What's the other trait? Commercial has less gold corruption, Industrious has less shield corruption, and Seafaring has less corruption in coastal cities. Religious makes temples and cathedrals cheaper, along with religious wonders, which makes those builds faster. I don't think the religious trait lessens corruption.
My .02 is that I am not found of religious trait. It is not one of the better ones. It is not horrible, but cheaper temples is not a big deal and I do not build cathedrals anyway.
Lower anarchy, saves a few turns, but I do not intend to switch more than once.

Which is why I rarely play as the Arabs, as Religious and Expansionist are two of the 4 weakest traits. Seafaring and Militaristic are the other weaker traits.
I'd rate the traits 1. Agricultural, 2. Commercial, 3. Industrious, 4. Scientific,
5. Militaristic, 6. Religious, 7. Expansionist, and 8. Seafaring. Others might shuffle the order a bit, but that's my take on the traits.
I've had some good games as Religious ... in fact some of my better games. I find Commercial a bit weak. I can never get the Romans off the ground and they rarely perform well in my games. But the Celts are are consistently good performer, as are the Iroquois. The Maya are reckoned to be evil beyond belief with Agri/Indust, and they are lethal. I dont see Religious affecting waste though, it might be Temples making people happy and so getting WLTK, which defeats wastes I think.
