Something may or may not come of this, but I'd like to post some more whif potential units. Such as my modern Roman and Spartan. What I would like is some creative criticism on colors, equipment, traditions etc that could be brought over from antiquity and put into a modern context.
here's some of my stuff that may or may not become units, humans afterall are very hard.

If you look closeley, I put the Spartan Alpha crest on the shoulders, and added a modern Greek sergeants rank on the arm. For the roman I put the rank of an Itallian master corporal on the forearm guards. Rank was a bit different in roman armies, I didn't want to put a massive Centurion's crest going sideways on the helmet, just yet anyway.

Please keep your "oh neato!" comments to a min. What I'd really like to hear is again, learned discussion on what I could add.

That would be a good idea, maybe having a semi-transparent roman-like model on them? (don't know if this is possible). By the way, the ceremonial armor looks most roman to me. :)

Well, here's my "oh neato!" comment. Now for some ideas:

Spartans:

Spartans famously wear capes. I know first hand that they can be b*****s to animate (it's what's stopping me releasing my Diomedes...), but it would complete the Spartan "look". It should at least be a though for the Ceremonial Spartan ;)

Also, I don't know how you made the hair, but it looks cool. Maybe you could make it a tad bit longer? The Spartans were famous for their "unusually" long-hair, too.

Finally, the Spartans should have some form of close-combat weapon on them to distinguish themselves from the long-range "cowards" (unless that's a knife I see in the bottom-left corner of the back shot ;)). I was thinking to myself the other day, actually, just how much the Spartans would diasaprove of modern warfare, with both sides firing at each other from "safe" ranges, like "women", and cowards dropping bombs from high "safe" distances... But that story isn't for here ;)

Hope that helps. :)

I agree with Virote. All the pics I have seen show Spartan's wearing capes.

How about a transparent shield on their second hand?

Again I concur. Maybe take the Riot Police's shield and re color it?

Yes I had been toying with the idea of a cape, but it's impossible for me to animate it in Bryce. The only cape model I have is a single piece.

I did add a hoplite sword and blued the metal. A cape would come in handy actually when not fighting. You can curl up in it to keep warm, and if it has special heat absorbing fibers woven into it, you can resonable hide yourself from IR scans. Or atleast minimize your presence.

Nice. What rank is the unit (Spartan)? If he is a high rank, is there any way you could change the thing on the top of the helmet (the name's escaped me...) about 90 degrees, so that it is facing "sideways"? This was also quite characteristic of Spartan officers.

Again,just throwing ideas out ;)

It's called a crest. But most were the traditional, rather than across the helmet.

While I like the way the crest looks on the spartan's combat helmet, I think you should reserve it for the parade uniform and replace it with something less ceremonial. In a combat situation, that crest would stick out like a sore thumb and make that brave spartan grunt a prime target.

i think, adding an sword bayonet to his gun would be more realistic than giving the spartan a weapon in both hands.

i wouldn't add the shield.

the bulletproof vest on chest and back could be shaped more like the body underneath. (sorry, english is not my first language) i mean, the armour fitted its owners body, you know what i mean. and the vest larger, not just a plate in front of his chest. perhaps you can drop than some of the armour at the arms.

and the capes weren't used in combat, so perhaps that's for ceremonial.

and for (ceremonial) i would take a look to the dress of modern indian/pakistani soldiers.

the roman is good as it is..

I've also got more 19th century stuff too. I used a french cuirassier as a base for this. I changed his helmet from the original, and added thigh, shin, toe guards. I also had to fatten his scabbard to use my roman officer's massive sword.

I like the designs you made, but there is one thing bothering me, regarding
equipment, traditions etc that could be brought over from antiquity
No modern infantry in the world looks like their soldiers 2k years ago and no modern army uses body armour. Why should romans do that, if their empire hadn't ceased to exist?
Don't get me wrong, they are absolutely cool, but no army would carry such uniforms into battle, especially the crest on the helmet.

That's an easy question to answer: Take one look at the pictures, does it LOOK roman to you?

i agree. perhaps the crest could be reduced to markings on the helmet.

wyrm, can you take the armour of the line infantry and put it on the first spartan, and change the armours colour to that dark green armour plates he wears? i don't know if it's possible

wyrmshadow: dare i be as bold as to suggest, but a cloak made from a multitude of small metaballs may be a viable option?
