AI doesn't expand to other continents?

I have just finished a game (ok so it was only on Chieftan) where all the civs started on the same continent. Game ended with me winning by space race and I didn't bother going to the other massive continent but the other civs didn't either just loaded the earlier saves up and they had sailing. Anyone else found this or is it because it's only on chieftan level.
All previous civ versions expanded across sea no problem?

I've seen the AI colonise other lands on Terra maps, but they tend to slow down after their early expansion with Galleys, so the far continent isn't always too hotly contended.

The civs are slow to expand to other conteninets, and because your game was on settler, they had severe disadvanteges which slowed their expansion even further. They will expand. I have even seen them settle a one tile island before.

The AI didn't expand in my warlord game either. They had like one or two cities, but the continent remained largely unsettled.

In my game the AI expanded to a little island. The continent (and i am talking huge) was left alone and it was close to our continent. I had traded the world map (to up the diplomatic relations) with all civ's.
It was a space race they had all the time in the world, the continent was crowded (I didn't wage any wars (the ai had one civ kill off another civ)).
It just feels wrong.
