badly wounded Horse Archer rather than expose a unit to be slaughtered IBT. That action created a great general in Beijing.
I sent him to be an instructor in Vermilion where I whipped the Morai Statues for 2 pop. They'll be cranking out reinforcements soon.
Turn 7 (1350 AD) The defenses at Sparta had swollen a bit. We don't have enough units to take the city in one turn, but I started the assault, hoping to capture it next turn if our units weren't too badly damaged.
Our Catapults took the defenses down down to 1%. I started the assault with three CRII Trebuchets, losing one. I then sent in a mix of units, holding back our medic, crossbowman and pikeman for force protection. That left 5 units in Sparta:
Surprisingly, Pericles did not retreat his wounded horse archer outside of Argos, so we killed him and moved a small stack towards Sparta, augmented with some fresh defensive replacement units.
IBT: Inexplicably, one of the wounded Longbowmen left Sparta. I presume he's heading south to garrison a new Greek city, Hallicanarsus.
Turn 8 (1355 AD) I took the opportunity to give our healthy Trebuchets some training and experience points, softening up the catapult defenders inside Sparta. The foot troops did the mopping up to allow our War Elephant to deliver the coup de gras, along with the Pyramids:
At this point, I considered stopping to give the team time to discuss whether or not to revolt to Representation. But it sure seemed like a no-brainer to me, so I pulled the trigger on my own. We had two turns of Anarchy while we selected representatives.
Here is a snapshot of our economy just prior to revolting:
I lost a Pikeman killing the wounded Longbowman heading south at 95% odds! I hate longbowmen on hills.
After killing the very wounded longbowman, I called upon Pericles to see what he'd give us for peace:
I wasn't impressed; the war continued.
Our Caravel found Frederick's homeland. He was willing to make this trade:
I declined but I wished that I hadn't revolted last turn, Vassalage might not have added a third turn of Anarchy.
IBT: Our southern Trireme survived an attack from a barb galley.
Turn 9 (1360 AD) Healing
Turn 10 (1365 AD) I've moved a few of the idle workers down to build some roads in the forests of our southern-most island. They're just about done now.
Our army continued to heal and fortify in Sparta and on the hill from which they had launched their assault.
We found the eastern edge of Joao's empire and met the Americans and Native Americans who were tempted by these trades:
I accepted both, and then made the deal that Frederick had offered the previous turn. We ended up swapping Paper for Feudalism, Aesthetics and Theology -- it felt like a lot of bang for the buck. And Joao had all of those already. Shaka doesn't have anything and wouldn't trade it with us if he did.
The map we got from Sitting Bull gave us the circumnavigation bonus next turn. Son of a gun!
For what it's worth, I noticed the trades had propelled us to the score lead:
Notice the Confusion block
War weariness hit in York so I whipped our first Longbowman there. I started a forge next turn for the happiness.
Turn 11 (1370 AD) Frederick offered this deal:
Despite the fact that we hosed him in the deal last year, I wasn't willing to take a hosing this turn so I declined. The theaters and Heroic Epic are tempting, though.
I agonized for a while deciding where to strike next. I was tempted to split our attack but decided against that. The obvious choices were to head north to Knossos or east to Athens. The capital is the obvious sweeter target but it would be a long journey through hostile territory and we'd be fighting culture for a long while. Knossos is the low-hanging fruit and would solidify a cultural front for us, so that's where we're headed now. If the team disagrees, I apologize for wasting the turn it will take to change direction.
I added some specialists to cities around the empire to take advantage of Representation but I wasn't impressed with the results. Here's our economy now:
The specialists gained us an additional 55 beakers/turn but it wasn't enough to shave a turn off Liberalism. We're still in good shape; Joao went after Divine Right and founded Islam, instead. I'm almost certain no one else has Education yet but someone should check that for me.
Here's the save.
