Since the patch that added the "abandon city" option came about (1.17 or 1.21? I don't remember), I've never really been able to take complete advantage of it. Mostly, because whenever I abandoned a city, I got nothing out of it. I've read of people abandoning cities and getting workers or settlers out of these cities, and I was wondering how.
This is mostly due to the fact that I'm a perfectionist player, and I can not stand taking over civs that were forced to pack their cities so close (like 3+ tiles shared per city) and get nothing from them except territory. I've counteracted this by making them build settlers and workers (thus getting all the population out of them) and then abandoning the city, but this is a lengthy process... time better used building temples and/or libraries for essential territory points.
In other games, I've simply let them live, rush built everything they needed, and contented myself with my core cities.
Of course, there's always the possibility that I'm insane, and you have no idea what I'm talking about.
