They'll pile up on a hill that isn't in a city radius (which isn't THAT stupid) but rather than immediately build a road so that subsequent pigpiling laborers can move in easier, THEY'LL JUST WALK TO AN EVEN FARTHER AWAY HILL! It's a good idea to activate a few when this starts happening to just build a road so that if the crazy AI decides to change its mind, workers won't be walking all over the place accomplishing NOTHING (which is another bug already many times mentioned in earlier posts).:crazyeyes

Oops, I forgot to mention, this is when you are lazy and use the Shift-A command, (automate without replace).

Well, I believe it depends on why the AI send the workers that way.

I have never experience that as my automated workers just build a road (sometimes even rail) all the way until they reach their destinations:cool:

Rather than just doing the full automate it is better to do so of the other automatic options like clean poloution etc. This way they tend to work better.

I almost never use the Automate with workers until very late in the game, usually RR building time. I've had too many 'pigpiles' to trust the :sniper:AI to handle this important task early in the game.

I have had much luck with the "SHIFT-I" method. Yeah, the still pig-pile, but not as bad. I usually put 3-8 workers next to the city and SHIFT-I. When they hace done everything that can be done IN THE CITY RADIUS ONLY, they wait for new orders.
On one really late game I had 200+ worker going crazy on SHIFT-A. I let them go for a long time, and the connected every square with railroads, even squares not in a city radius.

Problems with various "automate"s.

Shift-I: not too bad, but then workers will destroy certian improvements I put there for a reason (I HATE THAT).

Shift-P: if you get a turn where they clean up everything, you have to make them do something else.

Shift-A: they'll sometimes clean up pollution, sometimes improve land in a semi-intelligent manner, sometimes pigpile, and ALWAYS cut down your trees that fall outside city radius (REALLY ANNOYING)

Ctrl-Shift-R: flawless. Until you have railroads where you want them, and then, since the shortest-path-first algorithm in civ2 works ALL the time, you can't get them to build any more long railroads.
