Their out their somewhere, they might be single cell organisms, or they might have adavanced beyond human comprehension technologically. However I think aliens probably exist in some form somewhere.

However i dont believe we humans have seen UFO's or anything of the sort yet. Actually finding or seeing aliens, let alone communicating with them is probably close to impossible.

Even reporting "something strange" gets poeple into trouble.
Over the past 50+ years the entire spectrum of the media has labeled such poeple as crackpots or attention seekers. Many have later been found as such by investigation but there are always a few that are just unexplained. Unexplained does not mean otherworldly in origin, just unexplained. So with this stigma of insano-crackpot, poeple that see "wierd" things are very reluctant to come forward, atleast in the US. These poeple are subjects of great ridicule by even their closest family and friends. I found this out first hand. When I was 13 I was something wierd in my 6 inch refractor that I couldnt readily explain. It looked like a tiny golden trapezoid with a multicolored flame coming out the bottom. It could have been any number of things that my brain just grasped at to give form. It didnt move from the sky so I guess it may have just been a bright star that my telescope's optics had deformed. The next day when I told my friends that I had seen "something" I got instant and harsh ridicule. "You saw Santa Claus" was their responce between fits of laughter. It's just this sort of reaction that poeple face when they come forward, ostracizing them from main stream society. Ridicule that knows no bounds as I've read on this thread.

Why is it that there is a larger support and believability base whenever some nutball sees Jesus in his oatmeal than if he'd seen martians knocking on his window??

As for what do I believe? Oh, there is definately SOMETHING fishy going on.

500 years ago, all these people reporting contact with alien beings would have been claiming visitations by angels or the Virgin Mary. People have a deep need to be special in some way, the way that need is expressed depends on the times we live in. I believe that there is intelligent life out there, but people who believe that theyve come here have no grasp whatsoever of the distances involved.

Try thinking "out of the box"
Just because the GREAT AND MASTERFUL HUMAN RACE hasn't figured it out doesnt mean its not possible. Poeple once thought it was physcially impossible to do many things that are commonplace today.

Excuse me, but I LIVE outside of the box! I dont care how advanced a species is and what fanciful means of propulsion or "space folding" they use to get around. Any voyage to other star systems lightyears away would be a huge undertaking. ENORMOUS amounts of energy are required. IF you ever got to a system that could support your species, youd be there to stay, you wouldnt be making round trips.

If you live outside the box then why can't you just walk around it to get from one point to another? Or maybe even pick it up and rotate it in a way beneficial to you? Or even fold one end so it toaches another? Those inside the box won't mind because they don't have another vantage point to judge by. You're still thinking too conventionally.

This whole alien thing is pretty ******** and Area 51 does have some weird stuff happening, but it isn't UFOs.

It's been said that Area 51 is used for testing new and radical flight vehicles for the military. They look different and weird than regular airplanes so people think that they are from aliens. The government lets people carry on with this alien hoo-ha because it helps keep a nice cover on the stuff they are working on. They don't want other countries to know about our new stealth bombers and probably want them to think about the stupid alien stuff and dismiss it. :)

How much energy would be required to fold space? I have no idea, but I know it must be huge. In order to do this cheaply, the species would have to be so advanced that there would be nothing here to interest them in the first place. I grew up reading science fiction, practically breastfeeding with one hand and propping up a sci fi book with the other. Nobody would be happier than me if aliens arrived tommorow. I just dont think it'll ever happen because it requires too much energy and wouldnt be cost effective. Yes, I believe the aliens are capitalists:)

Depends on the aliens' lifespans. They could live for 10,000 of our years. Granted, it would still be a huge undertaking, but we could fly to another planet now if we had considerably longer lifespans.

Our short lives, I think, are the greatest obstacle in space exploration.

Thats a good point. I still think it isnt practical. If its so easy, where are they? Why would they have come all the way here? For what possible reason that would justify such a huge commitment.

Come on newfangle, Im just being a realist. I think it was in the crop circle thread that I compared interstellar travel to an ant crossing the Sahara Desert. Thats not accurate, the distances involved are actually whole orders of magnitude greater. Anybody who managed to cross such a distance would be staying and making themselves comfortable.

My only experience with aliens is with the illegal type. We have loads of them here in Texas. Damned nice people for the most part. Don't think any of them qualify as bodysnatchers, the occasional purse maybe, but not bodies.

aliens may and probably do exist. they certainly aren't here yet. if we do encounter them, it will probably be an unpleasant moment for both of us because we might have vastly different concepts of morality. what if they worship a type of mushroom, frequently engage in incest, and eat the fingers of their dead relatives to show their respect for the deceased? they would be outraged at our mushroom eating ways and we would be equally outraged by their actions. this could lead to all sorts of ridiculous violence based on incompatible belief systems like what we already have problems with on this planet.

Apparently the ammount of energy needed to power a "warp" drive would be a little more than we could muster.

I would cancel preparations for the soon-to-come alien visit ;)
THATS what Im talking about, thanks for the link Aphex. Doesnt matter how advanced they are, they cant beat physics. Theyre out there all right, but thats where theyre staying.

omichron, they might not even have a concept of morality. But theyd definitely understand a basic cost/benefit analysis.

Do the same rules apply to 4th dimensional space? This of cource is only conjecture, I like to keep an open mind.

Hell, some "abductee" reports have have aliens walking through walls, so you never know when the laws of physics can just be side-stepped.

4th dimensional space? Walking through walls? That would take us out of physics and into metaphysics. Might as well say: Maybe the aliens were carried here by Quetzalcoatl the Feathered Serpent, this is only conjecture, I like to keep an open mind:lol:
