Since the patch that added the "abandon city" option came about (1.17 or 1.21? I don't remember), I've never really been able to take complete advantage of it. Mostly, because whenever I abandoned a city, I got nothing out of it. I've read of people abandoning cities and getting workers or settlers out of these cities, and I was wondering how.

This is mostly due to the fact that I'm a perfectionist player, and I can not stand taking over civs that were forced to pack their cities so close (like 3+ tiles shared per city) and get nothing from them except territory. I've counteracted this by making them build settlers and workers (thus getting all the population out of them) and then abandoning the city, but this is a lengthy process... time better used building temples and/or libraries for essential territory points.

In other games, I've simply let them live, rush built everything they needed, and contented myself with my core cities.

Of course, there's always the possibility that I'm insane, and you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Have the city be building a settler (or worker). The city needs to be at size 2 for the settler (1 for a worker) AND have -zero- growth. Micromanage so the city is NOT growing. Wait for the settler to be built (or rush-buy it), and if the city is not growing you will get the 'do you wish to abandon this city' message. Abandon it and you get the settler or worker.

Much appreciated! Though it's a little more work than I thougt it may have been (the way some posts were saying it, it sounded as easy as a simple right-click and "Abandon City"), it'll be nice to finally be able to this to its full effect.

Do you get other civs angry if you rightclick abandon? Is it considered just as bad as razing?

no thats one of the pluses of it
if you are in a war and dont want to keep the city you can raze it but other civs frown about that but you can capture it and abandon it next turn but if you do that you get no workers

I find myself not using the right-click method because I get nothing out of the city. Should be able to at least get one worker that way. After all, what happens to the population? They die. And I get nothing for my trouble.:(

what you get is no blemish on your record. It was wierd. I razed a city and lost about 6% and after i abbandoned a city with Newtons Univ in it (I wouldn't be able to hold onto that city, too well established) I actually gained 2%. Wierd from 93% to 95% by destroying a wonder.

I didn't know you could rush the unit to abandon the city... I will give that a try. I always thought you had to let the city build it naturally. Quick Q: Does that mean for settler, town size needs to be three if you rush it in depotism if cost for rushing is 1 pop?

What percentages are you talking about? If you're talking about reputation how did you find out?
