ALC Game 16: Persia/Cyrus

move the scout SE than SW and report back. we need to see those tiles!

Nah, I'm going to regenerate the map since so many people are having issues with the idea of having it checked by a third party. However, I will instead be playing a continents map rather than fractal, since as I said, I think playing an isolated start as Cyrus would be a waste of time. Or simply, no fun. Same diff.

You need a thicker skin. Don't listen to everyone.

Anyway, my personal opinion is that checking for non isolated was fine (we just don't want the same game as last time), but checking for horses was what put people over the top.

If you want to play fractal, have it checked for ONLY non isolation.

Cheers.

Jesus, it is not as the starting location is good or the map was in any way altered.

But honestly, who wants to play Cyrus without horses in the early game?:)

I wouldn´t, and as this isn´t Multiplayer, we shouldn´t either. You shouldn´t listen to the whining, Sisiutil!:)

Yeah - play it out

It's your game. Sometimes I will play a random leader on random settings and the challenge is to do the best with what I am given, but sometimes I want to play a game with specific goals. Like I want an ankor wat priest factory, or I want to get some use out of a camel archer so I will play an oasis map.

Play for the goals that make it fun because frankly I don't want to see you get bored and quit. I might actually get some work done. :)

If someone wants to play a crazy shadow game, here is a start I rolled with Cyrus with Horses not so nearby, but with Mathematics!!!! popped by a hut and yes, horseback riding, too.

Luck is in the game, and not getting horses as Cyrus is so unlucky, it is not even fun, I guess.:mischief:

I'm really not trying to make anyone grumpy. I'm just saying that if you're not going to play with random UU resources, then you're really not playing the way the average user is going to play. Sure, it'd be nice if I were playing Cyrus or Hatty to always have Horses near me. It'd be great if playing as JC or AC I could always have Iron. But it's not always going to happen. From the sounds of it, Sisiutil was going to re-roll the map until Horses were near. How is that not map manipulation? I can understand the desire not to play an isolated start again, because of the "been there, done that" feeling. I'm not sure that same philosophy applies to UU resources tho'.

But once again, that's just my opinion. He's certainly welcome to play however he wants to play. But for me, one of the things I enjoyed most about the Mongol game was the suspense of whether we'd end up with Horses for the Keshik. Taking away that suspense seems to take something away from it.

I mostly agree. I think any kind of third party checking of the map takes some of the fun out of it and it also makes it harder to compare the game to a typical one where you aren't given any information before you start. That is also why I think you should avoid Fractal if you don't want to run the risk of being isolated. I fully understand the lacking desire to play an isolated start after your last ALC which was quite rough, but in that case I would pick a map type where you are not isolated to prevent the necessity of having a third party check the map beforehand.
Playing with what you are given and adapting to those settings seems like the most fun to me.

With that being said, it is entirely up to Sisiutil how he decides to play the ALC's. I for one know that I will be following the series no matter if he has someone checking the map or not ;)

I would start by moving the Scout SW 1 then SE onto the hill. The forest just west of the hill would block some sight if you come from the east onto the hill where going west first would reveal it and then being on the hill would reveal the east.

My first inclination for settling would be NW 1 just under the corn. Having the option to put a lighthouse and harbor in would be nice. It does also keep both hills in for produtcion.

EDIT: Play the map. The purpose of these ACL games is to use the leader and their traits/units so we can learn. If we want to learn about Cyrus and his ability to use his Immortals in the early game we need neighbors and horses near by. Granted when I play my normal games I do not adhere to that and I play what I get, but this is not the same case. Stick with it and play it out.

Don't Regenerate! I have no problem with the start being checked by a third party. Run the ALC's how you want. I for one will always follow them. My suggestion is to move the scout SE then SW.

I suppose some will be whining when Sis uses his (preconfirmed) horses to roll over the locals. But I for one will enjoy learning how best to leverage Cyrus' unique assets, as I probably could not win at Prince if I chose Cyrus and didn't find any ponies. Some would prefer that there are no horses so that they will have more of a reason to put in their 2cents if Sis falls on hard times, which probably won't happen with equines nearby. Perhaps most informative to me would be if he has to tackle one enemy to steal his horses. Can you please roll that start? Otherwise, stick with what you have.

:agree:

Horses don't have to be in Persepolis' fat cross.

However, they should at least be a city or two away, so I vote for somebody to confirm it for Sisiutil (should he ask for it).

How do you highlight a leader's UU if it never appears?

Listen to the masses Sisiutil and play it out. Most people don't seem to have a problem with you checking the start on this one.

Carry on the good work.

is there a pre-game discussion thread...that link is going to the last game
thanks

I agree with the "don't regenerate" faction. It's your game, play it the way you want to, Sisiutil. If you want to be sure there are horses within reasonable distance to maximize Cyrus' native abilities, then you have every right to do so. Your goal, IMHO, has always been to try out a leader and examine how his traits and unique civ-pieces work together (or don't, in some cases :) ). Who'd want to be an Iron-free Rome if you're trying to show how powerful Praetorian assaults are? And playing Cyrus without his UU doesn't really satisfy your master plan. So I say continue on, ignore the others - if they want to go off and play as Cyrus in their own games, or start their own public Cyrus games in other threads, then it just means more variety to compare notes.

Cheater. (10 char)

Well I'm sorry but the quote below sums up the purpose and enjoyment of the ALCs for me:

The idea of the All Leaders Challenge is that I'm going to play a game with each of the Civ IV leaders. With the help of all the posters who participate, I will attempt to make the most of the leader's unique characteristics: traits, starting techs, unit, and building.

Put me down as another one for not regenerating the map.
