After years of playing, what new things have you found in Civ 4?

It doesn't mean Charly won't attack you, he's in pre-war mode unless he's at war with someone.
I don't how long Boudica has been pleased towards you, but she is also in the pre-war mode. And a DP with her won't save you.

After years of playing, since the date the game was released ......

I FOUND THE HOLY MOUNTAIN!!!!!!

Spoiler :

Alas, I already chopped several forests top the left of it :(

At least it has a few lake tiles, and I built the Statue of Liberty so it gets a free specialist.

Just learned today that a human player city that is unhappy because it is without a military unit, becomes happy if an Ai has one of its military units in your city. Not that this is something you should count on, but the knowledge of it is still interesting. Any military unit in a city provides happiness, even a rival civs. Cool.

That is so cool!
I had no idea it came with its own picture.

TIL that if you have "No Vassals" checked, then you can settle the new world on Terra and pay no Colony Maintenance costs.

Yes, I think No Vassals turns off Colony Maintenance. I will keep that in mind for botm.

How do you guys not know this? I'm pretty sure it's in the tooltip for this option, under advanced options on custom game.

Maybe this isn't new for many but... City (-ies) settled on coast of 10 tiles inland sea also counts as coastal city (so gets 4 trade routes with Currency and GLH wonder if player owns it). Building 3 cities around Caspian Sea in Earth18 scenario paid off instantly (although I was ready to get *just* 2 trade routes)

This was new to me, and apparently also to many other SGOTM players - Trade routes get no bonus at all for being foreign. The only bonus is from sustained peace. After a war they usually won't be worth more than internal trade routes (and rarely form) until 25 turns of peace. All there in the tooltip, of course, but who would ever read those. :mischief:

Ah, but you only get the sustained peace bonus with foreign routes, right?

Yes, of course. This is the bonus that normally boosts foreign trade routes. The difference is that it is not a bonus that applies directly because trade route is foreign, it also requires sustained peace. Sustained peace bonus increases 3%/turn, capping at 150% (it is always 150% if you have never been at war). Normally a trade route will have +25% modifier for connection to capital. When sustained peace bonus reaches 75% in 25 turns, this bonus, together with connection to capital bonus, combines to +100% and you get one extra commerce from the trade route.

Woot. I actually knew that. Because I like to hover over everything, and there it is :)

Kind of similarly to how Astro trade routes don't really mean all that much if you already get foreign trade routes from a galley-reachable continent nearby (except you will get more of them due to more cities available, if you have loads of cities yourself and therefore get some internal trade routes pre-Astro).

I learned that I could build destroyers without Astronomy. I was avoiding it because I wanted to keep my Colossus bonus. Then I could build destroyers when I got combustion. I was shocked - for some reason, I thought all ocean units except Caravel needed Astronomy.

If you save while the game is paused it'll still be paused even after closing out of the game and reloading the save. So if, purely hypothetically, you mysteriously find that none of the buttons work and reloading/restarting doesn't fix it...unpause the game. Totally didn't take me two minutes to figure that out, no sir :hammer2:.
