All Quiet on the Civ Front

I agree that Civ6's Monty is horribly designed: what the crap is going on with those feathers? Did the designers never look at a single Aztec codex or painting?

A little late here but I just had to say that it's probably the same reason that the Mayans in Apocalypto did so many human sacrifices and encountered the conquistadors 600 years earlier than they should have. Many people think that these different Mesoamerican groups were all the same in wearing extravagant feather crowns, etc. I would hope that Montezuma would get an even bigger visual update than Teddy or Seondeok but that seems unlikely.

On the more positive side, I'm glad to hear that we've got some vague but exciting news. It could be the next expansion but I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's the dlc we get inbetween!

There's a new unknown DLC app. The one for R&F appeared in May 2017, to give you a sense of how far ahead we may need to look. Assuming it's an expansion and not a regular DLC. No depots yet.

This is really a good news. I am already enthusiastic. I hope that we get more some indications very soon.

Indeed. If he were Maya he'd still be decidedly in the realm of fantasy, but at least grounded on how the Maya portrayed themselves (or at least their gods). Or maybe Firaxis can't tell the difference between Quetzalcoatl and Montezuma. :p

Honestly he needs to be completely redone from the ground up, but that's not going to happen. I like his tattoos and pectoral, though.

I hope we all realise, that Firaxis is trolling us with this very vague crumb. They know, that a few VERY dedicated members, follow there every move, and would be all over this. They probably could have found a way to hide it, but they like us to have some fun. I can just see them looking at these very forums, seeing what great ideas we come up with.

June birthdays are best. :p Mine is 24th.

Hey, that's the day they expected me to be born.

(and then my brother broke his leg two weeks before so my mother was hauling him all over the place while being pregnant for 8.5 months)

If the game doesn’t come out until February next year it’s going to be a long wait. If it’s June next year, it’s going to be interminable.

I mean, it’s not unreasonable for FXS to take 12-18 months for the next expansion. And frankly I don’t want them to rush it out.

But. I haven’t really enjoyed playing since RnF. I think I’d rather not pick up something else before the next expansion - I don’t have much time for video games as it is. I don’t particular see the point in buying and playing previous versions. And I’m having some fun modding, but don’t really want to go crazy with that given the next expansion might fix a lot of things anyway.

So... I guess I’ll just do other stuff...?

Unfortunately, that's always going to be the situation when a game is still in development. I'm always having to go back and add/delete/modify parts of my mods when there's an update. The benefit though, is it furthers my knowledge of how the game's coded and how to manipulate it through modding. So there's definitely a great benefit to "going crazy" with your modding regardless of how future updates alter things.

Just a thought, over the past several months I've seen that you've had some really intriguing ideas for changing the base game. It'd be interesting to see how some of them would work in practice if you could mod them in. Obviously some would be difficult, if not impossible, but there's been several that could be done fairly simply.

All good points. And thanks for the kind words.

I am indeed working on some mods based on my posts and a few others. As a first step, I’m trying to make some mods around the post on Industrial Zones and tier 3 buildings. Amongst other things, and with a lot of help from these forums, I recently managed to get my factories and powerplants to give housing as part of their regional effect, and was quite proud of myself. If I get something into an okay state, I’ll post things here.

Sadly, I’m really very time poor. So this stuff takes me ages. To me though the real value of modding isn’t to make the game better or anything like that. I just like getting my brain to do something different and like to understand how things work.

Historical accuracy aside, Monty in Civ 5 was absolutely terrifying. Monty in Civ 6, on the other hand, looks like a wimpy old man yelling at the neighborhood kids to get off his lawn.

Monty's armies in Civ 6 should be terrifying, and be more than enough to kick the neighbourhood kids off his lawn and yours. Too bad they aren't wielded that way by the AI, or you'd be desperately trying to get 2 of every Luxury so you could make sure to send one to Monty.

My big issue with the depiction of Montezuma I in Civ 6 (it was Monty II in Civ 5) is the way he carries himself. He has the bearing of a loner, not a leader. If you told me this was Monty's representative from the Aztec empire, I'd believe you. But this is the Emperor himself, a leader of men and women, an accomplished politician and diplomat? Nah, I don't buy it.

It is just a different intrepretation. It's not like we know much about his personality. Yeah, he was a leader/warrior/etc. but maybe it's lonely at the top.

Civ 6 Monty did kill me once, pre RnF, early game, when I still didn't have the right reflexes. He was right next to me, met him first, no delegation, because who sends them, there was an Eagle on my border ~t20, a second one a few turns later, then after a few more turns - the third one, fourth and somewhere around t50 I was no more.

But since then I learned he's one of the easiest to befriend. An immediate delegation and having no luxuries or sharing the same luxuries early game is fast track to friendship, which is likely to be eternal or at least long enough to save you from the initial Eagle rush. And then he becomes very easy, barely an inconvenience, like the rest of them.

On the whole, both Montys - Civ 5&6 rather remind me of Porgs - feathery and soft :)
If you're looking for a "Wookie who just lost a game of space chess" Monty, go back to Civ 4. Then you'll truly know what is fear.

So next expansion Spring/Summer 2019?

Guess as to next patch? Maybe another end of October one for the '2 year' anniversary?

FXS_Sarah liked your post! They are watching...they are waiting...they are everywhere :shifty:

Good catch.

This kind of stuff is also why I am convinced that the no communication policy is dictated from higher up (most likely 2k) and not necessarily what Firaxis wants.
