Just like in every art, there's a load of junk in Anime, but likewise, there are gems as well. Of my current favorites are the works of Hayao Mayazaki:
Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, and
My Neighbor Totoro. I highly reccomend these.
Akira is indeed a classic, although I'll agree the story was a bit convoluted. Fortunately, I had already read the magna series before I saw the movie, so I was able to keep up with it.
@cgannon64: Did you happen to see the Cowboy Bebop Movie? I've never seen the show (no TV), but I thought the movie was pretty cool.
