Simple question: anyone know of research as to which image of Alexander the great, of those created, is closer to the reality?

Plutarch said statues of Alexander made by his personal sculptor, Lysippus were most like him. Though I think only Roman copies of his work exist.
 
Also, he probably kept his head on top of shoulders, rather than on a sort of pole thing. That would have made his job awfully difficult.

Why? If I were a Persian and I saw that the enemy army was being lead by one of those floating heads from Castlevania, I'd rout pretty fast.

That's a very good point. Perhaps his military genius was greater than we have yet realised.

Also, I believe it was mentioned that his hair was blonde ('fair'), so the first mosaic picturial would be less accurate in both instances. (Don't know about his eye colour though.)
 
It is said he had a brown and a blue eye.

Also, he was said to be shorter than all his generals, and of a ruddy complexion.
