aegis cruiser vs battleship

The first Aegis warships, The Ticonderoga Class of 1983 entered a fleet about the same time that the Iowa class were being modernized and reintroduced. A fleet of aegis vessels would be no match for a single BB with a couple aegis vessels in support.

Aegis vessels could not compete with BB in the role they've filled so well, shore bombardment. Even today, we are planning a new bombard platform.

All our BB's are currently out of comminsion because they are incredibly expensive and their primary role is marine support.

I never used AEGIS until recently, I was at war with Arabia (a 2 turn trip across the sea in transports) I had 6 FULL transports of modern armor with an occasional mech inf for defense. Arabia had been doing boming runs on my ships, but I figure, they can take it, plus I have air superiority covering most of the channel.

I send them accross and it is a complete massacure!!!! Every single one of them is destroyed by subs. I felt so sure they did not need an escort, I knew from my spy they had no battleships or destroyers, but silly me thought subs were usless and ignored them. It took 3 AEGIS to clear the channel of all their subs.

now u know prowess of those cute looking subs:lol:

I have no idea, i just call them subs.

btw who know why are sub call boats instead of ships?

I think it is the same reason they call it cargo when it goes by ship, and shipment when it goes by car!

Seriously though, maybe because of the German U-boats in world war 2?

Come to think of it, the subs DO look ike u-boats, from the front anyway.

Most U.S. battlewagons are being sold, scrapped, or being used for missle practice.there's less than 10 left that are still commissioned. Aegis cruisers are predominating now.

Contributing to the Sub debate, I have found in my games that subs attacking my battleships hasn't really made a big dent. Maybe I've been lucky but they seem to do well enough. Besides, most of my fleet is stacked with battleships by the time I can build AEGIS crusiers.

And the AEGIS would be a good idea if the Ai in civ3 threw Cruise missilles at boats like they did in CIv2 but they don't really do that this time round.... any thoughts?

The A.I. does shoot your ships w/ cruise missles, even on Cheiftan. It happened to me once, but only when my destroyer was down to 1 hp.

AEGIS is a good idea even without subs or cruise missles in the game:
A) AEGIS require uranium and aluminum to build, i.e. good for oil crisis.
B)I have seen AEGIS win against 2~4 battleships; it is a good fleet defender, as i said before.

P.S.- I call myself naval freak for a reason, u know.

Mainly because when they were first introduced, the "powers that be" in all the main navies were battleship men, and slightly snobbish about the fact.

If you go back to the days of sail, the word "ship" strictly applied only to a three-masted square-rigged vessel with three levels to each mast. Because these were the type of vessel that stood in the line of battle, the word "ship" took on implications of size, power and importance in naval circles, so that by the time navies ran on steam and steel, anything small and "minor" would be called a "boat" instead.

When the first "submersible vessels" arrived, they were small and dangerous, and commanded by very junior officers - there was no way that the lords of the battleship were going to attach the word "ship" to them.

It's for the same reason that torpedo-boats weren't called torpedo-ships...

BTW CrackedCrystal: subs were termed boats right from day 1 in the Royal Navy and (as far as I can establish) the US Navy; long before either came up against u-boats. Essentially the Germans, British and Americans were all following a parallel naming convention.

Lets face it in real life how often are major surface combatants roaming the ocean alone. The CG is for the most part a defendive and air interdiction asset, they defend the battle group. The BB can provide the heavy hitting long term bombardment like no other. The CG can provide some pin-point strikes (cruise missles) and area denial (CM with submunitions) but if you want to push the bad-guys 23 miles inland - have a battleship. Infact the USN has been examining the need for a gun system with better performance than the 5". Gee, never saw that one coming with the retirement of the Iowa Class. The best answer as I see it - battle groups (perhapse this is an issue for infogames, "armies at sea" - and yes all "armies" should be unloadable and upgradable but we won't get into that here.) Pair your BB with a CG. It's what I do.

Proof that a high post count does NOT equal knowledge. ;)

The research path to AEGIS does not lead you to victory. I aim for MA, then it's over (most of the time even before that) Now the internet wonder is added to miniaturization, it's possible that other research paths are added to my 'strategy'. So, once I've build a AEGIS, we'll get back to you...

Don't you build any carriers? I just love them, p.ex. they're good for reprisal acts ;), if any annoying civ has declared war on you. Also, they're very useful, if you for example have a lot of marines in your transports and want to take over their cities at once. You can use bombers to soften up their defenses and take them over with the marines (they're weak, I know), but if you bomb their cities down to the grond walls, even they can take over cities. That's always a vital part of my invasion strategy, couldn't do without carriers.
