The discussion would be a lot more interesting if people in the US didn't comment.

I know - because all of their valid points keep screwing up the stupid argument that Americans shouldn't be in the game.

Thanks for you genius comment! Perhaps you should follow your own advice and spare us your inane comments...

I think Americans should be in the Civ games, as long as their leader's personality is Cretinous and Inbred and their special unit is the Burger Bar, a unit that inflicts obesity on the world (ie slows enemy movements and city growth)

Trolling at its finest! :goodjob:

What's trolling? And how does it differ from being sarcastic?

MODERATORS. Where the hell are you? I think this thread has gone on for long enough and it is time to shut it down.

Why do I have to do your job?

It is much the same, sarcasm is lost on these forums...

Most users tend to lose their sense of humour once they log on...funny how citizens of a democracy are so intolerant of free speech when it's used to the maximum effect!

True, but I think you are confusing disagreement with intolerance they are not the same. While I may dissagree with someone I am still tolerant of thier views. I don't think many have a sense of humour on this forum, as these sort of discussions bring out strong emotions. My humour thread got deleted as the spam it was :(

I don't think I am…I've read many times on here the phrase "you can't say that" or a similar sentiment that's a gut reaction to a comment. Disagreement when it happens on here (like now) involves arguments etc. Intolerance is the "you can't say that" crowd…the religious right, middle America, those sort of people that currently fly against Darwin's theory

It's not like this thread was started as a rational discussion of why America was included in the game as a civilization. It really only exists as a means for people who dislike the United States to post their thoughts on that subject.

The game was made in the United States by Americans, who chose to include their own, not-insubstantial-in-terms-of-contributions-to-world-history, country as a playable civilization.

If you resent the role of the United States in the world today, and as a result, the inclusion of America as a civilization offends you in some way, then buy turn-based civ-building computer games produced in your own country.

Or you can always mod them out of this game-- the developers have given you the tools to do precisely that! Unfortunately, you're still contributing money to a US-based business-- so if you have a problem with that, I don't know what to tell you.

Making a bold statement, every country is ruled by the elite... And thank heaven this is the case. Why? Because INDIVIDUALS are CLEVER, but POPULATIONS include the lowest common denominator and as such are susceptable to rumor and impulse. Every country has its share of intolerant groups or left, right, religious, or what ever. Look at the North African riots in france, or the right wing groups in northern europe, or the resurgence of neo-nazis in Eastern Europe... What is the link of all these groups? Ignorance. Thank god that countries are ruled by the powerful minority. I would rather have policy directed by a greedy self-serving administration than a political leader who claims to want equality (look at Iran's new president) Why would I prefer this? Well, greedy self-serving leaders don't want to lose their grip, so they tend to be more stable and life stays at status quo without all the uncertainity.

(edit-risk vs reward, progressive vs. traditional)

while i was quilty of some usa bashing during this post (wasnt very nice of me) i didnt quit expect that some american citizens where so offended by this topic and feel the need to defend their beloved country.
some of my favortite replys (all quotes)

--Because the Americans are a great civilization. That's the only answer you need. They're new, yes, but they are one of the world's greatest civilizations.

Take India, for example. Does India really warrant inclusion in the game? They're a 2nd-rate Civilization, far less important than the Americans.

Or take the French. Well, I guess they contributed a lot a few hundred years ago. Truth be told, there have only been two or three truly great civilizations in history - the Romans, the Greeks and the Chinese.

America definitely ranks though. We're new to the Civilization scene, but we mastered it.---

--And historically the most advanced nations in the world have always felt that they were the center of the universe. The Romans, the Brits in the 1700's. The Greeks. It's a natural feeling in that I'm American and no other country really matters to me. Or, to sound more caring, my feeling on the USA will always come before my feelings for, say, the Ukraine, or wherever else you might think of.--

--As I mentioned in a different thread, since this has been argued to death, my default response is:

"Because we're better than you, that's why"--

this post was why the usa is in a computer game...not all promote the usa in the most childish ways.
why do all these ppl feel the need to "protect" their country and try to prove their superior? (and only making it worse by trying)
how can i do anything else but find u arogant if u describe the indian ppl as a "second hand civ" compared to the usa or simply say (or imply) americans are just better.
note that these replys are only from the last page...theres a lot more comments like that in the other pages but i didnt bother copy/paste em.

but i quess this forum isnt exactly the place for inter culturale debate (what a surprise :) )

However, I think that since this has been down multiple times the level of the arguements have fallen. Why post a long response when you have done it X times before... I think this sort of resignation is a result of the number of times it has been done. I really wish the search was enabled, then you would understand why...

Well, according to the history books, America's own contribution to world history BEFORE 1917 (when they got off their collective arses and help in a World War) amounted to nothing more than the genoicide of many Indian tribes and the export of luxuires and raw materials to Europe. End of list of contributions. AFTER 1917 is another matter altogether…

My point is that arguably until 17-wahtever is what, America as a nation didn't exist. Then it spent the following 140(?) years ignoring the world pretty much as it did before. So the question follows that what is an introspective baby nation doing in game that spans 6000 years?

IMHO I don't think the American nation has been "tested" if that's the word to prove that is has the strength and endurance of many of the other nations. As we speak, America is still crumbling under awful race relations, poverty gap, a corrupt poilitical establishment with a complicit, dumb-downed mass media. To be blunt, America won't fall because of an outside emeny, but because it's own internal problems will kill it.

How's that for serious?

LOL! America is not only in the game! We make other civs reinvent our OWN culture. And this is GREAT! Modern American culture is the best culture of the world.
Take the modern CIV Wounders:
-West Point: Hardly anybody in the rest of the world knows it, but hey - teach them our history!!! :)
-Pentagon (and most modern unit icons): We dominate the world with our great army! Even Cesar has to use american stealth bombers if he wants to win the game!! :)
- Wall Street: America can buy the world. Our stock market is the worlds most important!
- Manhattan Project and Apollo! Yes!! Our biggest achievements! The A-bomb and rockets. We made this! (With a little help of german scientists) :)
- Rock'n Roll, Broadway and Hollywood: Okay it is KITSCHI! But it's extraordinary american!! I'm proud, really this is in the game!
-The Statue of liberty: Thank you France!!!
- Mount Rushmoore: 6% of our own population knows, what US Presidents are imaged there - hope the mount rushmoore wounder will help to educate them!!
- The Internet. A wounderful instrument for the CIA to hidden control other nations :)
I'm so disappointed you can't build a "death penalty wounder" in the game. Every civilized nation should have this!
