Admin, map maker

Yes you are correct of course... They justified their poor start... but they were not happy with it. That is my point. I want starts that people will be happy with, not starts that they have to justify, by hoping everyone else is similarly screwed.

But people won't be any happier with high food starts. Activity has never been a problem at the start of a game. Boosting the start location won't help retain players mid game when they have under developed land compared to everyone else.

Isn't that kind of like saying... "What is the point of using a civ with Redcoats since you can't use them for a long time?" The point is, you can use them later. The point is you have a better start location overall. The point is you can choose how to micromanage your multiple food resouces... For example when you need :hammers: you work the cow, when you need :commerce: you work the fish. So really, you could be using all six very early, just different ones at different times.

Having many food resources doesn't make a start good. I would much rather a start with irrigated corn, grassland pig, ivory and copper (2 food resources) than a start with 3 sugar, 1 banana and 2 clams. (6 food resources).

AND anyway, aren't there ways to increase your happy cap early on?

Monarchy, Drama, Calendar come too late, compared to having fur, ivory, gold, gems, silver. Being able to work an extra couple of tiles before the techs that open up other happiness avenues can make a huge difference in the long run.

Also, with more food resources you have more to trade (with mapmaker designed monopolies), even if you cant work them.

This would be much, much better to do with calendar resources, which are less unbalancing for a team to have a monopoly of.

FWIW I can help out a map maker who wants to design the map. I'm not sure if I have the time to be a game admin though.

Don't really have the time to play, but I can dedicate an afternoon or two to the world builder. I'm probably finished with the demogame experience now, at least for CIV.

If were going to get the ball rolling we need a map maker, so who's it gonna be. So far I have me, Krill, and CH. I guess we could use all three, but I think we at least get started as the map could take a few weeks.

What about map size and the number of teams? Would those things affect how a map was made?

I would think, but it is pretty much settled at 4 teames.

Don't a couple of things need to be set before the map is made - like the difficulty level, game speed, and civ choices on the map? I was under the impression that you at least needed to know what civs you needed to preset before you can make the map, but maybe there's some other way of doing it.

I think you can make a pure map and then fill in the civs to play when the game is launched.

Obviously the map settings and number of teams must be pre-selected. Also the rule checkboxes may have to be set at map creation time, don't remember that.

Another related decision is the pitboss host. I think I could agree to doing it again if that's ok with the players, though we should line up a designated backup this time in case I get to go on vacation or get drafted for a business trip. If we have an admin who is willing to also host, that would also be a good solution.

I see no problems with having you host again, Dave. Of course, having a backup host (or two) around wouldn't be a bad thing either. Especially if one of them will also happen to be an admin or map maker.

The teams need to be formed to vote on the map parameters before it can be made.

I think that I agree with this. Once teams are roughly formed we can vote as teams about what the map options will be. Otherwise people who are not even playing will be deciding what the map will be right?

Although CommandoBob has a good point that we can't make an informed decision about map size unless we know how many teams are going to be playing... Its a chicken and egg issue TBH.:crazyeye: I'm not really sure how to resolve it.:(

We are now creating teams. We should start with setting the map paramters soon. If a teams joins after the parameters, they will only influence dicisions made from then on.

The map size could be set as last parameter before the map is made. Just before we begin.

And I totally agree: "Otherwise people who are not even playing will be deciding what the map will be right?"

Then if we need to start doing things maybe we could make the three already drafted teams official and start opening forums so theese team discussions can begin. Obviously someone starting the fourth team is important.

Yeah I work up from the bottom so I just read your thread, thought oops and was just about to edit my post :p

I would like to know if I am be going to make a map or admin, because if not I would like to sign-up for a team.

Judging from the previous posts, it seems that many people wouldn't be comfortable with you as an admin, but you could be one of the map makers or be on a team. It depends how involved you want to be with the game. The map makers pretty much make the map and then aren't involved with the game much (or at all) after that. So if you think you'll have a long-term interest in this game, I'd highly recommend signing up for a team. ;)
