AA04: Victoria’s Aggressive Adventures

I played 11 turns; I stopped because and I've held up this game too long already as well as being uncertain how to proceed next.

Turn 0 (1315 AD)

I took a quick tour of our cities and I was impressed with the amount of whipping resentment just about all of them possess. These people have issues, but I'm sure you're aware of that already. But I didn't see any nearing their unhappiness cap (except for London at +1) so I figure I can keep the whipping going. I celebrated by whipping the Caravel in Hastings for 2 pop. I hope I haven't missed a reason not to explore the world in the discussion above.

I moved the fog-busting Archer south of Canterbury because border pops had caught up with him. He spotted a barb galley, like we couldn't see that coming.
aa4-01.jpg

IBT: The Catapult that was escorted by a Crossbowman and dropped off at Xian last turn bombarded our defenses to 4%.

Turn 1 (1320 AD) As predicted, we are notified we failed the Trireme quest -- I'm not going to beat myself up over that one.

London finished a catapult and started a Forge(5) for the happiness, mostly.
Nottingham finished a Trebuchet and started its own Forge(13)
Hastings finished the Caravel and started a Crossbowman(30). The Caravel headed on a southeast diagonal.

I moved a reinforcing Maceman into Xian. We should be okay there with only a Catapult/Crossbowman SOD threatening the city.

Our stack in Argos is healing. I quelled the urge to attack units outside the city with the few full-strength units we have there.

IBT: Brennus attacked Argos with a Celtic Warrior (You have to admire the guy's guts, attacking with less than 2% odds), may he rest in peace. He followed that up by attacking with a Longbowman who killed a War Elephant at 26% odds! huh?
The mini-stack of doom outside of Xian rethought the situation and retreated towards home.

Turn 2 (1325 AD) Pericles' larger but wounded SOD moved onto the Quarry south of Argos.
aa4-02.jpg

I think he was trying to get them to a road so they could make it to Sparta to heal. Bad move. They're all dead; we lost a Maceman at pretty good odds. Every unit in the city participated except for a Pikeman. I even sent in our supermedic spear at 99% odds, but you know I was holding my breath.

Turn 3 (1330 AD) Shanghai trained a Catapult, started a Crossbowman(13).
Nottingham had gone unhappy so I whipped the forge to calm things down.

Turn 4 (1335 AD) Our stack moved out of Argos towards Sparta.

Turn 5 (1340 AD) Our stack arrived atop the hill southeast of Sparta

I hit Enter and BtS crashed ugly with a memory allocation error. I upgraded my video card to 512Meg last month. Before then, I didn't get these errors -- I guess having more memory leaves room for more memory errors? ;) I rebooted and restarted from the previous turn's autosave then replayed and hit Enter again.

IBT: Pericles counterattacked Argos hard but we held, losing one defending catapult and leaving the following situation:
aa4-03a.jpg

Our spy got caught, sitting alone on a hilltop north of Sparta, sheesh.

Turn 6 (1345 AD) We discovered Philosophy; Liberalism is due in 10.
aa4-04.jpg

The bombardment of Sparta began by promoting three catapults with CR1 and Accuracy. With 6 Trebuchets, they took the defenses down from 85% to 20%.

Our surviving Catapult in Argos threw rocks at the wounded stack outside the city to soften them up again. Our garrison killed a Crossbowman and Horse Archer but I left a badly wounded Horse Archer rather than expose a unit to be slaughtered IBT. That action created a great general in Beijing.
aa4-05.jpg

I sent him to be an instructor in Vermilion where I whipped the Morai Statues for 2 pop. They'll be cranking out reinforcements soon.

Turn 7 (1350 AD) The defenses at Sparta had swollen a bit. We don't have enough units to take the city in one turn, but I started the assault, hoping to capture it next turn if our units weren't too badly damaged.

Our Catapults took the defenses down down to 1%. I started the assault with three CRII Trebuchets, losing one. I then sent in a mix of units, holding back our medic, crossbowman and pikeman for force protection. That left 5 units in Sparta:
aa4-06.jpg

Surprisingly, Pericles did not retreat his wounded horse archer outside of Argos, so we killed him and moved a small stack towards Sparta, augmented with some fresh defensive replacement units.

IBT: Inexplicably, one of the wounded Longbowmen left Sparta. I presume he's heading south to garrison a new Greek city, Hallicanarsus.

Turn 8 (1355 AD) I took the opportunity to give our healthy Trebuchets some training and experience points, softening up the catapult defenders inside Sparta. The foot troops did the mopping up to allow our War Elephant to deliver the coup de gras, along with the Pyramids:
aa4-07.jpg

At this point, I considered stopping to give the team time to discuss whether or not to revolt to Representation. But it sure seemed like a no-brainer to me, so I pulled the trigger on my own. We had two turns of Anarchy while we selected representatives.
Here is a snapshot of our economy just prior to revolting:
aa4-08.jpg

I lost a Pikeman killing the wounded Longbowman heading south at 95% odds! I hate longbowmen on hills.

After killing the very wounded longbowman, I called upon Pericles to see what he'd give us for peace:
aa4-09.jpg

I wasn't impressed; the war continued.

Our Caravel found Frederick's homeland. He was willing to make this trade:
aa4-10.jpg

I declined but I wished that I hadn't revolted last turn, Vassalage might not have added a third turn of Anarchy.

IBT: Our southern Trireme survived an attack from a barb galley.

Turn 9 (1360 AD) Healing

Turn 10 (1365 AD) I've moved a few of the idle workers down to build some roads in the forests of our southern-most island. They're just about done now.

Our army continued to heal and fortify in Sparta and on the hill from which they had launched their assault.

We found the eastern edge of Joao's empire and met the Americans and Native Americans who were tempted by these trades:
aa4-11.jpg
aa4-12.jpg

I accepted both, and then made the deal that Frederick had offered the previous turn. We ended up swapping Paper for Feudalism, Aesthetics and Theology -- it felt like a lot of bang for the buck. And Joao had all of those already. Shaka doesn't have anything and wouldn't trade it with us if he did.

The map we got from Sitting Bull gave us the circumnavigation bonus next turn. Son of a gun!

For what it's worth, I noticed the trades had propelled us to the score lead:
aa4-13.jpg

Notice the Confusion block

War weariness hit in York so I whipped our first Longbowman there. I started a forge next turn for the happiness.

Turn 11 (1370 AD) Frederick offered this deal:
aa4-14.jpg

Despite the fact that we hosed him in the deal last year, I wasn't willing to take a hosing this turn so I declined. The theaters and Heroic Epic are tempting, though.

I agonized for a while deciding where to strike next. I was tempted to split our attack but decided against that. The obvious choices were to head north to Knossos or east to Athens. The capital is the obvious sweeter target but it would be a long journey through hostile territory and we'd be fighting culture for a long while. Knossos is the low-hanging fruit and would solidify a cultural front for us, so that's where we're headed now. If the team disagrees, I apologize for wasting the turn it will take to change direction.
aa4-15.jpg

I added some specialists to cities around the empire to take advantage of Representation but I wasn't impressed with the results. Here's our economy now:
aa4-16.jpg

The specialists gained us an additional 55 beakers/turn but it wasn't enough to shave a turn off Liberalism. We're still in good shape; Joao went after Divine Right and founded Islam, instead. I'm almost certain no one else has Education yet but someone should check that for me.

Here's the save.

Excellent first turnset, Frankcor. There are of-course a few minor gripes, but let's leave that for later.

Now the question is what to do with Liberalism. We hold monopoly on Education, so Liberalism is safely in the bag. We have these options:

Astronomy:
Adv: Enable trading with the other continents, and is the most expensive available tech
Disadv: Joao already has it, so not a trading chip. Plus it obsoletes the Colossus, which is huge for Financial Civ with quite a bit of sea tiles.

Nationalism:
Adv: Next most expensive tech, opens up Mil. Trad
Disadv: Joao also has it

Printing Press:
Adv: Commerce, opens up Rifling
Disadv: Relatively cheap

Chemistry (Research Gunpowder first):
Adv: Necessary techs to learn anyway, may be able to trade with Joao II
Disadv: Need to divert to Gunpowder

War wise, with the Pericles stack gone, we are in the position to capture a few more cities from the Greeks. I'm inclined to continue the push to get at least the northern half of Greece -- that will pretty much leave Pericles as weak as Brennus -- we then extort techs for a temporary 10 turns peace, before going in for the final kill -- or do we want a pet?

Got It, and will play in 12 hrs. Let's have some discussion on Liberalism choice and war path.

War: it's OK to push Pericles for more. One minor annoyance is we can't extort tech anymore as he is less advanced than us. I'm not sure it's worth completely kill Pericles and/or Brennus with this amount of small isles. I vote for vassalizing them.
Lib tech: gaining a monopoly tech is not a big thing when others don't want to trade anyway. And I wouldn't trade away mil. techs either.
I think the best would hold up Lib @1 turn remaining and divert to Gunpowder/Chemistry. We need to trade Astron when we have Riffles.

Nice set Frankcor, and you certainly made up for the delay with that nice and detailed report

RE liberalism. We could take chemistry and probabely beeline privateers, for some fun and to harass the other conti. We have the circumnavigation bonus and might as well use it. Also some additional GGs are always welcome.
Or we could bulb Printing Press with a GS and take Replacable parts from liberalism, but this is more risky as we need a GS, guilds (if we don't have it yet) and banking.
I'd like to do that partly because I've never built any of those.

RE war. I'm for keeping it up. WW had to come and it will be there even if we DOW again later. Theatres surely are useful and us not having literature made me realize we neither built NE nor HE so this is a BIG priority I think.

Do we plan to attack joao anytime soon? I think we need to cut him sooner rather than later so he is our first overseas target in my eyes. Maybe rifles/grens/cannons?? I don't believe we can stir up serious trouble over there with bribes as they're all confucian buddies so we have to do it on our own.

I'll have a look at the save and post more specific comments.

I was waiting for your specific comments ... and then decided that none was going to come.

:whipped: for Frankcor ... don't flinch too much, it is going to be a light one ... in fact, I congratulate you for not leaving as much mess as you used to

They are routing there, while there are definitely work needed. For instance, the red circled tiles in Xian could use some roads and improvement. Also, if those workers have not been lazing, the blue circled tile could have a road built, and our stacks would be one tile closer to their target.

- Next, GP Farm: We want a Priest to get Hindu shrine built. At least keep a priest around. In fact, I am building a Jewish missionary in one of the city at the end of my turnset. Don't be surprised, it is meant to spread Judaism to BeiJing, so that it can build one more temple and enable one more priest.

Joao has Astronomy, so let's start some trade.

We need the gold to keep the research up. (Un)fortunately, Joao building the UoS helped contributed some gold. Of-course, gold could be gotten from capturing cities as well:

One turn before this, Pericles had some boats in Knossos. However, he moved them away just before we capture the city. The boats he had were now endangering BeiJing's seafood, forcing me to upgrade some caravels.

AA04-AD1390-caravels.jpg

The Greek caravels prevailed, unfortunately, but only one. It went down south towards London.

In the midst of the coastal siege, we got a merchant born. Those fishermen had no where to spend time with the sea being dangerous, so they must had stayed at home and had fun with their wives.

I considered settling him in BeiJing again, but decided that the ToA in Washington would make the Trade Mission worthwhile. Plus we have caravels ready anyway. It just reached American coast at the end of my turnset.

We are big ... YAY!

AA04-AD1405-largest.jpg

Let's get bigger, shall we?

"YES!!!" our troops agreed as they reached Corinth.

AA04-AD1420-Cornith.jpg

Just when I was thinking the AI is smart enough to pull the boats out of Knossos, it did the exact opposite here. :crazyeye:

AA04-AD1415-Cornith.jpg

Hmm ... 25% defense isn't useful here. But can't complain against an intact academy, courthouse and market.

Our troops headed towards the Sophia wonder next:

AA04-AD1430-Athens.jpg

The smaller troops south is unmoved, but I suggest they remains there and act as reinforcement once Athens is captured. Pericles is still unwilling to capitulate. Let's capture Athens, then extort Drama once Pericles learned it (in 3 turns).

I tried ferrying some units to the lone Greek city in south west, but last turn Pericles whipped a caravel there. Our frightened galley quickly hide 4 tiles away. So be careful there, next player.

We got Gunpowder in my last turn. So, Liberalism should be in the bag. Fortunately, Joao diverted away from Liberalism push and go for printing press > scientific method instead. He actually triggered a half-cost Golden Age with a GE:

Once we get Liberalism, let's consider some tech trades.

AA04-AD1430-trade-sit.jpg

Should be able to get Printing Press from Joao, and Astronomy from Washy. Too bad Guilds isn't for sale yet.

Here are my specific comments... bit late but I post them anyway :p

We don't have hammers to waste on USak, we'd better build more units. Also some tile micromanagement is beyond me: why are there unworkerd gold/wheat tiles? Also Canterbury needs to works watertiles to grow and so can't work specs. Another thing: Beijing is our GPFarm, it could easily hire 2 more specs. Also has no priest spec hired which we want as we lack a shrine.

I don't see us capturing cities if we split our stack in two unfortounately.

We should switch to literature asap and starte NE / HE. It's too cheap to trade for.

Well, got it, comments on the CURRENT situation later

Thanks for the criticisms and feedback, team. I admit to being overly cautious in not putting those workers to work that close to the borders. Until very late in my turnset, there were plenty of Greek horse archers within reach of tiles that needed to be worked.

Nice warring, GreyFox. you really put it to Piericles hard. With Gunpowder, does that open up a new tech to be gained from Liberalism?

RE: Literature, I didn't go for it as Joao could have easily out-race us if we divert too much. Plus we haven't choose our HE city. BeiJing could go full force on specialist once Nat Epic and a Jewish temple is built.

Frank: The plan was to get chemistry. And I know how it feels with the horse archers. In fact, I was carefully counting tiles and making sure that Pericles does not have engineering (thus his units has a maximum of 4 tiles movement) when I move workers/reinforcement.

I think we'll have to whip hard to get the NE built (BTW why do you always write beijing with a capital "j" fox??). RE HE, probabely that city with gold and some hills (I'm not good at names...) or somewhere in ex-greek.

My comments after glancing at the save:

Shaka is Joao's vassal and Joao seems to gift him every tech he gets. We have two uses for that: We get twice as many techs for those we trade them and it lifts "Monopoly-tech-thinking". I think we should put some beakers into PP and trade edu for it with Joao. We can also butter up Shaka by selling him edu. We don't have massive negatives with him and we only need him at cautious to trade so it should be easy.

I repeat myself when I say we should backfill literature ASAP. Joao is busy researching the "I-obsolete-everything-useful-tech" so literature is safe.

I don't see why beijing isn't running more specs - it is decent-sized and doesn't really need the hammers from working the mine.

IIRC, shaka redded out everything tradeable, so his is out. Our agent is only Joao.

Yes abt Literature, but I'm also repeating myself by saying it can be gotten after we get liberalism > chemistry.

As to BeiJing's (I'm chinese by race, so to me each syllabus in a Chinese name is a separate word, that's why I tend to capitalize each syllabus when english group chinese syllabus into one english word ... I kind of think of it similar to why 'D' is capitalized in McDonald's) specialists ... any GP we get will push the next GP even further. If we want a priest, it is better to let BeiJing run full-force specialist after it gets another temple, not before.

(what I write now is from memory and might not all be true...)

Shaka has everything redded out because "We don't like you enought". He doesn't trade at annoyed.

We have -2 from different religion, +1 from peace and probabely +1 from OB or similar. Don't you think getting Education for a little gold would add +4 and turn him up to pleased or at least cautious? After that we can trade with him too which is very important. And unless we change our religion and/or civics we won't butter him up. I think it's worth it. I don't consider the others regarding techtrading.

IIRC you said literature after lib to make sure we get it. I think we're pretty safe, Joao has 8 turns to go and we can backfill lit now. Maybe we can starting to prebuild cheap buildings to whip with overflow into NE later?

I'll wait with playing until you post again, fox.
