AM10- Race to the New World

Call that a no then????

Looks like this thread is pretty dead then...

Earth to SGers?

Everyone busy with GOTM?

Consider this a "got it" then.

Should post a game report Friday evening GMT.

Okay, I took some time off work, and got things started a little earlier than planned, we need some momentum going in this SG! :)

First of all I am gonna play 15 turns as stated before by amrisan, next player gets 10.

Initial observations on opening the save:
-We are already SERIOUSLY boxed in. I though we were planning on reducing the number of civs starting in Europe a bit???
-Only second city opportunities at the moment appear to be Northern Italy (but Rome’ll probably get there first) NE France (modern day Britanny), or modern day Belgium type area.
-Vikings definitely look like the best bet for an early strike, but I’d also be tempted to try to take out Rome pretty soon to establish us on the continent. (let’s hope they don’t have iron J)

Objectives having glanced at the save:
-get second city established in nice location
-get iron and/or horses linked up for early assault on Vikings.
-Maintain a constant view on trading opps

Turn 1 - 2850BC:
-Irrigation of wheat complete, now growth in 2, settler in 4, worker roads
-No trading opps.

Turn 2 – 2800BC:
-Zzzzzzzzzz

Turn 3 – 2750BC:
-Paris to grow in 2, settler in 1, so micromanage for better gold output for 1 turn.
-Worker completes road and moves to cows to irrigate (2nd city can use this if place in Belgium)

Turn 4 – 2710BC:
-Settler produced, Paris set to another settler, growth in 1, settler in 4
-I decide to go for Belgium, and settler heads that way.

Turn 5 – 2670BC:
-Greeks move to block settler progress (I want to found the city by the coast)
-Japan has Iron Working, they want all our treasury (143 gold) and 1gpt for a deal – refused. Ahh, so do Rome, I really hope they don’t have a source of Iron close by…

Turn 6 – 2630BC
-Settler moved into position
-Germany also have Iron Working now, best deal is still to expensive

Turn 7 – 2590BC
-Paris produces another Settler. Micromanage and set production to worker.
-Orleans founded, production to warrior.
-Decide to take a bit of a risk and send second settler south towards northen Italy to try and grab it before the Vikings or Romans
-Russians contacted, they have 2 cities, Iron working, and 18g

Turn 8 – 2550BC
-Greeks settle in Northern Italy IBT
-Settler heads west towards Britanny

Turn 9 – 2510BC
-Paris builds worker and is set to settler. Growth in 2, settler in 5, perfect for a 4 turn factory, but space is running out already!

Turn 10 – 2470BC
-Settler moves into position

Turn 11 – 2430BC
-Orleans builds warrior, production to archer (horsie prebuild)
-Lyons founded, production also to archer

Turn 12 – 2390BC
-Mongol worker appear in Macedonia IBT
-Mongols contacted, they have 2 cities, have 57 gold, and are up HBR, Mathematics and Iron Working (our 40 turn gambit looks to have failed).
-Scandinavia now has Writing, contact with Egypt and Babylon, IW, and HBR, they won’t sell writing for love nor money!
-I buy HBR from Germany for 90g and 1gpt (hopefully it’ll dissuade him from attacking)
-Contact with the Mongols to Scandinavia for contact with Babylon and 14g (hoarding contact with the English for now)
-Damn… Babylon doesn’t have writing

Turn 13 – 2350BC
-IBT Horsies connected, Germans start the Oracle.
-Prebuilds changed to horsemen
-Settler completed in Paris
-Everyone has traded for writing and is up on us by IW, loads of contacts, and Writing
-Contact with the Ottomans from the Babs for 13 gold
-Alphabet and Mysticism to the Ottomans for IW and 6 gold.
-Remaining contacts from the Russians for 60 gold
-HBR to China for 60 gold
-Contact with the Zulu from the Scandinavians for 35g
-HBR and 25g to the Zulu for IW
-Contact with the Zulu to Greece for 20g
-Contact with the Zulu to Babs for 16g
-Contact with the Zulu to Russia for 15g
-Alphabet to the Otttomans for 6g
-Phew!
-Amirsan, you said to keep Paris at size 4-5, but there isn’t much point as we’ve pretty much run out of room to expand into, I’ll leave it building a settler for now, but the next player may want to veto that. We could found more cities beyond the current borders of neighbouring civs, but we’ll need an ROP I’d imagine
-Science research into Maths turned off.
-Settler heads towards modern day Copenhagen area.

Turn 14 – 2310BC
-Consider taking out the 2 wandering Mongol workers (what are they doing there anyway are they slaves from a battle vs a settler?)
-Writing from the Japanese for all our contacts, HBR and 10g
-Research set to Polynethism at 10% (we’re unlikely to succeed in any 40 turn gambits, but it’s worth a try… maybe)
-Writing to the Zulu for 27g
-Contact with Ottomans and Indians to Egypt for 19g

Turn 15 – 2270BC
-IBT English start the Colossus (it’d be nice if they build it, so we can capture it!)
-Worker roads wines

That’s all folks.

Save is here:

Notes for the next player:
-Keep bashing out horsies, then assault Bergen, and hopefully the Scandinavian capital too.
-It’s up to you whether you think it’s worth continuing to produce settlers in Paris
-Keep an eye on any good trading opportunities (I didn’t have much luck in mine). The next biggie will be when map making comes up (5-8 turns?)
-The settler is headed towards modern day Copenhagen on the peninsula.
-We have no iron within our borders as yet!
-We only have access to 1 lux at present, we could get hold of some furs if we decide to attack Germany instead, but remember that we have 17 turns left on a 1gpt deal with them.

I’ll post some pics later.

Here's the current status:

Ooops, my spell checker changed "amirsan" to "American"...

*cough* Tao will not play this SG because of this:

I think we could get one more to the roster

I would be up to play, that is if you would take me. I have a Deity win under my belt but I'm not up to the standard of you guys. I think I would learn a lot from it.

Good set of turns Ville! :)
I take it as we are racing to the East we want to be the first civ to learn Map Making and maybe build the GL?
Is there any more room to expand on the home continent? If not should we try and go for an early war?
When am I up?

I'm at work now, so can't remember the exact details, but my comments on viewing the save are as follows:

1) The city in Denmark is in the middle of a serious culture clash with the Civ in Scandinavia. we'll need to rush a temple (and possibly a library) there as soon as we move to either Monarchy or Republic.
2) With Scandinavian settler/defender pairs wandering through our territory on a regular basis, we may decide to either poach a few slaves, or kick them out prior to declaring war.
2) I reckon we'll need at least 5 horsies and 1 spearman to guarantee sucessfully take Bergen (I imagine they'll have 2 spearmen and possibly 1 archer garissoned). More can be on the way for the continued assault of the Vikings.
3) We'll need to watch out if the Vikings have techs ahead of us and others, or if they have a lot of cash before we declare war. We don't want a 2 front war right at the moment. Should we perhaps sign some more deals with Germany to make sure they don't attack... I doubt they'd be much help in a war unless we give them an ROP, and even then... they might capture some of the cities we want.
4) It'd be great if we could kick Scandinavia out of mainland Europe, then they'll be very unlikely to culture flip us, and they'll no longer really be a force in the game (I suspect however that they will have some African colonies, or island cities in the Baleriacs by the time we attack, so we won't be able to wipe them out in 1 go.

Oh, and welcome Civmania....

regarding your comments:

It'll be impossible to be the first to mapmaking from this point. I'm expecting one of our rivals to discover it at any moment, writing has been around for a while now. SinisterDeath, you should keep a close eye on this during your turns, map trading can be very profitable if you get it right.

On expansion locally, I doubt it's worth it, all the tiles within 20-30 moves of the capital are already taken, and the further away juicy ones will probably also be snapped up by the time we get there (also invovles signing loads of ROPs, which we'd probably have to pay for anyway).

As for the GL, I doubt we'll get this either, and I'd rather concentrate on building up an assault force to secure iron, bash up the Vikings, and then take on the Germans. We should, however, have a good chance of capturing at least one of the early wonders from one of the other civs in Europe once we've become a military power.

However, as mentioned in an earlier post by Amirsan, we should definately try at least one suicide galley to attempt to get an early colony up and running in N. America (and possibly build the FP there brick by brick?)

Any thoughts from anyone else?

Go for it SinisterDeath.
