AG8 - Let's try Sid

Yes, I am up. (Real) Life is taking over again, and I can't commit to playing this until tomorrow night. :(

If you need to swap me with the one in front that is fine, if not I will start (and hopefully finish) the turns tomorrow night.

If a small miracle happens I may be free to play in the early hours before bed...

Hi Aggie,

I was just trying to catch up on the state of the game before posting :)

Sorry to have fallen off the radar like that but a family emergency immediately followed by a business trip kept me away. Then I got back just in time for the forum upgrade :D

I definitely would like to continue this game but I'll be away on business tomorrow (Thurs) and Friday so might not be able to check in until the weekend.

Ted

Cheers :)

And I am totally busy in RL still.

Last night was a total write-off as tonight will be too. :(

Aggie, I am really sorry, and I really want to play this game, but I fear that tongiht is not going to happen either. Let me know if you want to go before me or if you want to wait - any solution is good with me.

anarres, I can understand that you are busy. But can you tell me if you can play this weekend? I can not take the game today, but tomorrow should be possible. I'm thinking about swapping with you or letting TedJackson play before you.

I can play later today I think.

Preturn:

Renegotiate peace with the Byzantenes - I give Iron and 71 gpt in return for Theology and 13 gold.
Give Theology, 3 gpt and 11 gold to the Inca for Chivalry.
Give Theology and Chivalry to India for Invention, 29 gpt and 1 gold.
Give Chivalry to the Byzantines for 58 gpt and 279 gold.
Give Chivalry and Theology to Sumeria for Gunpowder.

Summary:
Inca lack Gunpowder, we are paying them 3 gpt for 20 turns.
Byzantenes have Education, we are paying Iron and 13 gpt for 20 turns, and are giving Silks and 15 gpt for Dyes for another 4 turns.
Portugal have Education and Printing Press.
Sumeria are level on techs, we have an RoP for 2 more turns, and they are giving 8gpt as part of peace which runs out in 4 turns.
Rome are lacking Theology, Chivalry and Invention, and are giving 14 gpt for 20 turns.
India are level in techs. We are giving 99 gpt as part of peace for another 4 turns, and they are giving 29 gpt for 20 turns.

Science set to Chemistry with a scientist.

I change Mauch Chuck from Courthouse to Granary, and do a fair amount of tile MM. This includes shaving a turn of Herioc Epic. :)

Since the WM is as mapped as it is going to be pre-Navigation I decide to bring all of our ships home.

1 (370AD): Found New Salamanca where the settler was ready.

On checking Ganogeh I see it is not set to emphasise production. Nad, please set your governor default to emphasis production. I have mentioned it a couple of times now and so has Aggie - I guess it has just been missed when you read the turn report since you didn't say that you didn't want to do it. This is a minor thing, but it does give a few extra shields, and can mean a turn difference in building a unit or improvement.

Hmm. We have 20 warriors costing us 40 gpt. Now we don't need them for MP I start culling - we are now down to 4 warriors, a saving of 32 gpt.

2 (380AD): The last 4 warriors are gone, spears and pikes now defend our borders.

3 (390AD): I am building city improvements where they are needed, and Knights when they are all done (with the exception of cities that get 15 shields (which are buildign Pikes).

4 (400AD): I cancel our RoP with Sumeria, and I have to renegotiate peace with India to get our 99 gpt back.

AI: The Portugese complete Copernicus'.

5 (410AD):

AI: Our Dyes deal with the Byzantines runs out, I don't bother renewing it since we may want to attack them next.

6 (420AD): We get 1 riot from the lux deal going. We would have had another but I stopped it by cycling through the cities.

Portugal has Gems to trade - I take them for Incense and Silks. This must mean Portugal has Navigation or Metallurgy!

7 (430AD): We have over 1800 gold, soon we can upgrade our MW's, but I will wait as it could be more useful in trade soon.

AI: Portugese start Smiths.

8 (440AD):

9 (450AD):

10 (460AD): We currently have 2676 gold in the bank. We have 34 MW's that need 120 gold each to upgrade to Knights, which is 4080 gold.

Since India has kept a 1hp curragh in our waters for the last 10 turns it is safe to assume they will keep it there forever. I suggest we wait 14 turns until our peace with India runs out, then we get whatever we can for GPT in a peace renegotiation, then we demand they leave and get them to declare war. If our rules don't allow us making several demands in a turn to get them "ultra" furious we probably should try this.

We have 10 turns left of peace with the Byzantines. We can consider them as our next target after the next person has played, as it will be in the pre-turn of the player after next that we need to decide.

I have been building for war once the basic improvements are done. The option to build libraries and research at max is a tempting one, but even at the start of my turns after the warrior cull we could only get 45 turns with science maxed so there was no gpt deficit. Maybe after our next war with the Byzantines and India we can consider this, it could work.

Diplo is very stagnent, everyone seems to have dried up since my origianl trading session. The civs seem to be heading for the top branch, although they must come for Chemistry soon. I think we will need to wage war before cavs, and since the Byzantines don't have Saltpeter we should be OK with Knights.

One final note: Please engineer a war for my next set of turns! I still love the game but all I've had is boring builder turns that take an hour a go. ;)

Nice trade. We got gunpowder too!

I think I play before you so I will try my best to get you a war  Of course, I tried my best on that last turn. Get us to republic and set up for war with the Byzantines and look what happened. Some trade shoots my plan in the foot.

Do you need to set preferences to production for every town? I thought there was an option to apply things to new towns as well. Or does that not work on preferences? All I dknow is that I didn't set anything on my turns.

You need to set the default governor settings. This is the "Default for new cities" checkbox on the governor screen. Whatever you have when you tick that gets saved to your conquests.ini and applies across all games.

Once you set it you never have to think about it again, except when playing older games with cities founded before you set the default.

The big weed in my turns was forgetting the lux deal running out, when I clearly stated when it would run out in my first post.

The big question in my mind now is whether we attack the Byzantines in 10 turns, or whether we wait for Cavs. My main problem with waiting for Cavs is that it could be a long time - and by then we could be facing huge army costs. The more I think about it the more convinced I am that the Byzantines have to die, and soon.

3 MW's are in an army, so we only have to upgrade 31 (3720 gold).

Making false peace treaties is in the exploit list. So we can't do that...

I will play my 10 turns now. I don't expect a lot of discussion for my turns. Things will be different in 10 turns though!!

IHT: Things look great. I am amazed by the low science speed of the AI. OK, Portugal may have a number of techs in the upper branch of the tree, but there are some non-required techs between them. It DOES look like Portugal will be the big boy in this game. They are snatching all the wonders.

IT: Bombay, New Salamanca: worker->worker.

Turn 1 (470 AD)

IT: Salamanca and St. Regis: knight->knight, Tonawanda: granary->market, Mauch Chunck: courthouse->market, Oka: harbor->courthouse.

Turn 2 (480 AD)

IT: Centralia: knight->knight.

Turn 3 (490 AD) Still no Chemistry around...

IT: Onnontare: worker->worker, Allegheny and Oil Springs: knight->knight, Akwesasne: aquaduct->market, Gaughnawaga: granary->knight, Grand river: courthouse->knight, Gayagaahe: courthouse->market.

Turn 4 (500 AD) Portugal knows Chemistry! For now it's a monopoly, so no deals are even remotely possible.

IT:  India declares war on the Byzantines  Bangalore, Ganges, Ganogeh: worker->worker, Niagara Falls: granary->courthouse, Cattaraugus: knight-> knight.

Turn 5 (510 AD) Portugal is still the only one with Chemistry.

IT: The Byzantines destroyed India!
Salamanca: knight->knight, Kente: worker->worker, Chondote: courthouse->harbor, Khanawake: market->knight, Gewauga: courthouse->harbor,

Turn 6 (520 AD)

IT: Goigouen: market->knight, St. Regis: knight->knight.

Turn 7 (530 AD)

IT: Centralia, Oil Springs, Grand Rivber: knight->knight.

Turn 8 (540 AD) I try to safely steal a tech (2412 gold) from Portugal and succeed. I choose Chemistry as the tech. We had more than 5600 gold and I looked like a waste not to use it.

I renegotiate peace with Sumeria. In that deal I give them Chemistry. We get Education, Printing Press and 19 gold in return.

Portugal and the Byzantines have Banking and Astronomy, Sumeria only have Astronomy.

The Byzantines give me Banking for Chemistry and 800 gold. Portugal has Democracy and Economics. The Inca and Romans are backward. We COULD get Astronomy for Banking and 1200 gold from Sumeria, but we need the money for upgrades. In fact: I already spent something of our upgrade gold on it.

I switch the knights to banks in all cities... A number of cities have no temples anymore (ToA is obsolete after Education). Those get taxmen or a scientist. Min science on Music Theory...

IT: Indus: worker->worker. Portugal finishes Magellan.

Turn 9 (550 AD) The trading opportunity is gone. Sumeria has Banking now.

I leave it here. 550 AD is a nice year. Next turn our treaty with the Byznatines ends. We could upgrade 20 MW's. We have 2512 gold in our treasury and make 352 gpt.

Lets attack the Byzantines now, and get Sumeria in on it.

We neeed an update on whether or not the Byzantines have Saltpeter yet, but only for military intel (I still think we should attack whatever).

Can we have some pics of the Byzantine front? I started builing roads to them at the end of my turn, are we in a position to attack quicky once we have upgraded?
