ALC Game 16: Persia/Cyrus

Well, he did update Princes today (by the way, everyone who plays civ should read that, it's excellent) so he'll likely get us next.

It's ok everyone, I'm back.

Sis has been waiting for my vital input before deciding how to proceed.

I'm about to send him a detailed analysis of the current game, plotting his every move carefully for the next 100 turns.

Once he's read my report he'll be posting the next update. :D

Maybe he died? Dos anyone have his personal contact info? We could be the only ones that know!

Thanks for mentioning this. The story so far is excellent. I now have another thread to check daily for updates.

Sisiutil: Hope all is well, don't let our devotion scare you off.

I appreciate the concern, but you're getting melodramatic. ;) I'm refreshing my memory by going through the posts from the last round now and I'll try to play the next round tonight. Don't know about posting it--it depends how long it takes.

Okay, I played the next round, but it's getting late and the dog needs to be walked, the laundry needs to be folded, the bed needs to be made... you get the picture. So I'll update tomorrow. (AHH!! The dreaded "t-word"!).

It was a fairly short round; as I'm still not confident in my ability to pull off a specialist economy, I want to play short rounds in order to solicit any required course corrections.

Good and good. I'm just itching to see Huyana destroyed. Fill his grave quickly so that I may dance over it. I want him dead! I want his family dead! I want his house burnt to the ground!:D

Are we agreed that Huayna and Monty are the most hated leaders?

I appreciate the concern, but you're getting melodramatic. ;)

Tch, we had to do something to entertain ourselves! Although, I'm thinking we need a photoshop contest with the theme being, "Define Tomorrow".

mansa is by far worse than huyana... monty is just nutty, not hated.

You know, I hated Huyana too till I played the Inca on the 18 civs earth map. I played and won a lot of games of civ but that was the most satisfying space win ever. Anyones who's tried it knows why. Check the map, then realize you can't get that copper, then look for the iron, the notice the mountains.

Builders delight, Only had archers and Quechlas till Gunpowder.

Sorry for the tread-jack

That's funny... I just watched The Untouchables (again) last week...

Yeah, I've really grown to hate Huyana recently. Monty is just crazy and he lives on borrowed time in almost all my games, but Huyana is more dangerous. He's a tech monster and a chronic builder, and he somehow still manages to stay ahead of everyone in power. The sooner Sisiutil makes a Persian rug out of him, the better I'll feel about this game.

Round 6 (at last!): 205 BC to 65 AD

As I said, a short round so if I'm really messing up the unfamiliar SE I can get kicked in my sorry butt.

I started the round by jacking up the research rate to 100% to use up all that lovely gold Huayna gave me. It cut the remaining research time of Currency in half, from 10 turns to 5, so it felt like the right thing to do.

A few turns into the round I got my first great person, a Great Scientist in the capital.

Yes, I used him for an Academy. He would have lightbulbed Compass, which is not really an optimal use for a GS unless winning the circumnavigation race is cruicial (which it rarely is). I could have kept him around to lightbulb Philosophy, but I needed two more techs for that (Meditation and Code of Laws), which would take several turns, especially since it turned out I had to research Monarchy on my own too. Besides, the next GS will appear in 22 turns or so, which I think is plenty of time to found Taoism. Having an Academy in a city running 4 scientists is pretty handy.

A turn later, I made use of the whip for some infrastructure:

I was quite proud of myself for waiting until exactly the right turn to get the maximum hammer overflow to the next build. Usually I muck that up.

My next tech was completed shortly thereafter:

Since I now had Currency and could trade items for gold, I decided to shop things around a little.

That deal did a lot to repair relations with Isabella. It moved her from Annoyed to Cautious, and on the next turn she was once again willing to open her borders (insert your own double entendre here). She also gave me a heckuva deal for one of my extra iron resources:

Genghis was also good for a trade or two:

I managed to research Meditation in one turn by maxing out the scientists I was running, then traded that to Genghis as well:

I think I made the right choice by finishing my research of Currency. The ability to trade gold got me more of it and has allowed me to keep the research slider maxed out, so between that and all the scientists I'm racing through techs at a good rate.

Speaking of which...

And I'll have a source of wine once Beijing's borders pop. I held off on switching to Hereditary Rule, however, since I'm not Spiritual. (Yes, I'm learning!) My next research target was Code of Laws, which would allow me to switch to Caste System. It made sense to wait until I could do a civics two-fer.

Huayna, however, had other ideas:

Well, I still haven't made up my mind who to attack next, so I'm generally trying to not tick anybody off. (Which is why I haven't adopted a religion yet.) And I was going to switch to HR anyway, so what the heck. I decided to delay Caste System for now... my power rating is falling, and I think I'm therefore going to need to whip several units soon.

I managed to found that double-gold city, as suggested.

This was especially pleasing because it's so rare for me to beat the AI to a desirable city site. I should, I suppose, consider revising my poor opinion of the Imperialistic trait.

In 20 AD I finished the next tech target:

Confucianism had already been founded somewhere else, however--likely on another continent out there somewhere, since I was the first on the my own land mass to get this tech. As I mentioned above, I haven't switched to Caste System. I'm reluctant to put down that whip just yet.

My next tech target was Metal Casting. Forges would probably be handy, and it's good trading fodder.

The treasury was beginning to empty again, and Huayna was flush with cash and pleased with me, so I decided to pay him a visit:

He fell for it! I mean, uh, what a nice guy!

Isabella, however, probably doesn't share my high opinion of the Ican, especially a couple of turns later:

Yep, Huayna declared war, not Izzy. Well, one of them was bound to do so inevitably. I'll bet Isabella is very glad we patched things up. If I recall correctly, I'm her only source of metal. Now if Huayna shows up and demands that I stop trading with her or join in the war on his side, what should I do?

Before the round ended, I made one more tech trade:

Yeah, he definitely got the better part of that deal, but really, everyone else but him has Alphabet. I might as well get something for it. This way I can sell him Literature when he has some more cash again.

So, not the most exciting round, I'll acknowledge, but many of you were suggesting to take a few turns to build and prepare, so that's what I did. I have an Axe and a Spear in my two border cities now, libraries just about everywhere, and lots of happy citizen thanks to the military police (another use for all those veteran Immortals) and those Calendar resources.

A state-of-the-world post will follow.

The State of the World, 65 AD

I'll start with a look at the map of the continent, with resource markers hidden to reduce the clutter:

That's not all the cities out there. What with all the OB agreements, I'm thinking I should send my Sentry-promoted Immortals out for a look-see to get the map properly updated.

I have a Settler and an Immortal in the midwestern wilderness:

I was thinking, as you can see, of claiming the last remaining ivory tile. A pity there's no food source there--unless I later raze that Incan city to its southwest, which is a likely possibility, since it's right on top of a copper resource. So I was thinking of founding the city on that coastal plains tile 1W of the Settler's current position. Or should I pull the Settler back and found the fish city--you know, the barbarian one I should have kept rather than razing?

My next Great Scientist is due in the capital in 9 turns:

Yes, I think he should definitely lightbulb Philosophy.

The Domestic Advisor:

Hmmm, I really think I should focus on building and whipping military units in the next round. Which city should be the Heroic Epic city? I usually like it to be coastal, but I only have one of those (Guangzhou) at the moment, and it's not the greatest production city around. In fact, because of its lack of fresh water and extant cottages, I've made it my second cottage city, after Goth.

Civics:

Changing to the high-maintenance OR civic doesn't make sense until I spread a religion around (hence the monastery getting built in Beijing, the only city thus far with any religion at all). And as I mentioned before, I think I need to whip several units before I'm ready to leave Slavery for CS. Thoughts?

Power:

Good thing Huayna decide to go after Isabella, eh? Like I said, I think I need to beef up my military, especially if I want to go after someone. Huayna is probably distracted and may have most of his forces deployed in the west against Spain. Time to sneak up and blindside him? Or take advantage of his preoccupation, which will likely guarantee I have a free hand with Genghis? Decisions, decisions...

Demographics:

Relations:

Technologies, compared to Genghis:

Compared to Isabella:

Hmmm, maybe I was wrong--did Isabella found Confucianism?

And compared to Huayna:

Yeah, I better get Construction next, after Metal Casting is done. In fact, I should have thought about MC more clearly--what the heck am I going to trade it for? Unless Izzy or Genghis also finish researching Construction very soon, not a lot! Live and learn...

Trade deals:

Yes, I'm kind of whoring myself out to everybody. I have no pride, but I've got a healthy bank statement!

So cover me with little square dents and maple syrup: I'm still waffling. Who to kill, that is the question. Huayna, who will face a two-front war? Or fenced-in Genghis, while converting to Hinduism to buddy up with Huayna? But isn't he darned likely to ask me to join him against Izzy? Which I could as a phony war for the diplomatic points. And how to best get in a position to launch said aggression? Stick with the whip? Or change to CS and get a tech advantage?

"did Isabella found Confucianism?" yes, i think the map shows toledo as the holy city. hint from the permanoob: hit F7 before bulbing philosophy if you're not sure whether taoism's been founded ;)

"Yeah, I better get Construction next, after Metal Casting is done. In fact, I should have thought about MC more clearly--what the heck am I going to trade it for? Unless Izzy or Genghis also finish researching Construction very soon, not a lot! Live and learn..."

well, you have gold, and it'll double those happy faces, mr. glass is half full :)

i'm still thinking but that's what i thought so far just looking at the map.

wow, all the religions so far have been founded on your continent. ouch for the other guys! i played a game recently where isabella and huayna were on a continent together and hogged all seven ... it was painful for the rest of us!!!

Yeah, Izzy founded Confucianism- in Toledo. I think it makes a lot of sense to flank Huayna, and, in doing so, befriend Izzy, then, once you get up in tech more, pull an about face and go after the cornered Genghis.
