Round 6 (at last!): 205 BC to 65 AD
As I said, a short round so if I'm really messing up the unfamiliar SE I can get kicked in my sorry butt.
I started the round by jacking up the research rate to 100% to use up all that lovely gold Huayna gave me. It cut the remaining research time of Currency in half, from 10 turns to 5, so it felt like the right thing to do.
A few turns into the round I got my first great person, a Great Scientist in the capital.
Yes, I used him for an Academy. He would have lightbulbed Compass, which is not really an optimal use for a GS unless winning the circumnavigation race is cruicial (which it rarely is). I could have kept him around to lightbulb Philosophy, but I needed two more techs for that (Meditation and Code of Laws), which would take several turns, especially since it turned out I had to research Monarchy on my own too. Besides, the next GS will appear in 22 turns or so, which I think is plenty of time to found Taoism. Having an Academy in a city running 4 scientists is pretty handy.
A turn later, I made use of the whip for some infrastructure:
I was quite proud of myself for waiting until exactly the right turn to get the maximum hammer overflow to the next build. Usually I muck that up.
My next tech was completed shortly thereafter:
Since I now had Currency and could trade items for gold, I decided to shop things around a little.
That deal did a lot to repair relations with Isabella. It moved her from Annoyed to Cautious, and on the next turn she was once again willing to open her borders (insert your own double entendre here). She also gave me a heckuva deal for one of my extra iron resources:
Genghis was also good for a trade or two:
I managed to research Meditation in one turn by maxing out the scientists I was running, then traded that to Genghis as well:
I think I made the right choice by finishing my research of Currency. The ability to trade gold got me more of it and has allowed me to keep the research slider maxed out, so between that and all the scientists I'm racing through techs at a good rate.
Speaking of which...
And I'll have a source of wine once Beijing's borders pop. I held off on switching to Hereditary Rule, however, since I'm not Spiritual. (Yes, I'm learning!) My next research target was Code of Laws, which would allow me to switch to Caste System. It made sense to wait until I could do a civics two-fer.
Huayna, however, had other ideas:
Well, I still haven't made up my mind who to attack next, so I'm generally trying to not tick anybody off. (Which is why I haven't adopted a religion yet.) And I was going to switch to HR anyway, so what the heck. I decided to delay Caste System for now... my power rating is falling, and I think I'm therefore going to need to whip several units soon.
I managed to found that double-gold city, as suggested.
This was especially pleasing because it's so rare for me to beat the AI to a desirable city site. I should, I suppose, consider revising my poor opinion of the Imperialistic trait.
In 20 AD I finished the next tech target:
Confucianism had already been founded somewhere else, however--likely on another continent out there somewhere, since I was the first on the my own land mass to get this tech. As I mentioned above, I haven't switched to Caste System. I'm reluctant to put down that whip just yet.
My next tech target was Metal Casting. Forges would probably be handy, and it's good trading fodder.
The treasury was beginning to empty again, and Huayna was flush with cash and pleased with me, so I decided to pay him a visit:
He fell for it! I mean, uh, what a nice guy!
Isabella, however, probably doesn't share my high opinion of the Ican, especially a couple of turns later:
Yep, Huayna declared war, not Izzy. Well, one of them was bound to do so inevitably. I'll bet Isabella is very glad we patched things up. If I recall correctly, I'm her only source of metal. Now if Huayna shows up and demands that I stop trading with her or join in the war on his side, what should I do?
Before the round ended, I made one more tech trade:
Yeah, he definitely got the better part of that deal, but really, everyone else but him has Alphabet. I might as well get something for it. This way I can sell him Literature when he has some more cash again.
So, not the most exciting round, I'll acknowledge, but many of you were suggesting to take a few turns to build and prepare, so that's what I did. I have an Axe and a Spear in my two border cities now, libraries just about everywhere, and lots of happy citizen thanks to the military police (another use for all those veteran Immortals) and those Calendar resources.
A state-of-the-world post will follow.
