Annoying Progress Stopping Bug

In my very first game, 56 slow turns in, I get this message when I try to end my turn,

"Error:NullReferenceException. Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

The game then just hangs on the same AI's turn, and the screen starts to fade to a light brown color. Trying to submit a bug report in game just gets its own failed to send error.

Anyone have an idea what this means or how to get passed it?

Ted is right about the problem. It is indeed an addressing error. But that doesn't help you move on with your game.

The only way around this kind of problem is to go back a save or two and do something different. Make a random change in your actions. Go a different way with a scout. Attack the AI with a different unit. Develop a different tile with a worker. Eventually you will stumble on something which does not provoke the bug. It shouldn't take long. Maybe a half hour of trying stuff.

If you submit a bug report to Mohawk Games then you might well help them identify the issue but you won't be able to continue with your game until they make a release which fixes it. I don't know how often they plan on making new releases but I can't believe it's more often than once a month.

As I write this, it occurs to me that there is another thing you might try. The developers released two versions of the game yesterday. You might try loading your game in the other one. I guessing that, like me, you are using the main branch. Perhaps the "test" version has a bug fix. Or maybe the logic has been changed enough so that the bug does not get provoked.

I seriously doubt this. But it might work. My main answer remains what I said earlier. Change your actions. I personally would abandon the game but I know that other people don't have the same attitude.

Good luck.

I know there is a bug related to holy cities and capture of them. IIUC it’s getting fixed in the next patch.

If this happens to you again, hang on to your save file and try loading it again the following week, with the latest version of the game. Bug fixes like this are being addressed with high priority and save files should be backwards compatible.

I've been having this and have found that just saving and reloading has been working for me consistently.
