Age of the Sail

You might want to post this in the Creation and Customization forum. You'll probably get alot more constuctive advice over there.

What joycem10 said.

And you should know that 'Age of sail' refers to another period in history...

;)

I am preparing to start my first mod, Age of the Sail. It will start very early in history when man first discovered the boat, and will continue on to odern day. If you can give me any help or ideas, I would appreciate them.

Okay, so tell us whats different than in vanilla civ? :)

:yup:

Technically, the "Age of Sail" refers to the period from roughly 1500 AD to 1850 AD when the sailing ship established itself as the dominate warship of the period, replacing the oar-powered galley, and in turn being succeeded by the steamship. However, using it as the title to your mod gives the viewer a clear idea as to it being a naval mod devoted to ships of all kinds. I am a naval historian, and have designed and assisted in the design on miniature naval war games. Presently, I am reworking the ship values in the game. I would be happy to provide any assistance you may require.

Thanks for the help. My age of the sail mod is basically the history of ships from beginning of history, but should I change it to 1500-1850

I think that depends upon what technologies you use to define the evolution of ships, both from the direct (e.g., the screw propeller) and the indirect (the compass). Lay that out and it should give you a much better idea.

Best,

Oz

Looks interesting, I will take a longer look at it later. What are you using for your source data? Also, in the Med, the big Renaissance war galleys were still effective units up to about 1600 or so. Looks like you could use some help on cities. Do you mind contributions?

At this point i think I'll just use the 1500-1850 idea for my mod. Once again thanks alot.

Here is my list of civilizations and units so far
Looking at that list you should probably change the starting date the US was not a country in 1500. Also the city list for them includes cities that were first founded after 1850.

The problem in any historical game is how do you deal with the US, since it has only existed as an independent country for 232 years, which is a very short time compared to Europe. The Dutch ares somewhat similar, dating from their revolt against Spain in 1568. For reasonable accuracy, probably it would be best not to include the US in the Age of Sail. Finland was under control of Sweden and then Russia, as was Estonia, so it would be better to have Sweden and Russia in the game. The Ottomans were in actual control of Arabia, so they should be there instead of the Arabians. The Chinese could have been a factor if their leadership had been different, so you could include them, but the Japanese pretty much walled themselves off, so you would not have to include them. The shipping of the Indians was pretty much in the hands of the Arabs, and if you wanted to include the Arabs on a historical map, you could base them in India.

Thanks for the info, for my eras, I'm splitting into 1500's, 1600's, 1700's, and 1800's. For america, I want to keep it still and and have it use native american units up to 1700 and swich, but I will consider change.

Can anyone fing a really detailed Eurasia map?

Hmm, you have Arab leaders that would be possible, but they are not necessarily from Arabia. However, looking at your city list, one possibility immediately comes to mind, although he would be a fraction early for you, having died in 1546. Khair-ed-din Barbarossa, leader of the largest fleet of the Barbary Corsairs, and later became Lord High Admiral of the Turkish Fleet. Started out in North Africa, and was a scourge to the Christian states in the Western Med. Barbarossa for short, from his red beard.

Oh, and Louis of France should be Louis the XIV, not the IV.
