Anime: Another Thread

Just bought the DVD set for Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Gonna watch this weekend! :D

Had watched it during university, but only caught the last 2/3... It was one of the anime that set off my great obsession with anime and manga. :)

Man, I loved that series. Like you, I haven't seen it since it ran about twenty years ago. Just out of curiousity, have you (or anyone for that matter) seen Macross? I never have, and wonder if it's worth the effort to track down a copy.

Just like in every art, there's a load of junk in Anime, but likewise, there are gems as well. Of my current favorites are the works of Hayao Mayazaki: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro. I highly reccomend these.

Akira is indeed a classic, although I'll agree the story was a bit convoluted. Fortunately, I had already read the magna series before I saw the movie, so I was able to keep up with it.

@cgannon64: Did you happen to see the Cowboy Bebop Movie? I've never seen the show (no TV), but I thought the movie was pretty cool.

Does Mysterious Cities of Gold come under 'anime'. If it does, then I like it. If it doesn't then I'm unfamiliar with it. Apart from Astro Boy, if that counts. Ack.

Cities of Gold was one of the first anime shown here in the west.

Astro boy is laudable due to it's suberb technology art, and funny racial stereotypes.

Anime covers a huge array of styles and types.
There is a anime/manga to suit all, IMHO...

Of course! I saw it on opening day at an indie-type theatre in the Willage, the only one showing it. I agree it was a great movie, and I'm going to get it on DVD whenever its availible.

There was a strange woman taking pictures of every person going to see the Cowboy Bebop Movie there. :hmm: I wouldn't be surprised if you can find a picture of myself and my brother on someone's homepage or some obscure anime forum...:p

EDIT: My mom feel asleep during Akira. She says violence makes her sleepy. She didn't last past the first couple of scenes, with the bikers and the student protestors. ;)
