Annoying CS's

does anyone else either drastically subtract the number of CS in game, or take them out completely? When i play on large or huge map I tend to go down anywhere from 3-6 city states. I find them basically useless, and quite impeding on game-play, especially when you get notifications from each on EVERY SINGLE TURN. Yea you can send great merchants and get tons of money sometimes, but i feel like the cons outweigh the pros. I think the game has something like 24 for a huge map, which i find ridiculous.

I think you're missing one the best mechanics of the Civ V. City state allies are awesome, with a little gold investment you can get a ton of early culture or food, or some nice units. Max out Patronage and you'll get Great People and a bunch of research as well.

Or if they annoy you, take them over. They usually settle near 1 Strategic and 1 Luxury resource and often near Natural Wonders. Take it and you have a great City in a prime spot.

They're really fun, you should learn how to use them effectively in the Strategy section, not turn them off. Further, you really cripple Greece and Siam if you unbalance or remove the CS, so consider the larger game competitive balance very carefully before you turn off CS, or Barbs, or anything else.

City States are and always have been one of the big plus points of Civ V. They actually add a dimension to diplomacy that has been missing in previous versions. They give good bonuses and are overall quite useful.

I do the same thing. I cut city states to half or fewer the default level. I can't stand the constant spam when it doesn't matter. Please destroy some barbarians!!! Um, I don't care about barbarians after the first 100 turns, I have actual civilizations to fight against!

City states are one of the poorer implemented systems imo.

The only thing I find annoying about CSs is that if you don't have some level of influence over them within 30-50 turns of meeting them, they will want you to conquer another CS. I would like to see the CSs ask for a wide range of things BEFORE you have become their friend or ally, maybe even allowing them to have disputes with other civs.

I have seen CSs declare perma-war on other civs in the game and never ask for help in defeating them.

After building the GL to get into medieval age i buy up 2 quick cultural CS if i can. The +12 culture per CS in early game greatly speeds up the early SP advancement.

Though i agree, i find they're just annoying for the most part.

I thinx the most anoying part is the bad placement i once got my citie in the middle of 7 citie state I had no room to expand...

This happened a lot of times

I allways put less citie states so i have more room......

I like the citie state mechanic they are just sometimes bad placed

I agree completely... I've had a lot of fun with CS.

I always enjoy watching 2 CS really having a go at each other... had 2 a couple of games back that were at it for about 250 turns! Very entertaining...

However, they are really useful, especially if you are playing Siam or Greece... and if these 2 are in the game, you should not cut the number of CSs. Same as if Askia and/or Germany are in the game, you shouldn't go with no barbarians.

I used to turn them off too, but the City State Diplomacy mod makes things a lot more interesting - try it!

Yeah I reduce their no. & increase no. of players instead. So for example I have like 14 civs & 16 CS. The reason is that if they are too many then they get most of the natural wonders + I like more action in my game, more no. of civs makes game more interesting.

Buy the new Explorers map pack and play on Continents Plus or Pangaea Plus.
They put city states on island chains further away from civs.
They are still there, just out of the way.

I cannot stand it when there are many CS's and then I find Caesar somewhere. It usually leads to him cornering enough to get his Diplo victory.

Anyway.....taking three trains, a plane and spending a day on a bus to get back on topic and away from...whatever that ramble was...

City States can be extremely powerful in game play, but they whine too much. Quite frankly Civ shouldn't be a mission based game and I feel that CS's turn it into that too much. Go do X and we'll give you Y but you might anger Z.

I tend to play with the defaults even so, but only because I play a largely military game and therefore find it useful to have pre-built cities to expand my empire without having to embark on a full scale war handy from time to time.

CS's are among the best innovations of ciV, together with no stacking and hexagons. I'm guessing you (OP) don't use them enough yet. There's so much more than just the trade missions you mention.

Having said that, I recognize the little annoyances, such as a load of spam about who's DoW-ing who which looks like a world war is breaking out, while there's but a small shift in alliances. Plus their placement seems a little off sometimes (4 CS's on an continent with no civs)

Ceterum censeo: I'd advise against discussing jews/Israel/the middle east here ... it's a one way track towards having this thread closed down soon

It is amazing how different the opinions and play styles are, and yet we all play and enjoy (and win) the same game.
I for one count CS among the worst innovations of civV, however no stacking and hexagons are truly amazing... :)

I'm not impressed with CS's. The interaction with them is shallow, the rewards are boring, and they often just get in the way. I'll be surprised if they survive in a similar form into Civ 6.

I think they are ok but I usually cut their number in half (12 on a huge map) as I found them impeding on my growth and the A.I growth as well.

But they are very exploitable. for example you can usually use city state as a training ground for my troops, and in a marathon lenght game this can be obscene advantage. You kill most of their troops, leave an archer in the city and let the city and the archer shoot at your troops while hammering them with ranged units and let them heal back, rince repeat. After awhile you have troops with over 300 xp

CS are good shield against other AI. I love when there is CS right next to me. AI tends to attack CS first before attacking me. :)
