AG12 - Space Race (Sid)

Well I say we go now and see what happens but I'm not optimistic. Do the Aztecs have infantry? if so then no way we do it but we should try anyway. Even with rifles it would be tough but it is certainly our only hope. I'd go with the quicker hill landing. I think the only hope is numbers not strength so the extra mountain bonus is not worth it.

I didn't buy a map, but Babylon offered to sell their WM to us for our WM +1 gold, so it can't be that inaccurate. I would launch next turn. We don't have to send empty Galleys (and probably won't, since I cancelled a lot of Galley builds since we didn't have the troops to fill them), but we might be able to put the less important pikemen in the Veteran Galleys. The pikemen won't make it to Tenochtitlan after (if) we capture it, but they will leave all of our Knights intact after the first assault (hopefully) and might prove a distraction if we move them off the mountain.

got it.........

Not much to report. Got everyone loaded and shipped over. They are ready to land this turn on the hill. Babs build internet. I had some hope as the ottomans had an Aztec city but the Aztecs took it back. Hopefully they lost a lot of cavs on that. We lost no ships and have been at war with the Aztecs for 5 turns. If we take the city they might talk and we could make peace rather than defend the counter. Good luck.

Wow that's fantastic. We have hope.

The Aztecs won't talk. What should I do with their former capital? Should I abandon it and disband the knights that survived? Should I give it to the Ottomans and provoke agression between those civs at war? Advantage is that our knights will be tranported back to our mainland.

I personally would abandon the city and disband the units and galleys. These are at this moment costing us a lot of gpt that we really can use.

Why not give it to the Ottos to get our knights home for infra rushing.

IHT: I land the knights and 4 vet pikes on the hill. The rest of the pikes capture the two Aztec workers in the south or scattered around the knights. This is meant to distract the Aztec troops. The pike on flat land should be more appealing for them than knights with the same defense on a hill.

IT: The Aztecs kill the complete all pikes on the flat lands and hit one pike in the stack of knights. All knights are spared.

Turn 1 (1410 AD) With 51 knights we manage to kill 2 infantry, 3 rifles, a guerilla and 2 cavalry. We have three knights with movemement points left to defend the city.

The thanks of our people? Severe war weariness  Lux tax goes to 30%.

IT: The Aztecs don't attack the city at all  They do kill a number of knights though.

The Great Library gives us Monarchy, Theology, Printing Press, Education, Gunpowder, Banking, Astronomy, Chemistry, Democracy, Economics, Navigation, Physics, Metallurgy, Free Artistry, Theory of Gravity, Magnetism, Military Tradition, Steam Power, Nationalism, Medicine, Communism, Industrialization, Electricity, Scientific Method, Sanitation, Espionage, The Corporation, Refining, Steel, Atomic Theory, Combustion, Replaceable Parts, Flight, Mass Production, Electronics, Motorized Transport, Rocketry, Computers, Space Flight, Miniaturization, Ecology, Synthetic Fibers, Satellites, Ironclads, Fascism [party]

It remains strange that we didn't get Music Theory and Amphibious War.

Turn 2 (1415 AD) The Ottomans are the only ones ahead of us in tech: Fission.

The good news: we have rubber. The bad: we lack the rest and there is no trade option (apart from saltpeter). Coal is close by though, in German Hareid near our core. Other coal is in the east, also in German lands. Aluminum and Oil are in the south, in Germans territory. No aliminum: no Apollo Project :(
I can get us coal by roading the 2nd German coal. Aliminum and Oil are not tradeable. But the Ottomans have more than one source of both. The Aztecs also have both (but don't know what Aluminum looks like).

War weariness shot to the highest level and the Aztecs won't talk. I push lux tax towards 50%. We have 25 knights left, but we are well within our upkeep limit. I give Teno to the Ottomans and the knights fly home.

I give the Vikings Ecology for Music Theory, Amphibious War, 450 gold and 63 gpt.

IT: Germany has lost a lot of troops. Only 15 units are running through our lands.

Turn 3 (1420 AD) I renew our two lux for one lux deal with the Ottomans. We pay an extra 11 gpt.

IT: Germany now comes with a lot more troops to take the Ottoman cities in the north. Tyre deposed to Germany. It is logical, but we had it for so long :( The Aztecs have Teno back. Our first factory is in Persepolis.

Turn 4 (1425 AD) I can get no more than straight up peace with the Aztecs. They then give us Oil, Furs, Dyes and 2 gold for Atomic Theory. Lux tax back to 0%. We now make 381 gpt.

The price for iron are absurd: 100 gpt.

IT: Well, we connected the coal, but the Ottomans now take Larsa, so that won't help us :(

Turn 5 (1430 AD) Germany learned Nationalism. So now I have the liberty to sell them a useless tech, Fascism, for iron and gems. I waited until now because I didn't want to give them Steam or Nationalism.

Turn 6 (1435 AD) Not a lot to do. We obviously have not enough workers. It's really pathetic.

IT: Germany has Larsa back. Our Tyre probably will fall to the Ottomans.

Turn 7 (1440 AD)

The Ottomans land a SoD near Larsa. I will have a settler ready, since it is size 1.

Turn 8 (1445 AD)

IT: Hmm, size 1 Larsa is captured by the Ottomans, not razed :( They DO raze another city to the east.

Turn 9 (1450 AD) A settler is ready to claim a spot near Larsa, but I fear that we won't get a decent place there, unless it is 2 tiles from Larsa and therefore considered by the Otto's as agresssive.

We can't trade Aluminum and coal is absurdly expensive. But with only 9 worker railroading would be difficult anyway. We have a lot of money and could steal Fission safely, but all civs are Fascists, which means veteran spies and less chance for us on success. War with Babylon (they also know it) and Ottomans means sure loss imho.

Well this would be quite an accomplishment if we could pull it out. The question is how. I haven't done a space race in c3c but I'll look at it tonight before commenting.

Hehe, we think alike Mark, but you will get in trouble for suggesting that.

Are we on a three-man rotation right now? I'll try to get this tomorrow. Not sure how we can win this though. It's now feasible, but still very difficult.

I think we can do this. A few questions. Can MGLs/armies be used to build Space ship parts or are these like wonders? If so (and even if not) it might be worth building a few vet MA and taking our aluminum and coal from Germany. Do we have all the resources necessary for space victory on the continent? Why did we buy iron without coal? The parts are really a question of tech, resources and having a prebuild ready and maybe some sabatoge. We don't need that many cities to be productive. I'd be building workers like mad from the outlying cities to RR and add to a core of maybe 4-5 cities. Then factory rush, then hospital rush then nuc plant. Resources seem to be key. Germany must be pretty beaten down from ottomans so 10 vet MA could crush them if we have the time. We either have to gift civs to the point of seeing resources to trade or take the resources. I'd hate to gift germany to the MA though.

We should really discuss a plan before moving on.

OOPs we need Aluminum for MA

You can still buy aluminum and later take your own source.

Why didn't I buy coal? Well I tried to give the Germans two sources but it failed, as described in my turnlog. I didn't want to pay the Otto's about 100 gpt for it while having only 7 workers.

Attacking the Germans: Aluminum is not for sale. We CAN build tanks and mech infs. This should be a real problem for them as well. I like the idea, but I think we need more troops to blitzkrieg them. We don't have THAT much time, so an overpowering force should probably be necessary.

You are probably right with Factory/Hospital/Nuc Plant.

EDIT: Why do we have only 7 workers? Well it's unforgiveable :) But we acknowledged very early in the game that there was just one way out. We did everything we could to accomplish that goal (which took two tries), but didn't think about 'what then'. At least that is my perception of the situation.
