1786: Maryland and Virginia’s territorial dispute over the Potomac basic leads to violence and fighting. The Confederation called for a meeting in Baltimore. James Madison and Alexander Hamilton went in, planning to actually scrap the articles of Confederation to create a new, powerful central government, as well as to solve the Potomac question. However, the delegates opposed them at nearly every turn, and soon, it seemed it was every state for itself. Northern states called for the end of slavery, the southerns called for no laws to be allowed on the issue of ending it. Big states wanted more say in the government. Small states wanted an equal say. All these conflicts caused very few delegates to sign the revised constitution. The total collapse of the Baltimore convention and the inability to deal with the problem in particular leads to its collapse as an organization. The colonies become separate nations.
