Well, I've heard rumors of the past, but unfortunately, the archives don't go back so far as to see the NESes which were less stat based, and more story based.
Everything in NESes are about stats, and who wins. People don't play the games just for fun, this is why I propose to return to our roots, and make oncemore, the true never-ending story.
At an old Historical Role-playing forum that I used to frequent, and everything was alot simpler than NES, (well everything except the huge and historical military stats that players found for themselves or copy and pasted from an older thread) Players decided the outcomes of battles themselves, and battles were likely to end up as large, multi part stories in which players would plot out their tactics, and their opponents would react to them, posting their own part and in the end, seeing who wins. In the end, everything was posted and resolved in the thread, even 'secret diplo' and it was up to the players to be mature enough to respect the secret tags.
There would be no turns, it would be in real-time. 1 Day in RL could mean 1 month, or 1 week.
Things were alot less structured, but they were also as fun, if not more, than any of today's NESes, where one constantly worries about stats, about behind the scenes intrigue, and where some worry about only winning.
Which is why I am thinking about adopting this to our own forums. Granted, I have NO idea what the old NESes were like, but I'd imagine this would be something like them....
Firstly, there would be no moderator, no turns. A person would simply open the NES, list the nations available in the opening post, join up as a nation, and begin playing.
There would be no updates. Everything was done in real time, 1 day in real life equated to however many days the thread has agreed upon.
For Historical NESes, players would craft their own stats (army stats, there are no economic stats), and post them, and if they are not overbloated and exaggerated, all would be well. Stat tweaks will be allowed overtime due to minor troop increases or reorganization of your armies. For all stat tweaks you will repost your stat in a new reply.
For wars, players would decide the outcome by themselves, and would order all troop movements in the thread. Generals in real life had a general idea of where the enemy was coming from. Opponents would meet eachother in the decided area of where the two armies meet, and would begin their battle.
Battles would be played out like stories between the two persons. One player would post their movements, then their opponent posts, in the end, one player wins the battle.
The emphasis would be on stories, and all diplo would be carried out on the thread, even secret dipolmacy...
Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?
