AbNESIV: The Rood and the Dragon (Development Thread)

Yeah its kinda mixed in.

Spoiler :
Scotland's population comprised two main groups:

1. the Picts, the original peoples (possibly a Brythonic Celtic group) who occupied most of Scotland north of the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth: the area known as "Pictavia"
2. the Britons formed a Roman-influenced Brythonic Celtic culture in the south, with the kingdom of Y Strad Glud (Strathclyde) from the Firth of Clyde southwards, Rheged in Cumbria, Selgovae in the central Borders area and the Votadini or Gododdin from the Firth of Forth down to the Tweed

Invasions brought three more groups, though the extent to which they replaced native populations is unknown

1. the Old Irish-speaking Scotti (Scots) or more specifically, the Dál Riatans, arrived from Ireland from the late 5th century onwards, taking possession of Argyll and the west coast in the Kingdom of Dál Riata.
2. the Anglo-Saxons expanding from Bernicia and the continent. Notably seizing Gododdin in the 7th Century. It was their language which eventually became the predominant tongue of lowland Scotland, a variant of English which was initially termed Inglis, whereas the name "Scottis" (pronounced the same way as Scots) referred to the Gaelic language spoken largely in the Highlands. However, during the late Middle Ages the name "Scots" was transferred to the Scottish form of English, while the Celtic language of the Highlands came to be known only as Gaelic.
3. In the aftermath of the 795 Viking raid on Iona, the Norse Jarls of Orkney took hold of the Western Isles, Caithness and Sutherland, while Norse settlers mixed with the inhabitants of Galloway to become the Gallgaels.

The British Saint Ninian conducted the first Christian mission in Scotland. From his base, the Candida Casa (present-day Whithorn) on the Solway Firth, he spread the faith in the south and east of Scotland and in the north of England. However, according to the writings of Saint Patrick and Saint Columba, the Picts appear to have renounced Christianity in the century between Ninian's death (432) and the arrival of Saint Columba in 563. The reason is not known. The Gaels re-introduced Christianity into Pictish Scotland, gradually pushing out worship of the older Celtic gods. The most famous evangelist of that period, Saint Columba, came to Scotland in 563 and settled on the island of Iona having obtained permission from the Pictish king at his court in Inverness to settle on Iona and to spread Christianity. Some consider his (possibly apocryphal) conversion of the Pictish king Bridei a key event in the Christianisation of Scotland.

Spoiler :
500 AD
A dramatic change occurred with the fall of Rome and the withdrawal of its legions from Britain. In what is now Scotland, the Picts from the north and the Irish Scotti (Scots) from the west took advantage of the departure to flood the undefended areas. The Scotti, who had first come as liberators, stayed as settlers. They may have been originally invited by the Britons in their wars with the Picts. Under Fergus MacErc and his two brothers, a fresh Scottish invasion from Ireland strengthened their hold on Dalriada. The situation thus paralleled that which was happening further south at roughly the same time where the Anglo-Saxon "helpers" turned into "invaders" further strengthening "the great divide." Southeastern Britain was deluged as Saxons, Jutes, Angles and Franks greedily poured into the poorly defended, rich agricultural lands.

In what is now Scotland, the Irish Scotti were the invaders. In their newly settled lands, to the north and west, a renewal of Celtic spirit came up against the Romanized Britons in the east, creating a divide that still exists today with the peoples of Scotland and Wales on one side and those of England on the other. And so, very early on the foundation for the modern call for separatism was laid.

Sweet, thankyou. Kan' will definitly have something to play with :D

Yeah since essentially Im part of Scotland (Bernicia joined with Deira and became Northumbria smack in the middle of England and Scotland)

Alright I have washed the car and will attempt to complete a Technology tree this afternoon.

Yeah, I kinda stalled in Scotland as I couldn't find much out about them historically.. have you any maps of how it should be?

I asked Plotinus and he said this:

The Scots didn't exist at this time. Most of Scotland was inhabited by the Picts. In southern Scotland there was Strathclyde, which was basically Romano-British. They controlled what is now Glasgow. Northumbria also extended into Scotland: they founded Edinburgh (Edwin's Burgh). Finally, the Irish were beginning to colonise the western fringes, in the form of the kingdom of Dalriada (this is represented in my scenario by a couple of Irish-controlled cities).

So anyone in Aberdeen or Orkney will be playing Picts. Unfortunately practically nothing is known of Pictish civilisation or what sort of subdivisions there were among them - or indeed precisely what happened to them. Culturally, the Irish settlers eventually took over Scotland, hence the name ("Scot" means "Irish"), but of course the Scots, as they became, were really an amalgamation of Irish, Romano-British, Saxon, and perhaps some Pict. Much like everyone else in Britain, really.

Alright I have washed the car and will attempt to complete a Technology tree this afternoon.

Thankyou Mr Slaughter. I do hope you will join the actual NES.. it would be nice to have more of the older generation players involved.

Welcome h-s!

EVERYONE

I want us to enjoy this era, I am in no rush for the viking to arrive and squash you all.. how long do you want turn lengths?

Seasonal? 1 year, 2 year? 5 years?

How about half years summer and winter or one year turns? They would be good in my opinion and if it goes too slow we can speed up a bit.

I like Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter or 1 year turns myself.

course that means construction will either take forever game time or be speeded up a bit unrealistically now that I think on it.

2 year turns. That's still 200 turns before the Vikings arrive.

Historically, not much happened in winter right?

Militarily no, socially, diplomatically, etc who knows.

Right, initially we will try 1 year long turns, ending in winter. Thus noones armys are marching about, all diplo can happen in "winter" and armys as a result of failed diplo can meet in the battle field in the summer.

Description: Anglo-Saxon cultural kingdom tied strongly to pagan Anglo-Saxon beliefs. The kings are normally the high priests of pagan houses as well, and internal turmoil is mostly created from intervening between different pagan houses. The tribes have a tradition of being very aggressive. Subjugation through war is normally done with forcing the subjugated populacy to convert to the ruling pagan house's faith. Military is based upon heavy swordsmen combined with a medium-weight spear-and-shield cavalry and light axemen to press the enemy. Archers are not widely used, but levy units are traditionally bringing either primitive spears or bows.
