Hey everyone, my friend is trying to get me to start taking Aikido with him at Rhodes College over in Memphis(only place in the whole area to teach it). Should i take it? It does interest me, not using punches or kicks but your opponents on momentum and grabs and such, anyone here know aikido?

Hmm - a lot of the focus is on control of though, mind and body - it probably won't be what you expect at first (if the instructor is good)- but you might get a lot out of it.

i sure could use some martial arts disipline, i'm a hot head :D

no but I use to take Wing Chung Kung Fu...which was the first Martial Arts Bruce Lee studied. The thing about any Martial Arts is you have study it for a long time and put in hours and hours of training for it to be effective. People think they can take an hour class a couple times a week and be a good martial artist...those people tend only to know enough to get their butts kicked ;).

A couple things you have to ask yourself is would you be able to put in that amount of time...because if your not then don't even start it you'll only waste your money and time. Akido I believe still uses punches and kicks they just use an opponents momentum to pull them off balance or to cause greater amount of damage.

Also you should not learn martial arts if you are only interested in being a better fighter...that is not what martial arts is completely about...as the name implies it is a fighting artform. I made this mistake and decided that the Martial Arts was not for me and took up boxing.

i'm already a good fighter, i do know it gives u discipline and i sure do need some, cause i tend to lose my temper easily on people who make fun of me and stuff, so i figure why not look into martial arts

i think you should, your fighting skills wont help you in akido, its centered around a self defence kind of attitude if you do then remember ''fluid motion'' be as the water in a stream flowing around the rocks (i studied a little):ninja: :)

i have not taken aikido myself but from what i've heard from others is it good training but almost useless in fighting.

Hmm, I've heard its one of the better fighting systems. Anyone ever see Game of Death, you know the Bruce Lee flick which he didn't get to complete cause he died?

The 2nd to last warrior that Bruce and his two buddies had to defeat was the Akido master (the top floor was Kareem Abdul Jabar). I would really like to learn Akido, when I am settled more (in phsycial location and spirit) I want to take it and become a black belt.

why not learn something that has been proven to work in the real world instead, like brazilian jiu-jitsu? ;)

well from what i understand, in aikido u don't get belts.

I would chose Krav Maga (http://www.kravmaga.com/) barely because I've heard that it's very effective for real fighting, it's not to common (I always want to be different ;) ) and I can be sure that the training hall won't be full of muslims :D :flamedevil:

The akido type method is a very effective self defence system, especialy if you're attacked by some big, stupid giant who can't handle being proven wrong in an argument and must try & settle it through his superior strength.

Here's an interesting fact. Little do people know, but one of the worlds deadliest martial arts is tai chi, but it takes a lot of time & dedication to master.

SunTzu,
just remember, don't get mad, get even. If someone makes fun of you, make fun of them. If they they take a swing at your head, catch their wrist in your right hand (to counter a right handed swing) and place your left palm on their elbow, from there, you have good leverage to slam them into the ground or a wall and it's not hard at all to break their arm (even by accident, so be careful). If you're not quick enough to catch thier swing, take the hit, then kick them in the balls.

If they try to kick you, kicks are easier to block than punches, but don't block them. Instead, grab the foot and either lift it up above your head or basically hug it and take a couple of strides forward.
Just remember, there are no rules in self defence, but that's all martial arts should be used for.
Only fight words with words.

i've heard that it's good too. i think we should point out that it was developed by israelis...;)

how about smashing the shin with you elbow instead?

...or dislocating or breaking your arm with their shin.

Shins can be very tough.

So, SO true.
It's amazing how many people come in dojos just so they can takes a handful of classes, then think themselves as superior fighters...
Martial arts, just like any arts, is not something you practice a bit and then suddendly become a master in. It requires YEARS. I'm personnally practicing four times a week since a year and a half, and I don't even know all the basics yet.

Strictly speaking, there isn't belt in ANY of the traditional martial arts. There is white, then black (and sometimes brown). That's it.
Belts were an invention made for western people, who needed to get something to show progress. Westerners are used to get immediate return on investment, and have a hard time understanding that some things take years.
Hmm, I've heard its one of the better fighting systems.
Aikido is NOT a fighting system. Aikido is more about philosophy and harmony. It IS usable as a fighting system, and is efficient, because it uses martial technics that are extremely effectives in defence. But it's NOT its goal, its goal is reaching harmony. It's like using a crowbar to hit : it's very effective, but it's not its primary goal.

On a final note : martial arts require A LOT of dedication, discipline and perfectionism. You can try to see if you like, but the bottom line is, if you don't really feel the desire to continu for YEARS, then it's useless to start. Practicing some months will give nothing but wasted time and money. Trying to practice martial arts just to "know how to fight" is useless also. It doesn't go well with the underlying spirit of oriental martial arts.
To sum up : do it only if you really feel you'll spend years in it, and only for good reasons.

The grabbing and throwing martial arts tend to beat the punching and kicking ones. Therefore Aikido is king.

SunTzu,

[/i].

Tai Chi is VERY powerful if practiced for many years of one's life.

As for getting even, well getting mad is bad too, but getting even is also bad. If Ghandi could liberate people by not getting even, and Jesus could make such a lasting impression on the world by turning the other cheek, maybe there's something to dropping the fight.

elbows are in general harder than shins and if he has condtioned his shins he would probably not throw a high kick.

crosstraining beats all other martial arts and just because some grappling arts are good doesn't mean that all grappling arts are good.

steven seagal said back in 2000 that he was preparing a aikido student for pride fc., but we have not seen anything out of it yet. i'v heard positive comments about the aikido wrist locks though, but also negative comments.

about tai chi: some people says it is very powerful when you master the chi and the pressure points, but no one has ever proved it and it's probably bull****.
