After intro movie - gray screen with music?

If I try to start the game with the intro movie enabled it runs all the way through and then switches to a full screen of gray with music playing in the background. Nothing I try with the keyboard or mouse makes any impact.

If I try to start the game with the intro movie disabled the game immediately crashes with the message "Civilization V has stopped working".

This is the same with both Direct 9 and Direct 10/11.

As anyone else experienced this?
Any suggestions?
I have updated my drivers but I don't even get as far as an options page to adjust the resolution or anything else.

In "My Documents\My Games\Sid Meiers Civilization 5\", open usersettings.ini in Notepad and disable the full screen mode, and report what happens please.

Also please computer specs, and update your driver and the directX installation .

I had the same problem and that helped me finding out the solution.
I started the game in windowed mode and it was still all black, after alt tabbing and back CIV V appeared in all his glory. I went into video options and found out that the root of the problem was in the default refresh frequency at wich the game was starting (60). I upped it to 70 and now i'm able to play it fullscreen with no problems

I actually went into the Directx11 folder and changed full screen mode to 0 in there.
The game does now run in windows, although i'm sometimes unable to access things below the toolbar at the bottom.
I assume i need to change the resolution somehow? But the video options only give me the choice of 2.

I have the same problem.

With fullscreen on, after the intro movie, the game crashes to the desktop - but I can still hear the game music playing and sometimes a gray box appears in the top left of the desktop.

With fullscreen off, the games loads in a window. However, the resolution is very low (much of the game cannot be seen - it's outside the window). In game options, the resolution option is blank and I can't change it or see any resolution options. In fact, all the video settings are blank.

The suggestion above to change the frequency from 60 to 70 sounds like it would be worth a shot. How do I do that?

I'm using Directx 11 (the game won't start in 9).
My Nvidia 9800 dirvers are up-to-date.
My specs are on or above the recommended specs.

Any help would be much appreciated!

For me the soulution to this, after running windowed, disabling intro, and all that

Just turn windows aero off
(switch to a windows basic theme)

Now runs intro and everything 1900 x 1080, 8xAA, everything dx9 or dx11
